I have spent a very enjoyable afternoon listening to beggars banquet, it's 2002 reissue cd. Street fighting man and stray cat blues are staggeringly brilliant, particularly noted sound quality on sfm.i listened to the acoustic guitar on the no expectations... A fitting point to remember Brian Jones last contribution.

Unseen Rolling Stones pictures from Beggars Banquet....
Date: September 26, 2008 10:48

A treat for anyone in London coming up in November........

Fans can feast on unseen Rolling Stones pictures

Photographs of The Rolling Stones that have been gathering dust for 40 years will form part of a new exhibition in London.

The pictures, many of which have never been seen in public, were taken by Michael Joseph in 1968 for the Beggars Banquet album.

The photo shoot took place over two days at Sarum Chase, a large house in West Hampstead.

It involved a cat, three dogs, a sheep and a goat as well as a one-legged white piano and lots of smoke. A spokesman for the exhibition at Blink gallery, Poland Street W1, said: "It was a legendary photo session and it is only now that these extraordinary photographs go on display.

"More than 75 per cent of the images have never been exhibited anywhere in the world. Some have only recently been rediscovered after lying unseen for over 40 years." The Beggars Banquet Collection also includes pictures of the band, in medieval costume, lying in a field full of cows in the grounds of the property, former home of Victorian society painter Frank Owen Salisbury.

Mr Joseph, who was well known at the time for his corporate photography, said the shoot was "wild and hugely memorable".

The show opens on 7 November and runs until 6 December.

My next visit, a week or so later threw finally things into sharp relief. I have in my possession a highly detailed map of the area dating from the early 1970s. It shows the boundary between properties. Studying this it became clear that the main culprit in the hill’s enclosure was the house Sarum Chase, that vast neo-Tudor pile at the top of Platt’s Lane. It was obvious when I thought about it. This architectural curiosity dominates the area and often excites controversy and
comment. Nicholas Pevsner described it as “pure Hollywood Elizabethan.” A friend of mine insists the banqueting hall is genuinely old. Years ago somebody told me Robert Stigwood, onetime manager of Eric Clapton and the Bee-Gees lived there. Later, the house was a music school or the headquarters of a cult. Or so I have been assured.

I made my mind up and paid a visit, intent on getting onto the hill. The property is currently uninhabited, signs on the grand oak door informing me that a security company patrol the grounds with guard dogs. I looked up the steep driveway at the garden wall with its ornate ironwork gate. The red light of a CCTV camera blinked from above one of the windows. It was all so clear now. There, behind the house was the row of Lombardy Poplars obviously marking the property’s edge.

I knocked on the door hoping nobody would answer. However, a young man opened the door looking as if he had stepped straight from a rigorous workout. Dressed in a sweaty tracksuit bottom and T-shirt, he exhibited a well-developed musculature, particularly in his strong sinuous arms. I asked him if I could come in and have a look around the back garden but he refused. However he kindly gave me a phone number to contact. He said he thought it unlikely I would get clearance to wander about the crest of the hill. I thanked him and left.

On Monday morning I received a telephone message from Paris saying the General would give me an hour at Sarum Chase in the afternoon after the Lord Mayor’s luncheon at the Mansion House…Before the arrival police were on duty at each entrance of Sarum Chase and, duly preceded by outrider police on motor-bikes and a Scotland Yard car, the distinguished visitor arrived.”

On one occasion at another of the cult's properties(Sarum Chase at Haampstead), I saw a man faint, half way through yet another of their tedious lectures and were were told by the group's leader Mr McLaren that the man was "wilful", in another words he was doing it deliberately....
No one went to help him, which I thought was appalling. The cult steadily got worse, we were told to eat only bread and cheese daily, there was talk of arranged marriages by Mr McLaren, contraception was banned- we were told that "women knew what days of the month were the fertile ones!". One of my friends was encouraged to marry a man aged nearly 50-she was only 20.At this point I became really worried.
Eventually I escaped

I grew up a few miles away from Sarum Chase in Belsize Park. It was and still is an immensely foreboding structure and one that would perfect befit a classic Hammer horror film. It lies facing a particularly ominous area of Hampstead Heath, part of which is probably known to George Michael and has been nicknamed Gobbler's Gulch.
Perhaps Mick and Keith got to Sarum Chase when they shared a flat in Holly Mount, Hampstead - about a 5 minute walk away.

Fantastic album (of course) that has become a mood listen rather than a go-to listen like LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS or TATTOO YOU.

So much happening in the album, with particular aspects of the previous album present, mainly Keith's guitar sound and Charlie's drumming, to where BB is the opening of the portal to The Rolling Stones proper.

Missing the obvious song, Street Fighting Man is enough for that bump. The brilliant open air of Jigsaw Puzzle - why never performed live is another one of those WTF songs for the Stones - and the absolute darkness of Stray Cat, which was perfected with Gimme Shelter...

A welcoming avenue to The Rolling Stones of which the arc of ended with GOATS HEAD SOUP.

Like the other three members of the 'Big Four', Beggars Banquet is a record that I very-much grew to love, after initially having reservations: ooh, there's only ten tracks?; some of these are a bit 'long', aren't they? However, as my ears matured, I soon enough developed a love and affection for it, which has forever continued. It's one of those albums that, guaranteed, I'll listen to in it's entirety at least once a year.

Edit: For me, Beggars Banquet it's the Stones' first 'mature release', with a more grown-up, serious effort applied to the song-writing.

The release of JJF in the spring of 1968 signaled an exciting time was at hand for Stones fans.I was all of 15 at the time. It was a rocking, uplifting, and completely original sounding single with a cool B side in Child Of The Moon and a wicked cover to boot. When Beggars Banquet hit the stores later in the year, we knew from the first needle drop this was a special album and a real departure from what had come previously. Apart from Prodigal Son all of the songs were Mick and Keith penned. I remember my friends all being blown away by BB. We had to wait to the US 1969 tour to hear some of these BB songs live, and work well they did. The album Beggars Banquet remains one of the creative highlights for the Stones and in retrospect signaled what was the beginning of a long string of very high quality recordings and successful tours. The album has certainly stood the test of time and still sounds fresh and alive. As it's been said before, "those were the days!"

When I first heard BB I was never completely sold on its greatness. Always loved SFM and No Expectations and of course SFTD is as impressive a song as this band or any other has ever made, but never really appreciated the whole production as the great unified piece of work that it is. That changed over time and I recognize the album for what it is….the musical foundation for the brilliance that was to come over the next four years. Here’s to the great Beggars Banquet!

An expanded BEGGARS is interesting as a playlist:

No Expectations
Dear Doctor
Parachute Woman
Jigsaw Puzzle
Street Fighting Man
Child Of The Moon
Prodigal Son
Stray Cat Blues
Factory Girl
Family
Salt Of The Earth

That's the odd one out, for me. It's more 'Satanic Majesty's', than Beggars Banquet.

Jumpin' Jack Flash, Street Fighting Man and Stray Cat Blues also have some of that «freakiness» sound-wise. It's one of the reasons why I love BB so much – a period of transition.

Many! ... but keep these coming!

I also assumed Child of the Moon was a Satanic leftover (as someone posted above), but I guess not!

Glad you're enjoying them my friend!!

Child of the Moon I believe was started during the late sessions for Satanic but was definitely re-recorded for Beggars.

Blood Red Wine & Still A Fool were recorded during Beggars but are unreleased. I'm only listing released songs from the sessions and no early versions. For example, I won't be listing the early Version of Loving Cup from the Exile Reissue for the Let It Bleed sessions.
