Sorry to be a "party killer", but let's face the facts... The Rolling Stones don't normally announce shows or tours until 4-6 weeks before they will happen.
The shows of the USA & Canada tour in 2013 were announced on April 3, 2013. The rehearsals started less than two weeks later, and the tour started exactly 30 days later on May 3, with the Echoplex show one week before that. Same with the 2012 shows. They were announced Oct 15, 2012, and peformed just a few weeks later Nov/Dec 2012. Same with most other shows the Stones are doing these days. European tour dates god confirmed in March and on, two months ahead of the tour, a bit early, because there were festivals involved, with the need for an early announcement.

I really suck at gambling. Plane ticket purchased, room reserved, rock weekend ticket bought, car rented....NO STONES! I thought I'd get in early while the rates for plane, room, and car were reasonable. Now I wish that money was used for Jazz Fest. For my taste the Jazz Fest line up blows away "Crock In Rio". VP of RIR Roberta Medina refers to festival as the "world cup of festivals".....she can't be serious.

Unless there is something with the casinos, guaranteeing ticket purchases, I think the "rock weekend" could create difficulties for the promoters. The headliners, particularly No Doubt, are pretty weak for a festival of this magnitude (I think they are actually second line at the NO Jazz Fest). The Pop weekend is quite strong, but I suspect that ticket sales for the Rock weekend will be far from robust. We'll see.

I have pre-paid a hotel room at the Hotel Pennsylvania across the street from MSG for the next five years. Sooner or later the Stones MIGHT show up for a new years day show, I would not miss it, and that hotel is just "lovely" you know. Just check out Tripadvisor and you will understand. For those who are about to do the same, please think twice though... In fact, don't ever pre-pay anything when it comes to the Stones - at least not flights and hotels.

I pre-paid for a flight, bought the insurance for $30 and booked a (cancelable) hotel. If the Stones would have been announced yesterday,I would have been all set. As it stands, I am debating a weekend getaway to Vegas on that week-end sans festival or losing thirty dollars. Not always the worst idea to pre-pay and make plans IMHO.
When this thread started.. the originator seemed to be a lot more confident of the prospect of the Stones appearance at the festival than he does now, hence a few of us making the "gamble", and un-beknownst to some of us has felt less optimistic for a while apparently.

LOL. The reviews for that place are hilarious. One was something like, if you get a choice to stay here or sleep in the gutter, choose the gutter, it's much nicer. A buddy of mine stayed there when The Who did three shows at MSG. I stayed with him for one night and the place was like a flop house from a 1970's detective show.

Just my two cents, and nothing to do with the question wether the Stones will participate or not in this year's line-up:
I think it sounds rather silly to name an event "Rock in Rio" when it takes place in Lisbon, or Vegas, or anywhere but Rio for that matter.
There; I said it.
When I say NA then I mean North America. Las Vegas is in North America. In fact they might even play in Rock In Rio in Rio de Janeiro later this year, the ORIGINAL "Rock In Rio", but that is a completely different case. All I know is they are working on dates in NORTH and SOUTH America. That is why I personally call it a tour of the Americas.
ROCK IN RIO is a great brand with a mission. If you read the ROCK IN RIO web site then you will see that it is a lot more than just a festival:
Rio de Janeiro 2001:
Rock in Rio "For a Better World" was born. 3,200 young people in Rio de Janeiro graduated in elementary education with the financial support of Rock in Rio 28 educational projects from UNESCO were financed
Lisbon 2004:
Built a primary School in Tanzania, where 400 children attend this school per year Built a health care center in Gapara – Itaqui Bacanga – São Luís – Maranhão – Brazil, which services about 50,000 patients each year.
... and so on ...
I would love to see them in Rio - at "Rock in Rio" - home ground Rio, but may be it happens to early, as they have been looking at Oct/Nov rather than Sept.

I booked a room and airfare, etc, WAAYYYY in advance to see the Stones at Aloha Stadium on the Bigger Bang Tour - all at nice discounts given the fact that it was Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The Stones cancelled the shows. I was looking at huge cancellation penalties, so we went to Hawaii and spent four days just sitting around watching the kids play in the ocean - but it was awesome. Hawaii is one of those special places - you can do absolutely nothing, and feel like you've had the best vacation of your life.

There are far worse things in life than to be stuck in Waikiki for 4 days!

I would advice anyone to use bookings with cancellation options. When the Stones cancelled in Perth in March last year I lost nothing, except for some shows. All hotels and flights are booked with cancellation options before they happen. Same with Hanging Rock. I was about to hire a car but luckily the cancellation came just in time. I think may be I have had 40 or so Stones shows cancelled, changed or added since 1990. Cardiff, Wembley, Montreal, Atlantic City, Bilbao, Milano, Benidorm, 7 shows down under, two shows added in BA 1998 when I was there, Australia and NZ added to the 2006 tour while on travel and so on and on. It cost a little bit extra but it makes life so more relaxed. If they add another show, like Brookyn 2012, well then you just change flights and hotels.

We stayed there when we went to see the Stones at MSG and then Giants stadium a few years ago !!!!.....massive room with fantastic NY views and....bloody cheap for the location. You get what you pay for, but at the end of the day how much time do you actually spend in your Hotel room apart from sleeping !
It is a disgusting hotel

...Yup; great local beers over there.

Good advice, but just an additional note, there's usually a penalty for changing flights.
