Rarest Officially Released Stones Track?
Posted by: stonesstein ()
Date: February 1, 2015 17:28

Perhaps there is a thread on this topic, but I cannot find it. I am curious as to what might be considered the "rarest" officially-released Stones' track?

It could be a "variation" like the longer version of Slave on some reissued CDs, C---sucker Blues white-label single with the West German box set of the 80s, or even the version of Tell Me Baby How Many More times from the same box set.

On the other hand, it could be the unique "first-pressing" mix of Street Fighting Man from the promos and initial US release.

Would it be something released only in one specific format never to be seen again like Beast of Burden from the Some Girls US 8-track or Pretty Beat Up from the Undercover cassette?

There are some incredibly rare test pressing versions such as the Rocks Off/All Down the Line and Happy/Shine a Light Mono 45s, but those were not really "released" or available to the general public. Where does one draw the line?

All of this is to beg the question - what do you think?

Cheers to all!

To me:

The long Tell Me I (on the first pressings of 1st album UK)
and
Brown Sugar/Wild Horses (on the misprints of the US Hot Rocks).

Recorded live at Death Valley Stadium, Clemson, South Carolina on November 26, 1989 and has never been released officially anywhere else.

Brilliant! Perhaps it is "mispressings" that are the rarest. How many of these "mispressings" or mistakenly-released tracks are out there?

It´s also available on a 7" for the "foof benefit", backed
by a great version of Tom Jones and New Model Army.

That "Gimme Shelter" single reached #23 on the UK Singles chart on April 1993.

Got that one! There are a few others in that style as well, I'll have to look at my collection to see which ones they are.

I think the rarest officially pressed, but pulled from release has to be their second single, Poison Ivy/Fortune Teller.

If that one doesn't fit within the criteria, then the I Wanna Be Your Man/Stoned US promo single.

I don't imagine that the cassette accounted for many of the sales!
It was released as part of the "Putting Our House In Order" charity project which aimed to raise money for various homeless charities. To comply with chart regulations this was released in four different formats, 2 CD singles (Rock and Indie), a 12" single (Dance) and a cassette single (Pop) featuring twelve different artists performing the Stones classic. The interview track was common to all formats to further comply with chart rules.
The 7" vinyl was a juke-box only copy hence the unpainted injection moulded label.

Well, I'll put my hand up as someone who bought it in all formats the day it came out. Strangely, and much to my surprise, just about all of the interpretations of the song are good, and a couple are excellent. I burnt them all onto one CD a few years back, and it's definitely a good listen.

Oddly I'm doing some "reorganising" at the moment, and two copies of the cassette are in front of me while I try to find a smart place to store them safely.

Rare in terms of spelling mistake could be the first couple hundred copies of the single I Wanna Be Your Man/ Stoned - misspelled Stones.

Some rare "tracks" officially released but never compiled or reissued :
- Under My Thumb (live from New Castle, October 1965) - released on the first CD edition of Got Live If You Want It!
- full length version of The Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man (released on the first edition of Singles Collection in 1989)
- Sway - alternate version (released on a 7" single, the version on the Singles box set is actually an edited version of the album version...)
- Dance - instrumental version (released on a promo 12" single)
- Before They Make Me Run - Bob Clearmountain mix
- extended versions of Miss You and Beast of Burden (8-track)
- Too Much Blood - dance version
- Winning Ugly remixes
- Rock and a Hard Place - Rock Mix
- Almost hear You Sigh - promo remix
- Highwire - full length version (with count in) - released only on a 4-track single
- Gimme Shelter (live version) from a 1993 single
- Tumbling Dice (live) and Street Fighting Man (live) - released as b-sides to JJF 1991 single
- Out of control (Don Was live remix)
- Under The Radar & Don't Wanna Go Home (released on a bonus DVD only)
- Biggest Mistake - instrumental version
- Plundered My Soul - radio mix (can be found as download though)

It's still the @#$%& record that's rare in this case...I haven't got the single 7' 'It's only rock'n'roll' with the very rare 'Through the lonely nights' on flip-side...

It was officially released anyhow. They didn't have the best/complete master for I Think I'm Going Mad either (the intro). It was released, and it is rare.

We all know the story here.
But it wasn't issued from a master at all, but copied from a boot...
So, if it is official on the paper, it is not really on material source terms (imho).
They even didn't give a matrix number to the SP.

Re: Rarest Officially Released Stones Track?

It was an anonymous immersion to an official release (with a matrix number). Then it has to be regarded as officially release, albeit for a limited period of time, imo.

Ronnie Wood has released two live albums with bootlegs as the source: Kilburn and the The New Barbarians Largo-show. Aren't those shows released officially?

You play on words, you understand very well what I am talking about.
Since this kind of official stuff clones the unofficial one and brings nothing new (in terms of material or sound quality) this has no other purpose than cluttering the shelves (unless being an insatiable consumerist).

I would call it an official release from an un-official source. Therefore you are both right. The mystery is does the original recording exist and will it be released.

It would be rather ironic if someone would mention a track from the Stones ' Rarities 1971-2003 ', because when such an album is released, it is hardly rare anymoresmiling smiley

It must be from some 12' single with a 'dance mix 11' or something...

The problem is that we are so stupid that we buy those releases. So what could have remained obscurity becomes.... (fill inn) grinning smiley

Some sampler CDs sent to the radios offer some rare tracks, like the Biggest Bang sampler CD.
There are some "download only" avalailable tracks like "It's All Over Now" live from the Paradiso.
