australians have discovered how to make boots right?

if not i think us americans (and canadians) should share this technology with our allies

then they too can enjoy a leisurely stroll in the snow without the danger of frostbitten toeswinking smiley

We'll survive. By Saturday it's supposed to warm up to about -10C.
Thanks for the warm thoughts.

In Seattle we had an ice storm overnight on top of some exisiting snow. The city is basically shut down. All bus service in the city has been cancelled & there is only 1 open runway at the airport, that is if you can get to the airport. In the US a total of 3600 flights have been cancelled today. On 1 of the busiest travel days of the year. Saying things are ugly would be an understatement.

It’s pretty grim in Toronto as well. I ran some errands early, before it got really going, and got back just in time. Watching the mess from my window, I’m glad that I’m not in the woods this week as the electricity has been out there for 8 hours. Stay safe, warm and dry everybody. Leave an extra carrot for Rudolph, it’s going to be a hard slog this Christmas.

i'm about 100 miles south of you in the foothills and the hi-way into town is shut down

the powers out and there's about a little under 1/2 an inch of ice on everything including the steps in and out of my house making it impossible to safely get down the stairs outside

thankfully we brought in a good load of firewood and kindling for the woodstove so we won't freeze

This is sadly accurate. (For those of you in the US, Myanmar and Burma, ‘plus 1’ is 1 degree Celsius, or 33 degrees Fahrenheit …)

(Also, Hairball, we hate you! grinning smiley )

Just north of you, much of Vancouver/lower mainland is shut down too! Airport was screwed earlier this week, many stuck at YVR for over a day! My friend was going to go to Vancouver Island today to see family but highways are terrible and ferries got cancelled. Now we're supposed to warm up tomorrow and get heavy rain! Too bad we can't send this weather down to the US South West where they can use water!

Some places are experiencing flooding around me. I live close to the escarpment so I don't have any worries about that, just the 115 km/hr winds and the blowing snow are my worries.

That's awful. Not that bad here in SE LA. NW LA it's been in the single digits with wind chills about 4 below. North Alabama had lake effect snow!!!

So far we've not gotten too cold, nothing to really worry about in terms of stupidity, but the duration of not warming up, even getting above freezing, is considerable longer than normal.

This kind of thing usually happens in late January through mid February, not late December.

In the midwest and northward I know all time new record low temps have been happening. And the cyclone about to go over Ontario or is could have a low pressure equivalent to a mid category 3 hurricane (about 850 millibars), which, from what I've been able to see (been very busy and not on much lately) is or will be a new record possibly as well.

Hoover Beach a few miles south of Buffalo had an evacuation 79 mph winds. It’s still happening.
Come and get for some wings!
