Love it! In my top 10 but not my top 5. Great groove/funk influenced numbers, but I can *definitely* see why many don't care for this record. At the time I first purchased it, I thought it was easily the worst Stones album I'd ever heard (I initially liked it less than even the mid 80s albums! First bought B&B in '89). It took literally over 10 years to grow on me, but once it did it became a longstanding favorite. A grower for sure! I know I'll get flak for saying this, but I vastly prefer it to Some Girls. Is it more uneven? Yes! Does it have more variety by far than the often monochromatic (and slightly, if only slightly, overrated Some Girls)? Yes.

Okay, but I like the monochromatic brush of Some Girls, it gives it cohesiveness. It was like a discipline they adhered to. It's so easy to hear from the bonus cuts that even though those songs were recorded around the same time, they didn't fit within the Some Girl's concept. The illusion the Stones created was that the songs were interconnected. This was something they achieved with their earlier albums, and would never really be able to pull off again.

This is an album I love. I tried so hard to find it back in the LP-days. I simply love it. It's not their best album but the one I love the most.

mediocre 70s schlock. proved that IORR was not an aberration and that the band was going downhill fast.

Yup.

Nope.

Undercover was mediocre 80's schlock and that's where the downhill began...

The conver artwork is great. The music on it not so much.

Black And Blue is a great album, with a good collection of different songs WITHIN a context: Black music.

Some Girls is also a great album, with a remarkable collection of different songs WITHIN a context: New York.

Monochromatic?
Pop, funk/disco, country, blues, pop rock, rock'n'roll, new wave. How much more diverse can it actually get?...

It's a fantastic album and possibly their best sounding one of the 70s sonically speaking, or at least up there with Sticky Fingers.

I have only great memories of listening to it in that hot summer of 76....staying out late, getting blasted with groovy chicks, seeing the Stones 6 times and having that album as the soundtrack as the summer months gave way to punk.

Here's my rating.

Hot Stuff - 10/10
Hand of Fate - 10/10
Cherry Oh Baby 8/10
Memory Motel - 10/10
Hey Negrita - 9/10
Melody 8/10
Fool To Cry - 8/10
Crazy Mama - 9/10

And yep, I don't mind Cherry Oh Baby. It's loose, sloppy and makes you want to sing along with it.

Black and Blues is a 10/10 on my book.

One of the first Stones records I bought on CD (I can remember the American print with the red title on the spine).

Just can't get enough of it.

This was for a long time my worst Stonesalbum. But it has grown on me. I guess my musictaste is developing and I always search for new things in the music I listen to. As an example: the guitarsound on Hand of fate is fantastic. And Hot Stuff really has a good groove with nice guitar-riffs.This was something I didn`t hear when I first bought the album, but when listening to it now I really enjoy it. I think it first stood out as such a different Stonesalbum to me that I didn`t like it. And maybe it was because it doesn`t have a really strong hitsong on it, but the album as a whole is strong with good sound.

So what is the worst/ best Stones album imo? I don`t know. They`re all from different eras with different sound and qualities....

My God, where do you go for numbers for songs like Gimmee Shelter, JJF, Let it Loose, on and on, dozens and dozens of Stones songs that wipe the floor with any of these except for Memory Motel?

Hot Stuff is a nice riff. I dig it, turn it up when it comes on. It's not in the same conversation with dozens of great Stones songs, classics and unknowns. 10 out of 10??? Are you kidding???

Hot Stuff is awful.

I can remember clearly the first time I played Black and Blue, hearing that first horrible guitar.
