Wasn't Booker T and the MGs THE Stax band?

hey DP! yeah the core of it was them, but also Isaac Hayes, and David Porter, on piano.. then the horn players, Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love...

this from Wikipedia...
"The sextet of Cropper, Dunn, Hayes, Jackson, Jones and Porter were collectively known as the "Big Six" within the halls of Stax, and were (either as a group, or working in various combinations) responsible for producing almost all of the label's output from about 1963 through 1969."

What a band! And Hayes and Porter were top notch writers. Listening to Hold On, I'm Coming as we speak smileys with beer

Will he?

...Escovedo...

Bluz with the prize...nicely done. I thought the Dragons would be hard for folks to pick up.

Funny enough...Alejandro is doing better than ever, Javier still gets with the Zeros time to time (with Mario sitting in for Lopez when he is doing El Vez) and Mario is doing well as a band manager now. His g/f's band Okapi Sun just got some Adidas internet commercial deal.

Those Escovedos (all of em Sheila, Coke, Pete) really should have a documentary about them...a tremendous contribution to music...and frankly...are really likeable folks too.

Ab's got the list I agree with most. Allman's have been at times so far above the rest it ceases to be funny. At other times though they've been pretty crappy.
BTW, some great stuff came out of those times with Chuck. Too bad they're hanging it up... Two of the finest guitarists around ... Now, that's 'weaving'.

Agh...Got me on the Talking Heads...they should have been there over Creedence.

So you guys like 1 Canadian band & no other bands outside the U.S. out of both Americas? Or...you knew I meant the U.S.

To be fair, my wife much prefers the term U.S., being from S. America. Then again, she also thinks we all view the map upside down...perspective...

hi sdstonesguy, been a while...glad you're still around!

Cheers!

Last time I checked Canada was part of America. And last time I read about Young's citizenship, it was US/american, no?

Just as Norway is a part of greater Sweden...so yes, absolutely correct.

And New Zealand is another state of Australia!

I am quite surprised by the fact that almost all of the replies mention only white, mainly rock, bands.

Surprised not only because, as noted in my earlier post, there are so many stellar American "black" bands that have hardly received any recognition here, but also and above all surprised because most of said bands had a great influence on the Rolling Stones.

It is also a surprise (from a statistically point of view - and more so on a Rolling Stones fan site) to see that a great part of the bands cited are not so directly linked to black music (don't take this literally). Understandable if the poll was referred to Italian or Hungarian bands, but in our case? The importance of black music is HUGE in American culture!

C

P.S. WARNING: there is NOTHING that is intended to be racist in the above, I am not accusing anybody of being racist, the word "black" is in no way intended to be offensive, as in "Say It Loud – I'm Black and I'm Proud"

That's probably because that is what most here listen to.

But let's add a few then:

Sly and the Family Stone
Sister Sledge
Commodores
Blind Boys of Alabama
Robert Randolph and the Family Band
Miles Davis Quintet
Ike and Tina Turner Band
Neville Brothers
Isley Brothers
Fishbone
...

Another contributing factor could be the fact that the thread is calling for a list of the Top 5 American bands. Myself, I didn't think "current" or "favorite" just the standard, RS Magazine, USAToday, Yahoo.com survey "best bands". Although I believe that we'd still see many "classic rock" bands on the list, if the thread was more along the lines of "your favorite American Bands" we'd probably see a more diverse list from people. Even though my initial reply was an attempt at "thinking outside the box" I'm pretty sure if I would have been trying to list my "favorites" it would have been a different list.

Another factor that may be influencing people to pick "safe" & "typical" answers could be the current trend here at IORR of people pointing out how "wrong" your opinions are. While it's fun to participate in a discussion, it's not always that much fun to have to be berated, belittled and have to defend your position to a lynch mob for multiple pages of posting while experts tell you how ignorant you are.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Many of the black artists I love are solo artists.

Sam and Dave
Otis
Arthur Conley
Joe Tex
Curtis Mayfield
Wilson Pickett
Bo Diddley
John Lee
Muddy
Chuck

etc.

But I love The Meters.

Not too fond of Jimi's american band, Band Of Gypsies.

How about George Clinton and his bands, or The Meters, or Living Colour?

Who?

If that reply was honest, I highly recommend that you start searching for some Parliament Funkadelic & Meters albums. Now. As in, drop what you're doing and go to amazon.com and choose the "One Click Ordering" option. Start with the greatest hits albums and work your way in. If money's tight, hit YouTube and enjoy... I can almost guarantee that your life will be improved by the results of your search.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Thanks but no thanks.

Not sure about his citizenship but he still lives and hangs out on his ranch in Woodside, California...that makes him American imho. Unfortunately for us locals, Billy Talbott just moved from California to South Dakota with his lovely wife Karen so we won't see him around as much. sad smiley peace

and of course the Mamas & the Papas.

So the way I see it, we have a good 30+ groups in the top 5!

Let me ask you this, not counting the Stones and the Beatles, is the top bands from (North) America and the top bands from the UK pretty much even? Which do you prefer?
