So the 2002 release is the best one to get? I want to replace some of my Stones CD's this year, and BB is on the top of the list.

And, are we really trying to rank the songs on this album????...if all that was on there was Parachute Woman, it would be enough, and I can't even articulate why, just the SOUND of it. SUCH an incredible album, from start to finish.

Fair point. For me Jigsaw Puzzle is a 7 but the album is still a 10. There's really no point in ranking the songs on Exile either. LIB is actually weak by comparison because it makes perfect sense to rank the songs...if that makes any sense.

Well so does my hairbrush, but it's not as good as the one my hairdresser uses. grinning smiley

What I mean, is that I want a better version of some of the CD's.

Charlie's got to pay for all those horses somehow.... Maybe he will name one of them Latebloomer in honor of Latebloomer.

LIB is not weak imo but actually stronger if you look at individual numbers. But, yes, Beggars is a ten as an album - of course. There are no bad songs on it but I see Salt of the earth as a part of the album, a finishing touch - not a strong song but a nice performance. If one compares to Let it bleed, YCAGWYW is a strong number on a strong album. I consider Let it bleed to be their best album. Followed by Exile. Not Beggars, despite PW, NE, SFM.

Yes, that was understood, but my point is that the songs are still the songs, do you really they will sound better by buying another cd?

As long as he doesn't say it to the tail end of the horse, Turner, I'm perfectly fine with that.

My "atomistique" song-for-song evaluation from one moment in time.

Sympathy for the Devil 10**
No Expectations 10***
Dear Doctor 9
Parachute Woman 9,75
Jigsaw Puzzle 10
Street Fighting Man 10*
Prodigal Son 9
Stray Cat Blues 10*
Factory Girl 9,75
Salt of the Earth 10**

Nothing stated by me for the album as a whole. However, for a couple of decades BECGARS BANQUET actually was my highest evaluated album. Now for the last decades, happily, by me set forth as only one of approximately 12 highest and great Stones albums, not ranking among them.

[It has been and is liberating for me to get away from ranking between albums that at the same time are both wholes and consisting of individual songs. That process started with me quite many years ago, when I noticed that I often was gaining more satisfaction from albums and songs that were not according to my then reached hierachies of Stones output. At first puzzled, it even became and is a special joy and refreshing to have it that way. Then I may now freely evaluate individual songs within an album and across albums as long as I am free from ranking between albums.]

Added much later: Here for instance 1o** is to be read 10 plus 2 stars.

Sorry, still not following ... does it not sound just about perfect already? If anything, I'd recommend going vinyl over another cd.

Stunning album. Gee they were GREAT in this particular era, weren't they? Just the growth from Aftermath through Goats Head Soup... Not only in songs, but in playing AND production. Stupendous.

This album should not be compared to any other Stones' work. It is unique and with great subtleness. Yes, several songs of this album are or have been played with electric vibrancy, which are also outstanding. However, the album is more laid back and hits the comfort zone. Hard to describe -

Additionally, I really like the song order as one other poster stated, this album is a "masterpiece."

Over the last couple of years, Beggars Banquet has become my favorite Stones album.

It took awhile for Dear Doctor, Jigsaw Puzzle, Factory Girl and SOTE to “click” for me for some reason. As my musical taste has grown over the last few years, I’ve come to really love those songs.

Get the 2002 remaster. It sounds INCREDIBLE. Which means, a gazillion times better than the 1986 issue.

Come on, Salt of the earth is my favourite Stones song! Always has been for 40 years now.

Beggars Banquet is a classic in teh entire album department athough a song like Dear doctor surely is no classic (in fact, it only works on the context).

I cannot imagine that Jigsaw puzzle would work in concert, and it is probably therefore they never performed it.

Is there a date for the photo shoot, as the article states :
1. Brian had got busted the night before, but they didn't find anything.
2. The photographer had recently been to a Stones concert...in Newcastle.

Maybe I have misread...I assume the shoot was sometime in 1968.
