Slipping Away .........

But it has that great "All I want..." uplift in the middle...not that sad to me.

I guess Rockman had the recent devastating weather circumstances in Australia in mind.

No Use in Crying
A song about love, pain and ending a relationship even though you still love the person....and the sense of hopelessness....
after the pleas of 'stay away from me...' after the last verse, Mick repeats in falsetto.. 'I love you, I love you, I love youuuuu....'

Breaks my heart everytime....

Ain't no use in crying
Stay away from me

Standing in the kitchen
Looking way out cross the fields
You see a face in the window
It not real, it not real

Ain't no use in crying
Stay away from me
Ain't no use

Standing at the station
Gazing down the track
There ain't no train coming baby
I ain't never, never coming back

Standing in the balcony
Looking way towards cross the sea
If you see your ship come a sailing
It not me, it not me
It's not me
Stay away from me
Hey you

Ain't no use, ain't no use
Stay away from me
Ain't no use in crying
Stay away from me

Not a Stones tune but:

Feelin' Alright lyrics

Seems I've got to have a change of scene 'Cause every night I have the strangest dreams. Imprisoned by the way it could have been. Left here on my own or so it seems. I've got to leave before I start to scream. But someone's locked the door and took the key. You feelin' alright? I'm not feelin' too good myself. Well, you feelin' alright? I'm not feelin' too good. Well, say, you sure took me for one big ride And even now I sit and wonder why. That when I think of you I start to cry. I just can't waste my time, I must keep dry. Gotta stop believin' in all you lies 'Cause there's too much to do before I die. Don't get too lost in all I say Though at the time I really felt that . that was then, now it's today; I can't get off so I'm here to stay. Till someone comes along and takes my place With a different name and, yes, a different face

'No Use in Crying' gets my vote too.

Parts of 'Shine a Light' are very sad....
'Just seemed too many flies on you...I just can't brush them off'.

'Already Over Me'

'Always Suffering'

I don't think they are capable of making a truly sad song. It's not in their groove. I think they can make moody songs, or even slightly depressing songs but Jagger is not a sad song singer.

There's an air of doom to that song that strikes me as rather sad. "This shot will be my last", and all that.

A song that has always touched me very deeply is Memory Motel.

The tempo, the key, the lyrics...all so beautifully paced and descriptive. The story of a doomed love...so plaintive and melancholy...yet no pathos, no overwrought drama...just a very gentle and mature coda to a lost love. And Keef's lovely vocal touches on his chorus are beautiful. The ending notes are just magic...

It is such a perfectly executed song and the absolute highlight of Black and Blue.

The funny thing about No Expectations is that lyric-wise it's very sad. Musically, it signals hope and dreams, imo

All About You

Memory Motel is pretty darn sad

Coming Down Again always makes me sad, because it goes on for too long and you kinda suddenly realize, this album (Goat's Head Soup) is a bit of a dog by Stones standards up to that point...

Those '72 Love In Vain's are pretty sad...it was great the way they would come out and be playing balls-to-the wall, six or seven songs, then slooooow it down, then transition into the acoustic stuff etc. LIV was always perfectly placed in the set list, I thought.

I think you're right. A good question to ask would be, "Why can't they?"
