Quite enjoyed driving into work and listening to a new Stones song. Actually better than I thought it was going to be...and thank God no sign of Chuck Leavell. I would have liked a little more of the lead guitar to be mixed up higher. All in all a huge improvement on the dross from ABB. Let's see what comes next!

My thoughts too,crumbling_mice. Only one thing to come next as far as new music goes unfortunately.

P.S. It reminds me a little bit of the B-52s in that it's"up" and makes you want to dance. Otherwise, it's Mick Jagger meets Rolling Stones!

Very disappointing. Keith's part (or what there is of it) sounds like it was phoned in. Lucky he has two other guitarists in the band to cover him.

Lyrics are absolutely horrible.

Love the production but it doesn't make up for a weak song. As suspected this is just more Stones by numbers either made up in the studio in desperation to find something that sounds like the Stones to put on the latest greatest hits CD - or as someone else said, salvaged from an outtake of Goddess in the blah blah.

Yes they are pushing 70 (or already are 70) - but so what. Bad is bad. thumbs down

Classic rhythm guitar in open G, not phoned in.

Clearly, this is a Mick tune. The band didn't have much time in the studio, hence Keith is playing just a straight rhythm.

Let's see how he plays on his song; One More Shot first, shall we?

Just heard it (twice!) on Radio2.... fantastic, classic groove, real rock'n'roll and I instantly liked it, which is a great sign.

The presenter joked that they had an exclusive for 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the world so they played it twice in a row.

GRRReat :-)

Nothing fantastic or classic about it really. Less than average if you ask me. Just a shouting MJ on a ZZ Top beat. Not tipical Stones at all.

<<< Just a shouting MJ on a ZZ Top beat. Not typical Stones at all >>>

That's pretty much my take on it too, there's not a lot that's either fantastic or classic about it, I'd have to agree.

Well if you look at it that way, why not say that the early Stones songs are just Jagger howling over a blues beat. You can make anything sound bad with that argument. Yes it's a tad ZZ Top, but so what? CYHMK is a tad Santana. You may not like it, and that's your right, but that argument is not valid. It does sound like a Jagger penned song, but he said that he just writes and uses what he thinks fits The Stones.

It sounds more like a Jagger Solo song than a Stones song. It does not have a Charlie Watts signture sound and that really hurts it. All in all I like it, the title and theme of the song is very current.

Doom And Gloom official video

Already on Youtube:

Re: Doom And Gloom official video

the current convention in pop music is to release an official lyrics video,
followed later on by the video video

for what its worth, its the best lyrics video i've yet seen, and there's been
some good ones recently

and to repeat myself, anyone? Is it "bowing to the rich and you worry
about the poor"? Its the only place the words drop out of the lyrics video
without the words being obvious.

Gloom and Doom as an opener....!

The more I listen to the song I'm getting convinced that it'll be a great opener for shows.

I personally think that this song would be great as an opener.
It would certainly set the pace and feel for upcoming shows!

I like the mix between the modern touch to it and the sexy rock and roll that the Stones always stood up for.

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

doom and gloom with drumcomputer?
Posted by: guitarbastard ()

just heard doom and gloom for the first time. kinda like it. one of the better stones outputs in the last years. but is that a drumcomputer instead of charlie??

I didn't think/couldn't tell if it was Charlie either. Honestly, aside from maybe the guitar which kind of sounds like Keith at times, the song could be passed off as a Mick solo track.

Right, drums is !!!!!!! After that, this is jagger stuff. Don't need that!

Doubt it is a drum computer, but it isn't Charlie for sure. Couldn't hear much Wood or Richards either...

it sounds to steady for charlie. not that charie isnt steady, but it has a unnatural touch to it. maybe a mix of charlie and sequencing parts?

A simple but groovy track, it is not an embarassment. I am not sure, but it could be Charlie on drums, but who knows. Why should it not be Charlie?

Because Mick brough the basic track into the recording studio and the drums were already there?

Charlie is in there somewhere but perhaps something else as well.

Who knows what the deal was in the mystery two days in the studio?

Anyway.. it sounds OK.

Album version at iTunes has louder guitars and Charlie on drums, it's much more "rock."
