It's Simple...these 4 in any order:

Let It Bleed
Sticky
Exile
Some Girls

By the way...the best engineered Stones album by farconsidering when and
where it was made is BLACK AND BLUE...hands down.

The worst is a toss up between these three:

Goats Head Soup: Made in a sub-par studio in Jamaica and instruments are completely out of tune.

Emotional Rescue: No depth...no bottom...sounds like someone smacking a tight napkin...crazy bad considering some of the tracks were from the Some Girls sessions which sounded amazing

Dirty Work: A complete lost producer and engineer...horrible engineering and mixing.

PECMAN

Do you find the instruments on GHS more out of tune than that of Exile?

Sub-par studio? Out of tune? Wrong on both.

After some thought:
1) Sticky Fingers
2) Exile
3) Voodoo
4) Some Girls

Yes - I love Voodoo.

So, who is going to compile these statistics then? Dandelion?

The Rolling Stones Now! (My all time face Stones lp. Played it when down, up, happy, sad, stoned and partying. Turned many people onto this album.)

Beggar's Banquet (A guitar player's album.)

Let It Bleed (Rock'n'roll. What more can be said?)

Exile On Main Street (Is there anything else? I still have my vinyl of this. It may be in glorious mono. I will havwe to go check.)

Runners-up:

Aftermath (Classic Stones.)

Sticky Fingers

Tattoo You (Second side)

Stripped (The Stones do acoustic music. You wish they would do an entire tour this way, playing small venues and acoustic shows. We'd pay primo for seeing and listening to them playing this way.)

Not wrong on both...I've read many interviews about this album with quotes from
Keith, Bill & Jagger who complain that they could never get everything in tune
because on a lot of the songs the guitars were laid down with the keyboards which were out of tune with each other and they laid down Bill's bass afterwards as he was a late arrival...as Bill said...if he tuned his bass to the guitars then he was out with the keyboards/piano...and if he tuned to the keyboard/piano...then he was out with the guitars.

Believe what you want...but if you are a musician...you can clearly hear it sounds warped.

But is it worse than Exile, which imo have more obvious out of tune guitars? All Down The Line for starters.

Nothing wrong with out of tune guitars, if they do sound good...winking smiley

But as far as GOATS HEAD SOUP go, I also think there is something odd tunefully going on, even though I don't think it is just a question of badly tuned guitar or something. I recall reading that they had some actual technical problems with the tapes they made in Jamaica (due to the heat or something)´and they need to do a lot of fixing later (in London?) to make the tracks sound alright and fit sonically and tunefully together. I take "Heartbreaker" being a clear example of the issue here. I cannot exactly point out what is the problem there, but something odd is going on, which doesn't sound alright...

Emotional Rescue is a good album, at one gym I go to, they have satellite music piped in, "Dance I" was on the other day and sounded so good.

This is a difficult question ... there are far more than five essential albums, but in the moment in my opinion, if it is restricted to five:

Exile on Main Street

Out Of Our Heads (UK Edition)

Sticky Fingers

Beggars Banquet

It's Only Rock'n Roll

Eh, maybe it's not the ones I picked.

Tattoo You
Goats Head Soup
Emotional Rescue
Undercover

Sorry, if it is restricted fo FOUR. Can't read anymore. Thus the task is even more difficult, but ...

Exile on Main Street

Out Of Our Heads (UK Edition)

Sticky Fingers

Beggars Banquet

this thread really suprised me-i thought for sure it would be 10 pages of

1.exile
2.let it bleed
3.beggars
4.sticky

it just shows how great of a band they really are-some of the fans even added the modern live era records like voodoo and bridges.

i dont care who it is ,dylan ,lennon and mccartney or anyone else, there is no one on this planet who have written more great songs than mick and keith-its not even close really if you add it up.

there is even greatness on bigger bang, which is an average record at best.the blues song, back of my hand would've worked on any of the great albums and laugh,i nearly died is a hidden classic.

Good post. I think I agree very much on assessment of GHS, ER and DW. I see them that way too. Doesn't reflect on quality of songs, just the technical side. And B&B is very well done.

I love the sound on ER. It's a beefed up and more balanced SG-sound with less trebly drums.

in no particular order.

1.beggars banquet.
2.exile on main street.
3.let it bleed.
4.tattoo you.

and the next 6 to make up the top 10 would be.

1.sticky fingers.
2.some girls.
3.goats head soup.
4.out of our heads.
5.between the buttons.
6.aftermath.

then after that

1.its only rock and roll.
2.rolling stones.
3.satanic majesties.
4.undercover.
5.a bigger bang.
6.voodoo lounge.
7.steel wheels.

then the bottom 5 as posted on another thread.

For five years, from 1968 to 1972, the Stones were firing on all cylinders. What came before and after was good and at times great, but those years represent the best any rock band has ever been. So, it might be the least interesting, most obvious choices, but:

Exile on Main Street
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Beggars Banquet

Supplemented by:

JJF, Honky Tonk Women, Let It Rock and Memo from Turner (singles)
Ya-Ya's and Brussels Affair (live albums)
Gimme Shelter and Ladies and Gentlemen (video)

Just typing this, it's hard to believe how great they were at that time.

and then you have the 'throwaway tracks' of Summer Romance, Let Me Go, Send It To Me and Where The Boys Go.

But damnit, these are great throwaways...love them and Mick's accents.

I can understand the often listed as 'most hated stones track', Indian Girl, but I don't even have a problem with that. It's like a welcome break from the dance party.

I love Emotional Rescue. In my opinion it is in the second trilogy of great albums by The Rolling Stones. The first trilogy being, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile; the second trilogy being Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and Tatoo You.

Being in my late 20's, and all of my friends being in their 20's also in 1980, I knew of no one that did not like Emotional Rescue in the day, at the time of it's release. Everybody I knew loved it who was Stones fan in those days.
