Attn Guitarists: Your Stones Recordings

For the guitar players here. Do you have any recordings of you covering Stones material?

If so, post a link and describe your setup a little.

Also, a question for the bedroom @#$%&, like me. How do you go about deciding what guitar to play, when there are several guitar tracks on a song? For example, IORR. Several guitars going on. Do you mix and match, stick to one guitar throughout?

No recordings, but as for what guitars... when I'm playing along with Ronnie's parts, I'll use the Strat. Taylor? Les Paul. Keith? Either the Gibson for the '60s and some of the '70s stuff and a Tele for the rest.

Last year I played at a party a friend had. We were doing Casino Boogie, and I put up a bit on youtube of myself playing a bit of it so the other guys in the band could get an understanding of what I would be playing. They were 3 hours away and there was no rehearsal, just show up to the party and play. Also did SFTD, Parachute Woman and SFM. CB was the best though I think..

I use mostly a '71 Tele, a '57 Les Paul Jr. (for open G), for Stones stuff. I also use a Telecaster Custom. Had a Mustang Bass, but didn't like it. Stones bass sounds good on my Vox Sidewinder. for acoustic I use a 1964 Gibson Country & Western.

I am no serious guitar player, but it is my great hobby. A couple of weeks ago I actually created a youtube channel, mainly to motivate myself to learn the whole songs, since I realized that I pretty much always learned the main riff but was not able to put together any song as the whole. So I started to learn the remaining parts in order to upload some videos on youtube, I started with some U2 tunes (please don't throw stones at me :-) ) and on Sunday I added Brown Sugar. Start Me Up will hopefully follow this week and some more Stones in the next weeks, as time allows.

As for the guitars - I don't have so many to choose from, so for anything in standard tuning I have a Fender Strat, for open G I have a Tele (but it is a Squier - hopefully I will get a Fender Tele some day) and then I have a black Squier Strat for anything else.

And here is my channel with the rest of the videos: [www.youtube.com]

I use a Tele for the open G-stuff, occationally a strat.

A strat, occasionally a Les Paul, for the lead parts.

I have done loads of recordings, but they are 20 years old, and not very good smiling smiley

I did this.

It's kinda based on the great alternative version the Stones did as a video promo.

Very cool people!!! Keep the recordings coming. I just got some new recording equipment and just waiting for my mic to show up.

When I asked what guitar you play, I meant something like this. However, listing what guitars you tend to use, when playing Stones material, is cool too.

For Song X
I'll play gtr 1 for the intro.
Then gtr 2 for the verse.
Back to gtr 1 for the chorus.
Gtr 3 for the solo.
Etc

Being a bedroom @#$%&, I find sticking to one gtr throughout the whole songs sounds kind of thin, at times.

Don't swop guitars, buy a VOX DA5 and change the amp model, DI into the soundcard.

Actually there's lots of amp modelling out there, but I think the Vox DA5 is simple and perfect.

(Yeah I know people will go on about micing up real valve amps and in an ideal world that's what I would do. But I've got neighbours...)

I recorded a blues cd last year and covered "Black Limousine" and the Stones version of "Stop Breakin' Down". Don't have either ripped to the computer but I'll try to do so and post a link.

I would usually record my rhythm guitar parts first. Usually two of them, one in the middle and one in a right or left channel. I usually just used a Strat or whatever I happened to pick up (I play mostly Strat's altho I have a Les Paul, an ES-335 and a Firebird). Then I would record a bunch of takes on different tracks of guitar solos. Then I'd keep the best one. Of course I'd record vocals and bass and percussion and such but you're probably not interested in that. If I had more than one lead guitar in a song, I'd almost always use two different guitars. For example, on "Five Long Years" I played almost all of the leads on a Les Paul, except for a short slide solo I threw in after the second verse, which was done on a '70's reissue Strat in open G, capoed in A.

For "Black Limousine", I recorded a rhythm part in open G, a rhythm part in standard (both probably on two different Strats although I'm not sure) and then overdubbed the leads. The slide parts were done on the '70's reissue Strat in open G and the "fretted" leads were done on another Strat with Texas Special pickups.

For "Stop Breakin' Down" I used basically the same guitar for all of it, although I think the first rhythm tracks were done on something different. I played it all in open G, capoed in A. I double tracked part of the leads, using the same '70's reissue Strat set up for slide. I wasn't crazy about the sound of that guitar BTW. I ended up getting rid of it but I could get a decent sound out of the 2 and 4 positions.

After the vocals were recorded, I would go back and overdub the "fills" in between the vocals. That was usually the last step before mixing.

This is just the way I recorded those songs. Another method might work better for you. Hope this gives you some ideas though.

While amp models have come a long way, I find most of them poor substitutes for the real thing. Starting with the right guitar is the only way you will really get the tone you want, imo. You can't fake it with amp modeling, well you can, but the results are not that great.

Vox are pretty good at it, just my opinion.

The first 5 amp setting on the DA5 are all very useable (especially the AC15 and AC-30 T cool smiley, the high gain amps are not so good, I never play that kind of stuff anyway.

Ah, glad you asked, Duke!

For home studio I use a 1948 Gibson BR-9 lap steel amp. It has no effects so I use my Line 6 modeling pod just for reverbs and tremelo (also does a killer Leslie). For band use I have one of those new Gibson hand-made tube amps (I forget the model number). It is 35 watts but has an attenuator switch so you can play at low volumes. It has reverb and tremelo and sounds fantastic.

I stupidly sold my Gibson stereo 79 RVT, probably the coolest amp ever made.

Great thread. My hats off to all of you. Love it how everyone does that little 'Keith move' when they pull up on the strings.

Come on. There has to be more of you out there! Keep posting more vids.

Although not a Stones song per se....is a Stones influenced song....just a hobby, can't play guitar, bass or drums that well but can put them together into something passing as a song....

MIM telecaster with a little '59 Seymour Duncan in Bridge played through a Vox AD50 modelling amp. AC15 and AC30 amp models for the guitar channels. Slide just to add some interest. Guitar parts sound sort of like weaving but is simply planned to leave some space for the other, nothing really ad libbed. Bass is Squier P-bass, recorded line out from Vox amp to digital 8 track, drums recorded with 3 mics, one on bass drum, one snare/hi hat and one in front to catch toms and cymbals. Digital drums for this one, my playing for second and latest one.....and pic of my set up in basement....not that anyone cares : )

I personally think the Vox has killer tone!

Dual guitars or die : ) thanks to growing up with the Stones.

I actually play drums with other guys we call ourselves Distillery...

wow real fake horns!!

We have recorded King Bee and You`re better Man than I -The Yardbirds (now on YouTube) and several other songs in R&B , Motown and early 60`s rocknroll style.I`d love to record more Stones songs but my voice has different range than Mick`s and i`m rather guitarist than vocalist. It is real pleasure for me and my band to hear such compliments from Stones fans.
