the wintry weather could also be 'sleet' which could be 'steel' Enthused by this I checked out 'steel guitar engagement' but can't fit the rest.

Well Engagement could be a challenge

I was dreaming of a steel guitar engagement

"I thought you were dinner, but you were the shark"
doesn't fit in any respect that I can think of, but I feel like proposing it anyway:E

Olly, contemplating his next clue...

I suppose the something you select could be something you pick, I.e. a guitar.

"To my mind the (wintry) weather was confused ... something I select and, in a single word, announce a challenge."

So all we need is to work out some way in which "engagement" = announce a challenge? :E

Engagement in itself means a challenge...certainly in the military sense.

not claiming this as mine...

I was dreaming of steel guitar engagement....

In my mind ..I was dreaming of

Sleet ..steel

Something I select (pick) ..guitar

I think it all fits ...(engage)ment means battle ..engage, would be to announce commencement of battle (challenge)

Well in that case we're just waiting for Olly to verify.
I don't quite see "in a single word, announce a challenge" in engagement but I'm happy to be wrong :E

... ?

Yes, crumbling_mice has it.

This was interesting, as I'd inadvertently made it simpler than I'd intended: it hadn't occurred to me when coming up with the clue that 'engagement' meant battle.

That part of the clue was something else entirely, as you can see below:

To my mind the weather was confused, as I thought of something I select and, in a single word, announce a challenge.

'...I was dreaming of a steel guitar engagement...'

- 'Let It Bleed'

To my mind [I was dreaming] the wintry weather was confused [the letters in 'sleet' confused make 'steel'], as I thought of something I have selected [or picked, as in to pick or strum a guitar] and then, in a single word, announce a challenge [a 'gage' is something symbolising a challenge to fight: en – gage - ment].

.....

Olly.

.....sorry sssoul

I meant to say 'engage' can be used to announce a challenge. When fighters fight they engage with one another etc

Engage then becomes engagement

I'm not saying it's correct just saying it could all fit.

Yayy crumbling_mice! [throwing well-done confetti of victory all over]

Sorry about my doubts - sometimes I'm just too thick. Well done!

Nice job guys. I love that particular lyric and thought Olly's clue was a clever one. By no means too easy, we've just got some sharp folks on here and when they work collectively nothing's going to stay hidden to too long.

Also thanks Olly for the Clue and a timely response and not keeping us hanging on.

Thankyou kindly folks, Green lady should recieve a big thanks for working the guitar bit out as I didn't see that to be fair...a true bit of teamwork from us all.

If Olly hasn't got one lined up I made one up at work on friday which I'm happy to post. Otherwise back to you Olly ...oh and thanks for the fun!

Here goes...I think it will be solved quickly!

A cryptic clue to a line or phrase from a Stones song:

Sounds like two eyes initially together giving us balance - objectifying someone special

That's not as easy as it might seem, I'm sure!
And I'm sure we're all relieved to have our brains unburdened

Back to Crumbling Mice's ... "Sounds like two eyes initially together" isn't giving me much. :\

She saw me coming, she was a piece of work?

I think "she saw" sounds like "see saw", a teeter totter that works around an equilibrium (balance).

And "a piece of work" is about as objectifying as I can think of.

But that's about it. I can't make out where "me coming" is anywhere related to "initially together",
unless I risk a ban from this board for making obscene remarks.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

No correct answers yet...in keeping with Olly's approach i will add a further clue a day until Friday. Todays clue is it a lyric from an album released between 1969 and 1973.

two y's initially

'y'ing and 'y'ang compliment each other, giving balance

You're my thing .. my object
