The strangest opening act that I recall seeing was Yes opening for Black Sabbath in 1971

That's one hell of a couple I'd give my left arm to see, in that year. I'm certain there are lots of people who love both bands today, but yeah, back in those days they weren't really in the same genre (I'm not saying they are any more now, but the fans are more cross-genre today).

The Who and The Grateful Dead was the most bizarre pairing I've ever seen.

King Crimson opening for Ten Years After in ft worth 75 kinda weird because they were so different. Doug Kershaw being second on a 3 bill act with the Stones in 78 (I loved it tho and in Texas there were plenty more people familiar with Doug than Peter Tosh!) Van Halen being third on the bill under Journey and Ronnie Montrose at the same venue the Stones played in Ft Worth 78...right after the debut album was released and they kicked both other band's asses. Currently the strangest pairing I've seen is Gary Clark Jr opening for Dave Matthews..to me thats as strange as the Hendrix/Monkees pairing!

Not Sting with the Dead?

I saw the two shows at RFK and the two groups went together quite well, thank you.

No worries. It does sound like an odd combo but they go together quite well. Like a PB & B&B pickle sandwich.

San Francisco, California, 2005...my sister has been there...
very interesting when hundreds of leathermen are headbanging
to streets of love...

There is an odd pairing out on tour this Spring:

Black Keys and The Flaming Lips.

Like both bands, though the Flaming Lips are the much better of the 2, live.
