A sexist and inappropriate premise.
What not best album by a male artist? or a homosexual or a heterosexual or a mineral or vegetable?

My top ten, in no order, are:
1. Fashionably Late: Linda Thompson
2. Norma Waterson - the one with Black Muddy River & St Swithins Day
3. Marianne Faithfull: Vagabond Ways
4. Billie Holliday - Lady In Satin
5. Evie Sands - Anyway You Want Me
6. Bobbie Gentry - Delta Suite
7. Nina Simone - And Piano
8. Emmylou Harris - Wrecking Ball
9. Dinah Washington - Sings Bessie Smith
10. Ute Lemper: Passionate Kiss
I would also through in an honourable mention for Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn, June Carter Cash's Pressing On, Mavis Staples' Hope at The Hideout, James Brown's Funky Divas' compilation, Dusty In Memphis, Laura Nyro's Gonna Take A Miracle, Lucinda Williams' Sweet Old World & Car Wheels, Irma Thomas' Simply Grand, Diana Krall's Girl In The Other Room, and most of Cassandra Wilson's Blue Note albums. Cassandra Wilson is an amazing vocalist, and I heartily recommend her albums on Blue Note.
