Stones videos on MTV....
Posted by: Local27 ()

Just wondering if any of you Stones fans remember their videos when MTV actually used to show videos. The time period I'm talking about is from '81-'84. The Stones videos I remember are:

Paint it Black
She's So Cold
Emotional Rescue
Start Me Up
Hang Fire
Neighbors
Waiting On A Friend
Going To A Go-Go
Undercover
She Was Hot
Too Much Blood

I almost want to say they had one for "Time is on my side"...but I could be wrong.

Are there any other videos played on MTV that I'm missing?

They got a lot of airplay around Voodoo Lounge + flashpoint

I'm thinking:

Highwire
Sexdrive (I've still never seen that video)
Love is Strong (this was very popular at the time)
You Got Me Rocking
Sparks Will Fly
Out of Tears

+ any other that I forgot.

I liked the Saint of Me video - Mick seemed to be doing a piss-take of himself, with that black eyeshadow he looked cool.

I recall a video for Time is on My Side. It was a concert clip from Hampton 81 I believe?
What was the video for Paint It Black like? I've never seen any for it.

I remember It's only rock n roll when they're playing in the tent with all the bubbles. Do y'all remember that one? vh1 classic shows some good Stones clips once in a while.

to DGA35

I think you're right on the Time is on my side video. I remember it being live footage from a show....and like you said....most likely Hampton '81.

The Paint it Black video was not good at all! The video centered on an obese, deranged looking psyco and a little boy that befriended him. It was like the boy was introducing this freak to all these things he's never done before.....like going to an an amusement park and riding a roller coaster. There was absolutely no fottage of the Stones in this video. It was just the back ground music for a weird video concept. I remember it clear as day. But again, a horrible video for a decent song.

When was the video to Paint It Black made?

Was there EVER a video of Paint It Black?

I remember seeing

Anybody Seen My baby
It's Only Rock n Roll
Love Is Strong
Jumpin Jack Flash - their BEST video
Undercover
Too Much Blood
Saint Of Me
Out Of Tears

If you can still get it Video Rewind is a good compilation of their videos.

Don't forget "I Go Wild". Good video (with some wild dogs!), but much more great song.

Again.....there was definitely a video for Paint it Black that was in heavy rotation on MTV circa 1982. But like I stated earlier in the thread, it was just the music being played....there was no Stones footage whatsoever. I don't know if it's good or bad, but I grew up eating and sleeping MTV from 1981-84. I'm gonna do a searh for this Paint it Black video....if I find it.....I'll post it in the forum. It exists somewhere.

I've never caught the Paint It Black vid but it sounds similair to what was put together for the Like A Rolling Stone video. The footage showed a group of people all freaking and dancing at a party. It's been a fair while but if my memory serves me well there were no Stones at all in the footage. Possibly glued together by MTV...

In 1989 I remember it was a "Stones-Weekend" on MTV. I had 20 buddies visiting, starting 11.00 AM with booze and Stones-videos. That was when I first saw videos like Far Away Eyes, Hey Negrita, Fool To Cry, Hang Fire, Silver Train etc.

It was one of the better days I can recall smiling smiley

I remember the Saint of Me video but everytime I saw it it was with these stupid pop up bubbles. Anyone remember those? Those damn bubles that were always opening up with lines like "Do you know that Keith likes to shave with soap in the mornings?..." or "Bill wears a size 12..."

Re: Stones videos on MTV....

Yeah, those bubbles were part of a program called "Pop-Up Video".

I never knew there were videos for "Hang Fire" or "Sparks Will Fly". What were those ones like?

I wish the Stones would release a DVD containing all of their videos in one solid, spiffy collection. I'd scoop that up in a micro-second! Is there any specific website that one could download all or most of these from? (somehow I doubt that there is).....

Also, here are some more promotional videos:

Almost Hear You Sigh
Rock & A Hard Place
Miss You
Brown Sugar
Dancing With Mr. D
Till The Next Goodbye
Hot Stuff
Angie (2 versions exist)
Harlem Shuffle
One Hit To The Body
Mixed Emotions
Worried About You

The Like A Rolling Stone-video was an expensive production (starring Patricia Arquette) with some (then) groundbreaking film technology.

Wow! Well then I better forget about becoming a film critic.

Just recall seeing it late one night on something like MTV or Rage but was disappointed there were no Stones in video. Dont recall seeing Arquette.

The Stones were in the van. Arquette was the character that Jagger sings about smiling smiley

The Like A ROlling Stone video also had footage of the Stones playing on a small stage to maybe 50 or so fans.

there wasnt a video for Sparks will fly

Since '73 there have been promo videos for the following :

GHS - Angie (2 versions), Silver train, Dancin with Mr d
IORR - IORR, Aint too proud to beg, til the next goodbye
Black and Blue - Hot stuff, negrita, Crazy mama, fool to cry
Some Girls - miss you, respectable, far away eyes
ER - Emotional rescue (2 versions), Where the boys Go, Shes so cold
TY - Start me up, WOAF, Hang fire, worried about you, neighbours
Still Life - Go Go (2 versions), time is on my side
Undercover - Undercover, She was hot, too much blood (uniquely all 3 videos were banned at one stage or another. When the title track was banned in the UK, they put together a different edit showing more of the 'performence' footage and showed that on Top of the Pops)
DW - harlem shuffle, One Hit
SW - Mixed emotions, hard place, AHYS, Sad sad sad, terrifying
flashpoint - High wire, Ruby Tuesday, Sex drive (2 versions)
VL - love is strong, YGMR, Out of tears, I Go wild
Stripped - LARS, wild horses
BTB - Anybody seen my baby (2 versions), saint of me, out of control
No Security - Gimme shelter (the worst video I've ever seen)
40 licks - dont stop (a close contender for the worst video I've ever seen)

MTv have showed live clips such as "Satisfaction" or "brown sugar from Hampton 81 but they werent promo clips per se.

Clips such as "sympathy for the devil" taken from official DVD releases like Rock n roll circus arent really promo videos. neither are the often shown clips of BBC performances of songs like Brown sugar (TOTP), Gimme shelter (pop go the 60's), etc

i have three different promo videos for JJF and four for 'have you seen your mother baby'.

Others from the 60s that I've seen are : lady jane, we love you (2 versions), 2000 light years from home, child of the moon, little queenie

filmed at Bagley's warehouse in london in september 1995. The band also played a few 'classics' live that night in between takes for the extras

the technology used for that video was indeed ground breaking - I think its called 'morphing'

Robbie Williams did a video for 'old before i die' in a similar style a few years later

I think it was one year later to be precise and what a cool video and song it is too!

Like a Rolling Stone even had Jay Kay from Jamiroquai in it.

The Miss You version from Toronto Rocks received some attention on dutch television. Espially on The Box...

The Like A Rolling Stone video still gets played on UK TV occasionally. I think I saw it on The Hits a few weeks ago. The station, which is usually reserved for the youngsters.

Actually, I think Like A Rolling Stone did quite well in the UK charts. I think it peaked at number 12. That's not too bad these days for a Stones single.

Where is Jay Kay in the LARS vid?

What about the Flip The Switch video?
It reached #1 in MTV Argentina in March 1998 and the video is on Rollingstones.com archive.
