"Best" JJF ever?

This is an odd post, because of course Jumping Jack Flash is on the short list of best Stones songs ever, but since they've played it at virtually every concert since its release, picking your favorite rendition is like picking your favorite Kraft macaroni and cheese dinner. The first one was probably great, the most recent filled a need, and the dozen or thousand in between all kind of run together.

My second-favorite is the rendition on the 1969 tour, when the song and audience for it were still fresh, and the band was still exploring it a bit.

But, oddly perhaps, my favorite that I just rediscovered was the 1978 Buffalo version, which many here have in some format, although I can't find a version online right now.

It's a rough audience recording, but the "weaving" between Keith and Ron is maniacally frenzied, yet disciplined and tight, the whole time, and I'm always amazed at it each time I listen to it.

Other worthy versions? Especially if there's an online link?

Fort Worth is excellent.

But the studio version tops everything. Hands down.

Circus Krone 2003

This song doesn't work played like the studio version in concert. Just listen to all those crappy cover bands who try to play JJF like the studio version. It doesn't work.

When I was younger I always found this FF-version pretty massive. The video is messed up though, they didn't put it on YT officially.
In contrast I loved the "active mix" of the 2014 versions when they pushed Keith way up front after the choruses. That didn't happen in 06/07.
Second best after the studio version is R'n'R Circus for me.

Its one of the songs for the most part that the Stones can't play well live. Right along with Brown Sugar, Street Fighting Man, and Rocks Off. IF you can't play it as well as the record then I think you can't play it well live.

1969 was OK but the concert for Sandy was the best I have seen live. They actually set their feet and played, probably because they only did a two set and there was a lot of competition. Love 3:45 when those 3 women are laughing really hard at Mick's goofball act..

Basically, they all sound the same to me. And quite frankly, the song is played so often it's becoming a bit predictable. To put it mildly...

One of the greatest songs ever created and the
first song Jimmy Miller produced for the Rolling Stones...
the first of many many great songs Jimmy produced for them.

This song is special and deserves to be played at every show, it is that great.

I cant wait to hear the opening notes of JJF again live in concert in person.

IMHO, the last time the Stones played Jumpin' Jack Flash with any bite or balls has been since the Steel Wheels tour.

Toronto 89 because they play the full beginning of the song like the record. Also love the Circus version

I can't wait to listen to all of these. Thanks.

By the way, I think the song is in the smallest uppermost stratum of all they've done. And betting if I heard ANY version for the first time, I'd think so. It is deservedly played at ever concert.

But some renditions are more "throwaway" than others.

Studio version….very loud...it's loud enough when you can hear
faint screams from the front porch--"Police, open the door now"

"Welcome to the breakfast show" works for me. For my taste the '69 performances show the band at its sexiest. The performances were confident, effortless and almost restrained. The SAL version found the band working way too hard for opening song excitement. Despite the effort or perhaps because of the effort the performance feels flat and way too long. The performance feels ponderous.

So it is ununanimously unanimous that most versions of this kick ass song kick ass

All the early ones, but if it is a late era one then it has got to be the opener. As a closer in the 2000's its a mess.

For me it's
1. Ladies and Gentlemen 1972 version
2. Hyde Park 2013 version
3. Studio
4. Ya-Ya's version

Always been a great fan of the studioversion.
Actually not so much of the liveversions. It's like two different songs.

But I love the brussels 73 version. The guitars and - very important - the organ played by Billy Preston. It gives thesong the psychadelic touch from the studiorecording.
