'Start Me Up', 'Worried About You', 'Waiting On A Friend'. As Doxa has said it is often how you intend to interpet great.

"Waiting On A Friend" has really grown on me during the last ten years and it is one of those songs which I always really want them to play live, much more than Start Me Up.

Stones fans are really demanding! The Stones have releases many great songs on every album, imo.

Terrifying, Continental Drift, Love Is Strong, The Worst, How Can I Stop, Laugh, I Nearly Died and Doom And Gloom are all great. Surely, they didn't change the world, but they changed my time schedule considerably grinning smiley

Yes, The Stones fans are really demanding, but guess who had made them to think so and ask so much? Who taught them to put the criteria of greatness so high?

Beats me... I really wonder why people think Winter is a great song, and Continental Drift not confused smiley

I think the truth has more to do with Stones fans, and the era they discovered the band in. For younger fans it's easier to appreciate songs from all eras, apparently.

Just a theory, though. However, the fanatic Brian-ists or Taylorites in their 20s don't scream so loud, do they?

Good point. I think this goes for players and Stones fans that were strongly influenced by Taylor and started to play the guitar in the days he was still a great lead player. People that saw him play at a young age in '73 or '75 for example. Like Doxa would say: the difference between pornography and the real thing.

I change my mind and post a message that I more or less decided to hold back:

There are levels of quality involved in such evaluations. At some points of their career more than at others a higher level probably has been attained. On the other hand, songs from certain other periods from many posters are not given credit for being semi-greats. That is what makes me react most. And when I see a light weight song as "Start Me up" nominated as great, there are other aspects at work, too.

My question is whether the greatness for many lies in the reception of songs, that is, reception from the surroundings, instead of in their inception, which from us outside the band ought to relate more to the songs. As rock often is a music for the masses, their reception is a relevant perspective, of course. Among fans, though, the inception of songs should be important as well, which would mean to see through the veil made by the times and at the songs themselves. If not, the Stones will be and really have for long been left with small chances to make songs that will be considered at least as semi-greats. Consequently, the band for decades has been left with negative incentives to make rather good song ideas be developed to become great.

One post in this thread in my reading of it touches on this. And the many posts in favour of "Doom And Gloom" have the same attitude.

I would say that Love Is Strong, Doom And Gloom, Continental Drift, Out Of Control, The Worst, Rough Justice, How Can I Stop, Under The Radar, Thru and Thru, Laugh I Nearly Died, , etc...plenty of others that still kick ass, right up there with the classics...

I think most people have the attitude that Stones cant do it anymore, when they listen to same old classics and over and over, year after year - but if you actually take the time and listen to new songs - you will realize that there's plenty of really good stuff out there - I didnt like Exile when I first heard it, but as the years went by - it became my all time favourite, as the years go by - I found lot more new songs on Bigger bang and Voodoo Lounge too that I didnt care for when I first heard it...

And now Dandelion's latest post reflects on other aspects of the issue.

Just out of curiousity, what made him more of "the real thing" than Santana, Paul Kossoff, Peter Green, Neal Schon, Robin Trower, Duane Allman and the other great guitarists at the time?

"Real thing" : Related to the Rolling Stones of course.

ok, thanks (In 75 he was with Bruce, though...). What do you think of Neal Schon's playing on the video I posted?

Good player, although different than Taylor.

Yes, in '75 Taylor played with Bruce. I saw them live in Holland. Better concerts than the two official releases, as far as I remember.

...I do object (a bit) to this thread title...
I think you mean the Most Recent Great Stones Song?

But anyway - I'd say The Very Last Great Stones Song will be on the album after the upcoming next one.

And as far as the most recent goes, I vote for this ABB 'threesome' Rough Justice - Laugh I Nearly Died - This Place Is Empty.

I never got into the Stones until the VL era, when I was about 20. But, I gravitated to the Taylor era right away, because it's just better.

I've always had the opposite theory of you, though. I think younger fans tend to overrate the newer material, as well as the newer concerts, mainly out of a need to feel like they were part of some peak era of the Stones, when in reality they/we missed it. I accept it, and envy those who got to experience all the great music from the 60s and 70s. And I like alot of the newer Stones stuff more than most.

That sounds plausible, too. Probably, there are both types of fans, though: The ones that find Saint Of Me just as strong as the best songs they released in their prime in the 60s - and vice versa, like you're saying here.

My fandom begun very much like yours. I discovered the Stones in the early 80s, and quickly after that I was amazed by the Taylor era, with the blistering solos.

After a few years, though, I learned to appreciate the 60s Stones more - and later the Pathe Marconi-era stuff. Today, I can appreciate the best from each era, if not equally - at least almost equally.

Stuff like Almost Hear You Sigh, How Can I Stop, Love Is Strong, Continental Drift, Terrifying and The Worst is timeless, and wouldn't cloud my impression of any of the classic Stones albums had they been included, imo.

I would say the last outstanding, great song of the Stones is Start Me Up. It certainly is not my favourite and it never really works live, but it's the last time they really made a song that is both typical Stones and - somehow - rises above the obvious. Any of their songs after SMU could have been done by bands like Black Crows, Aerosmithm, etc..., but SMU is both basic rock n roll but with a twist, which it has in common with previous Stones "greats", as Honky Tonk Women, Gimme Shelter or Jumping Jack Flash. It's a song even non Stones fans inmediately recognize, not just as "another typical Stones song" but as a song standing on its own merits.

However, since I see people here quite lowering the bar, let me add that I think "Anyway You Look At It" is one of the most interesting songs they have done in the past 30 years.
