NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The backup singers are purely sublime. And create The Stones ragged alter in their church of excess to fully appreciate the beauty in skating so close to death. Wonderful and holy.

treaclefingerseven the cover is a little suspect. Black and White...how cliche!Quote

I always thought that Micks lead and Keith backing vocals destroyed Exile. Not to even mention the guitars - without them Exile would sound totally different. While I am at it, I would also argue that also Bills bass makes Exile horrible. Charlies drumming...my god, what a letdown. Nicky plink plink Hopkins - I would not let him anywhere near a rock and roll record. And the lyrics are not very convincing too. Theres also some awful sax on the record. And some cheap sounding percussion.
Thinking about it, Exile is only saved by the female backing vocals. And the cover.
Ever since they stopped including the postcards, they totally lost me.

Forgot to mention how horrible Al Perkins' steel guitar playing and Bill Plummer's stand-up bass playing were.
There is not much left, right?

This thread must be a joke.
"Guy walks into a bar with 2 versions of Exile on Mainstreet under his arm, bartender says to him, he says, 'why you got two copies of that record under your arm', the guys says to him, he says, '...........insert punchline here......."
Let's see if we can complete the joke!
He says; "i love this record so much that i wouldn't know what to do when i would loose it, so i bought two copies, if i loose one, i still have the other".
The only thing funny about that punchline my friend, is the fact that you thought it was funny!

but they do help to ruin any exile songs performed by the vegas stones.

In my opinion I think Mick shouldn't have put the female back up on some Exile tracks. I think without it would have been great.

Is this a good or bad thing in your opinion? And really Exile is so much more than just back up singers or gospel influence, not sure I get the fixation. It is double album for gods sake, kind of runs the gamut of the Stones influences and that is what makes it great.

"The frequent use of backup singers and horns on Exile, IMO, makes it more of an "ensemble" record than a "core 5" Rolling Stones album (compared to Sticky Fingers, for example, where a larger share of what you hear is Mick, Keith, Mick T, Bill, and Charlie). In a sense, it foreshadows the number of musicians who would be on stage with the Stones in the later part of their career." Quote drewmaster/Drew.
An interesting opinion. Those who love Exile (me too) should not be blind for it. Imo it there's too much horns on Exile. Sometimes I think: why a sax solo again, I want to hear Mick T. playing the solo instead of Keys. I'm also not fond of the sax as an instrument. As for the backup vocals: I have no problem with them on Exile, they are not dominant and often fit in well. But later the backup vocals were replacing an essential part of the band itself, covering its shortcomings.

Rocks Off - Horns
Rip This Joint - Sax
Shake Your Hips - Horns
Casino Boogie - Sax
Tumbling Dice - CHICKS
Sweet Virginia - Sax, various people singing backups
Torn And Frayed - nothing
Sweet Black Angel - nothing
Loving Cup - Horns, steel drums
Happy - Horns
Turd On The Run - nothing
Ventilator Blues - Horns
Let It Loose - Horns, CHICKS
All Down The Line - Horns, CHICKS (it sounds like it anyway)
Stop Breaking Down - nothing
Shine A Light - CHICKS
Soul Survivor - CHICKS
So that's five songs that have backup female vocals. If backup female vocals ruin songs then that hardly ruins - not even half ruins, Exile.

I can easily live without too much sax.
