Don't know what mrD was after, but Highwire blows away Neo-Con. One of the truly unlistenable Stones song in the entire canon. A true deep-freeze turkey that one.

Although I agree with the lyrics in Sweet Neocon they're made in a shite way. The actual music (disregarding the song and lyrics) is pretty good. I like those kinds of semi-dance tracks sometimes. Highwire is better. It's a real gem and it grooves like a motherf*cker.

I always thought "Sweet Neo Con" was a cousin of sorts to "Jah is Not Dead."

Both is shite-songs musical and for the politics I'll rather go for 'The spider and the fly'...

I like them both. I would have preferred Keith's rhythm guitar on Highwire, though.

I think JumpingKentFlash is right on the money here. I totally agree.

There is some tendency in Micks lyrics to become more blunt over the years. The subtle
and sometimes obscure metaphores he used in the beginning of his songwriting carreer
(she said she liked the way I held the microphone, there will always be a space in my
parking lot, war children, it's just a shot away, love, sister, is just a kiss away to
name a few), made way over the years for a directness that might have had a purpose to
"shock and awe", but many times had the effect of simplification. "Well, my heavy throbber's itchin'
Just to lay a solid rhythm down" is miles away from the lyrics of Sparks will fly.

The same goes for the political lyrics. If you compare the lyrics of Sweet Black Angel,
to pick one of the earlier political songs, they are pure poetry compared to phrases
like "where's the money gone? In the Pentagon". One can agree or disagree with the ideology
Mick expresses in his songs, I don't care (well I do, but I better keep those cares
for myself), but the way he wrote them down is what makes a song stand out or easily
dismissed.

>>>>>>>>>>>>where's the money gone? In the Pentagon <<<<<<<<<<<<<I actually like that line...absolutely no ambiguity about Mick's thoughts on that matter..........that's refreshing when so many bands seem to like mysterious

well, it's very simple, but I just can't stand "Sweet Neocon"
To me, one of the worst Stones song ever !

When it comes to politics I prefer Keith remark in Shine A light - Hey Clinton, I'm bushed eh-he-he-he (wink)

these are 2 songs i never liked. if i have to chose, i prefer highwire,
but nothing special.
nothing against the lyrics of neocon at all, i simply don't like the song itself, its music..

Neocon is a horrible track. Reminds me of Suck On The Jugular off Voodoo Lounge. Just junk. Gives the doubters a reason to say that the Stones don't have it anymore. Poor songwriting.

Highwire is great. Should have been on Steel Wheels. Beautiful guitars. Classic.

"Sweet Neocon VS Highwire"

One is terrible, the other beyond gag inducing. I'll leave it to everyone else to ascertain which is which.

Sweet Neocon has some of Jaggers best lyrics in a while. Direct, simple, and to the point. It's a full circle of simple.....People complain that Jagger is too cagey and whiley and they can't get a read...here's one example where he takes the think right out of you....sometimes you just can't win.

i'd like one order of neocon; hold the highwire. oh, and a slice of suck on the jugular for dessert. thanks.

If Mick had put even an hour's work into making the melody of SNC's chorus less like a drawn out version of a taunting kid going "Nah nah nah" and given it a bit more musical content, I think it would stand up on its own. There's some great bite and truth to half the lyrics (like HW, giving needed sentiments sorely lacking in the many other younger bands of 1989 and 2005, most whom never broach 'political sentiment' or ever speak to social issues); but it just doesn't come off as a very adult indictment of its lyrical target, and the chorus and lack of dynamics make it hard to take seriously.

I agree. Not very good musically and not a very good melody but the lyrics are one of the best.

I like both but Sweet Neocon is much more avant-garde and different than Highwire, therefore I prefer Sweet Neocon cos they dare to play around with the melody which works+I like Mick's harp in it. Highwire is just HTW reworked but it's groovy and the lyrics are ace. SOTJ from VL, now THAT is a s***e song

You're a rag trade girl, You're the queen of porn, You're the easiest lay on the white house lawn!!

I like "Highwire'

"Sweet Neo Con" is good politics but bad songwriting.

I don't like Sweet Neocon just sound and structure-wise (reminds me of Back to Zero, which I also don't like...except where Mick makes monkey sounds around 1:10) but also I can't help but think what Annie Lebovitz said, (paraphrase from memory) "I least like to photograph people who've been in the entertainment business for a long time, because they're so far removed from reality." And these are the same people (*cough*) who shove their political "wisdom" down your throat.

I bring this up every time these songs get discussed -- lyrically, they're both too cautious, even if, as marco writes, the phrases are blunt. mick hedges his bets in both songs. "Highwire" is not really anti-war, it just addresses (fairly accurately) the politics behind Gulf War I, then "supports the troops" in a very safe way. "Sweet Neo Con" is even more cowardly, as at the end he sings something like, "If it turns out you [Bush] are right, I'll eat my hat." Kind of goes along with the childish quality of the music. "Nyah nyah nyah, but don't hurt me if you win."

musically, "Highwire" has become overrated, I think--not a bad rock song, but nothing special, and "Sweet Neo Con" is unlistenable--and I say this liking songs like "Rain Fall Down."

Highwire sounds kinda paint-by-numbers, musically not too bad but the lyrics felt kinda awkward in a forced way at the time (Like Rock and a Hard Place). Sweet Neo-con is a ridiculous turd of a song and one of the reasons why I don't bother with that album. SUCH a shit song.
