Goat's Head Soup VS It's Only Rock and Roll - track by track

Dancing with Mr. D vs If You Can't Rock Me
If You Can't Rock Me - although I love Dancing With Mr D.

100 Years Ago vs Ain't Too Proud To Beg
100 Years Ago. Duhhhh.

Coming Down Again vs IORR
Again. Duh. Coming Down Again. Duhhhhhhh.

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo vs Til The Next Time
Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo...

Angie vs. Time Waits For No One
How is this one even debatable? Time Waits For No One! OF COURSE!

Silver Train vs Luxury
Silver Train. Luxury sucks.

Hide Your Love vs Dance Little Sister
Hmmmm. I guess... Dance Little Sister.

Winter vs If You Really Want To Be My Friend
Two fantastic tracks. Gonna have to side with Winter on this one.

Can You Hear The Music vs Short & Curlies
Can You Hear The Music is brilliant regardless of what it's held up against.

Star Star vs Fingerprint File
As much as I love the Chuck Berry ripping of Star Star, Fingerprint File is exceptional.

What is that - 6-4 GHS? All I know is GHS wins.

If you're doing an album comparison, I don't understand the logic of basing it on comparing each track to the other albums's track of the same number. Unless its just for the sake of playing a fun little game. Then , that's fine. But What if you thought 100 years ago wasn't as good as ATPTB but better than Till the next Goodbye? Under this system, it wouldn't get any points. Its not really a measure of which album is better.

If you compare them song by song it's a tie. But the album I prefer is GHS in the end.

Resist listening to your heart...just use my math.

These were the first two Stones albums I ever bought when they originally came out. So to be they're both great and both classics. But I still have a soft spot for Goat's Head Soup, which I think is an underrated classic. I think it has a great "mood" that carries through, sort of like Exile has it's own mood - groove. Personally I hold GHS up there with SF and Exile. IORR also great but not quite as much. Though Time Waits For No One is sheer perfection and one of the greatest all time tracks by anyone. For me, Top 5 of any Stones tune. And if classic rock radio had any taste, they would've been playing Time Waits For No One, Winter, Heartbreaker, Angie (OK was a #1, but don't hear it often anymore), Fingerprint File in steady rotation for all these years

But I could argue the same thing about the centrepiece of IORR, Time Waits For No One.

If they were both released today, GHS would be see significantly more success. That's due to having far more light and shade. IORR is bland by comparison.

I'm afraid it was me that used the apples-and-oranges cliche (re IORR and CDA). No point in complaining about the methodology here: it's just for fun.

So what are we doing to the loser of this Death Match? Are all copies going to be committed to a ceremonial bonfire, like Beatles records after John Lennon's bigger-than-Jesus comment?

-------------

Song-by-song comparison--v. clever and fun, but too arbitrary for me to play--I just can't pit Angie vs. Time Waits for No One | or IORR vs. Coming Down Again.

So, as a whole, gauging which collection has more songs among my top all-time favorites, the winner is "It's Only Rock n Roll" (with 4) over GHS (with 3), but I have more of a fondness for "Goat's Head Soup," because it's emotionally a warmer album.

Two great albums , i'd include them in as a trilogy with Black & BLue
The same goes to SG + ER + UC

Two great and underrated trilogys

Goat's Head Soup VS It's Only Rock and Roll - track by track

Dancing with Mr. D vs If You Can't Rock Me
If You Can't Rock Me by a mile

100 Years Ago vs Ain't Too Proud To Beg
That's a hard one. A tie.

Coming Down Again vs IORR
No contest, although I love IORR. Coming Down Again.

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo vs Til The Next Time
Till The Next Goodbye is filler. Heartbreaker.

Angie vs. Time Waits For No One
How is this one even debatable? Angie is a classic. TWFNO starts out nicely, but the lyrics, the mannerism, the scale practising. No, Angie wins on a knock-out.

Silver Train vs Luxury
Silver Train sucks, Luxury rocks.

Hide Your Love vs Dance Little Sister
Two clunkers. A tie.

Winter vs If You Really Want To Be My Friend
The brilliant soul ballad is preferred to a rather anonymous ballad.

Can You Hear The Music vs Short & Curlies
Can You Hear The Music is one of the best tracks on GHS, and would have improved IORR. No contest.

Star Star vs Fingerprint File
Love both, but Fingerprint File has that mysterious, funky vibe to it. I'll go for the latter.

So, it's a tie: 5 – 5

Dancing with Mr. D vs. If You Can't Rock Me
Neither is very good, but since at least IYCRM later has its moments live (on Love You Live) it gets more points.

100 Years Ago vs. Ain't too Proud To Beg
The wah-wah climax is kind of cool. The rest not so much.

Coming Down Again vs. IORR ,
I don't like CDA. At least IORR is moderately okay.

Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo vs. Til The Next Time
There is some excitement in it.

Angie vs. Time Waits For No One,
Of course, we have all heard Angie way too much, but it's really a good song.

Silver Train vs. Luxury
Silver Train is pure filler. Lixury is ... well ... different.

Hide Your Love vs. Dance Little Sister
Can't choose. Don't like either of them

Winter vs. If You Really Want To Be My Friend
I love Winter. Even when it's basically a repetition of Moonlight Mile, I sometimes think it's even better.

Can You Hear The Music vs. Short & Curlies
Touch call. Never listen to either.

Star Star vs. Fingerprint File
Both are okay, but Star Star is more fun.

Final score: 6 to 3 for GHS

GHS is probably better as an album due to production and sound and Winter, HYL, SF, and A. But IORR is my choice no contest. IORR, IYCRM, FF, TWFN, DLS etc.
