A nice little R&R song, boardering on cliche Stones though. Fantastic guitar sound by Keith. Taylor's part is nice, but I can't help feeling that it sounds a bit tired in a way, like Taylor was bored playing it. On the outtake he plays a lick before the track starts -that lick is a typical technical run through, somehting your fingers play while your watching TV. Every guitarist will recognize that.

Is this the most distorted guitar track Taylor ever recorded with the Stones?
And is it the only whammy bar-based solo ever recorded on a Stones track (Ronnie might have snuck in some whammy bar on Whip)?

Actually, Taylor's tone in the verses is quite clean, not distorted. There's some whammy use on Undercover and Dirty Work as well.

...if someone were to ask me why this song kicks ass--I would have no idea how to explain it.

Ronnie uses the whammy bar quite a bit although I can't think of specific solos at the moment but I know I've seen him use the whammy bar on loads of solos at live shows.

There is very little on GHS or IORR that does not sound strained.

There is very little on GHS or IORR that does not sound strained. DLS is a perfect example. How do you explain the dead end riff on If You Can't Rock Me? The albums are neither fun nor sexy. Generally speaking, even Taylor's playing does not save the day. There is some experimentation in there, but much of it feels halfhearted. It was time for a break, but it ended up being the beginning of a long slow death.

Keith used whammy bar on either his Epiphone Casino or Gibson les Paul for What A Shame, Down Home Girl and a few other tracks from that time.

Doesn't sound like a Les Paul to me...what is Taylor using on Dance Little Sister? I really like the guitarparts on this track!

Ok, Strat it is... Mick plays a Strat on Billy Preston's Live In Europe 1973 as well. Fun to hear, 'cause Taylor = Les Paul in my mind.

It was NEVER "just filler" to me...

Keith's guitar sounds P90(ish).
It's that dirty grind sound.
Was he playing a Gibson Les Paul Junior?
I've suddenly grown very fond of Gibson P90 guitars.
Ronnie was playing one with Macca recently. Ronnie and Keith have used them a lot on tour over the years.

I wouldn't be surprised if he played Strat on Time Waits For No One and If You Can't Rock Me either.

I am quite sure Keith uses the neck humbucker of a Tele here. Taylor is on Strat.

Time Waits absolutely, IYCRM sounds more like a LP to me.
