Harm City still in mourning over the Ravens going down to Pittsburgh. Bunch of p*ssies. I'm from DC and I don't care, so it's the

Steelers. The best band in the land. Green Bay favored by 3 today! I don't believe it.

Yes. It's the 112,000 owners of the Green Bay Packers, the only fan-owned, not-for-profit pro team in the United States.

[blog.newyorker.com]

But having grown up in Pittsburgh, I'm rooting for the Steelers. Two great offenses, two great defenses. However, Green Bay is not so hot against the run, and the Steelers have 2 really good running backs. Add in the fact that 17 Steelers have 2 Super Bowl victories under their belt (starting with the Stones halftime Super Bowl), there are more players who know what it's like to have to deal with the pressures of the big game, and that Troy P is basically back to 100% recovered from injuries, and the Steelers should pull this one off. Possible weak point for them is their new center, who had to just learn the position after the starter all season went down in the Jets game.

Sports Illustrated even mistakenly labeled the colour of the Steelers as black and gold, as do a lot of people. I guess they be colour blinded - they be black and yellow!

There is only one black and gold NFL team and dat's the New Orleans Saints.

Packers say their colors are green & gold...but really it's green & yellow.
Their helmets are a sparkly, metallic yellow.

I think, long ago, they were blue & gold...similar to Notre Dame.

Close. It'll be 34-27 Steelers. Or some variation that has the Steelers with a 4 and the Packers with a 7. Since those are my numbers on my office pool.grinning smiley

Yeah, no shit - especially when they're named after a meat packing company.

Which could be funny in itself...

I never knew that.

So they had to associate Wisconsin cheese with their team to avoid being called "meatheads?"

Re: OT: Super Bowl

Eh, now that I don't know. Wisconsin happens to be a state that makes a lot of cheese and is the cheese industry of the US. It's just happenstance that they became cheeseheads probably - green and gold - the colours of cheese ha ha, although some sites say it started with the CHI White Sox as an insult.

"Lambeau's employer -- a war-time industry called the Indian Packing Company, where he worked as a shipping clerk for $250/month -- into putting up money for jerseys.

Because the company provided jerseys and permitted the use of its athletic field for practice, the club was identified in its early publicity as a project of the company. With this tie-in, the name "Packers" was a natural, and Packers they have been ever since, although the Indian Packing Company had practically faded out of the picture before that first season was half over."

fairly certain that's not true. first time i heard it was on morning radio in Milwaukee
in the early '80s. Vaguely remember a few years later, when the cheese-head name caught on, that
the DJ wished he would've trademarked it or something. The foam cheese hats came later.

Ah, I had it mixed up. Although it having to do with the CHI White Sox was on heh heh.

From [www.answerbag.com]

Green Bay packers’ fans are often referred as “cheeseheads”. The people of Wisconsin are referred to with the term due to its cheese production. The name was given by the Chicago White Sox fans at a Milwaukee Brewers game as an insult in 1987. Since then, with the passage of time, the name and the hats have been embraced by Packers fans.

sorry....but answerbag.com is not correct. the term cheesehead existed long before 1987.

not saying White Sox fans didn't use the term but...they did NOT originate it.

I've lived here in Wisconsin all of my life except for a few years in the '60s.
