OT: Possibly the most bizzare backup act pairing

A buddy just turned me on to this bit of performance history:

Jimmi Hendrix backing the Monkeys

"They started to write some of their own material and went on tour in 1967, supported, bizarrely, by Jimi Hendrix, who was booed off stage by teenage girls yelling for Davy Jones (Hendrix finally gestured obscenely and stomped off)."

Would have loved to see that one!

The Who and Herman's Hermits.

The Who were the opening act!

It's amusing to see that even the guitar-god that was Jimi Hendrix, dabbled with the great British package tour early on. It wasn't all about wooing the likes of Clapton and Page at the Marquee and Bag Of Nails.

How about Syd Barrett and Dick Clark? Pink Floyd performing their third single Apples and Oranges on American Bandstand, 5 November 1967.

Back in the days when I was as skinny as a bean post (whatever that means) I would order just that at this place called Mike's Pizza in Encino, a restaurant frequented by (Dragnet's) Jack Webb...but that's a story for another time!

Good idea! I'm doing a 4-cheese pizza tonight: fontina, provolone, parmesan, and mozzarella. Nothing bizarre about those pairings--or should I say quadrupling, or double pairing, or simply delicious? Whether you're a Jimi Hendrix or a Monkees fan, or a Who or Herman's Hermits fan, that is something on which we can all agree.

This site has a list of strange opening acts...

Strange Opening Acts

The Monkees/Hendrix are #1. Prince opening for The Stones in '81 is on there too, but I don't find it that odd. Timberlake is also on there for the Toronto Rocks thing.

I hate to bust the pizza post, but being a canuck I love the use of the term "Canadian Bacon" by our friends to the south. We do not use the term nor particularly the shape of that particular cut of the swine. How this food description got that name escapes me, you did not see a Canadian eating it?

Bizarre act pairing: David Bowie & Bing Crosby, and DB & Cher.

About 10 years ago, I was in Toronto for a biz trip & ordered a pizza. I asked for Canadian bacon & pineapple and the gal on the phone said to me "Sir, I can't confirm that the bacon was made or processed in Canada." smiling smiley

Now that is cute, if a canuck wants 'ham' and pinaple we order a Hawian, go figure? So if I ordered a hawian in the US would they tell me they could not confirm if the pizza came from there? Seems more exotic I guess to name your foods from somewhere else.

My mom actually saw Hendrix live in Sweden 1967 when going to see another -- today forgotten -- band. I don't think she had a clue who Jimi was before he hit the stage that evening.

Edit: The band was probably the Swedish band Mersey Sect, which included Swedish folkrock singer Pugh Rogefeldt. Hendrix was the main act and they were the opening, but my mom was there for Mersey Sect. eye rolling smiley

Some of those are not very odd, at all. Some are a little amusing in hindsight, perhaps: I.E. The Who opening for Herman's Hermits.

A friend saw U2 open for Slade circa 1979. Obviously, no-one at the time could predict quite how big this Irish act would become, but Slade were on their way out at that time, too. If Bono and co were a little older and opening for Slade in '72, it'd seem a little more real, perhaps.

If you go to a butcher in New York and ask for a New York Steak, they will look at you like you are nuts.

Same in Kansas city with Kansas City Steak.

Last time I was in England, they had no idea what Cheerios were.

and most folks in San Francisco have no idea what rice a roni is.....so

your statement doesn't surprise me at all

You remember correctly. Actually, that was the Experiences first-ever concert.

I'm not French, but my impression of Hallyday is that he was a great imitator of the American rock n' roll acts of the 1950's and 60's. He'd take an American release, record it in French and have a huge hit with it.

Also amusing in hindsight:

I saw Van Halen (in '77, before they were signed ) open for Nils Lofgren at the Santa Monica Civic.

In fact, a few months earlier they opened another show at the Civic we went to, in which they were third on the bill, followed by Flo & Eddie, and the headliners.... Sparks!

I saw Dwight Yoakum at McCabes in the early 80's--again, before being signed to a major label-- as the opening act for.... the Meat Puppets.
