Canned Heat was outstanding, and John Mayall worked with them too. Not only "On the road again" but "Shake and Boogie", classic.
And just heard "Running with the Shadows", good stuff.
-----------
For my 5, I'd go something like:
Doors
Grateful Dead
Creedence
Allmans
5th, I'd go for the Beach Boys for popularity though, yes, I might like Aerosmith, Ramones more.
MC5?
BOA?

PS: Jimi Hendrix Experience was as english as it gets...
Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle and has his roots in the American Blues Music,
The British Music scene gave him a platform, where Jimi wiped the floor with the English guitar players at the time.
Yet he delivered british acid bluesrock within an english pop group. In no way may the Experience be classified as an american group.
In no way the Experience where an English pop group, the band is famous almost entirely for His revolutionary guitar work! I would like to describe them as Anglo American Band.

What is with you people? If you wanted to name the top 5 American bands on IORR, you might start with American bands that inspired the Rolling Stones -- bands that, you know, the Stones stole ideas from. Or bands whose songs the Stones covered.
The Temptations
The O'Jays
The Miracles
The Coasters
The Flying Burrito Brothers

I know - the exasperation wasn't for you, it was for the hasty and unwanted merge of the two threads by Somebody Else.

Listen to what the man himself has to say about that - in the beginning of this clip
EDIT: Is this Hendrix, btw? I'm not quite sure whether this is a faux...

Satisfaction is an Early Hendrix & Curtis Knight studio/live recording done in late 1965-January 1966. Probably The Georges Club Hackensack New Jersey!
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
composers: Mick Jagger & Keith Richard
vocals: Curtis Knight
harmony vocals: Jimi Hendrix
lead guitar: Jimi Hendrix
rhythm guitar???: unknown
bass: unknown
drums: unknown
intro
CK: "Continuing on, we're gonna do a tune made popular by the Rolling Stones. A very fabulous British group. We're British, also."
JH: "West Indies."
CK: "West British, South British."
JH: "British West Indies."
CK: (laughs)
JH: "That's down there close to Georgia, isn't it? Isn't it down there close to - "
CK: "That's pretty close to Georgia. A little tune entitled I Can't Get None."
Hendrix moved to the UK September 23 1966. He most have loved Europe and the warm welcome from other great UK Musicians that inspired Hendrix. As an Artist you get inspired on the road and travelling but you always carry your roots in your suitcase. You don't consider The Stones French Musicians in 1972?

He he, no OK, so this was as early as with Knight.
