Did the female back up make exile horrible

In my opinion I think Mick shouldn't have put the female back up on some Exile tracks. I think without it would have been great.

I love the female backup. But who's singing--ala Keith style backup--on Dancing In The Light? Was wondering that... and Plundered has some other backup vocals...

Love the chick singers on Exile....gives it a real gospel and throwback feel.

They are part of the essence of the album. Such criticism is silly.

You mean the original album? there's not a note that should have been done differently. The backing vocals were soulful and gorgeous.

I agree .
It makes the Exile tracks sound false.

Mick is doing his own harmony on dancing in the light.
Original album - back-up vocals are awesome.
New songs - they're fine. Ya don't like 'em, don't listen to 'em.

He sounds very much like '72 Keith singing backup.

I reject the premise that Mick makes all artistic/creative decisions, and the rest of the band has no say...

Shine A Light or Tumbling Dice without the girls singing back up? No way.

What tracks could you be referring to? Tumbling Dice? Let It Loose? Two of the most revered tracks in the Stones catalog?

While we're at it, let's get rid of that horrible "female back up" on Gimme Shelter as well.

What nonsense.

Interesting, yeah, maybe a bit. Of course it is Mick if you give it a good listen. Besides, we know the words were written and recorded last year.

This thread must be a joke.

"Guy walks into a bar with 2 versions of Exile on Mainstreet under his arm, bartender says to him, he says, 'why you got two copies of that record under your arm', the guys says to him, he says, '...........insert punchline here......."

Let's see if we can complete the joke!

I always thought that Micks lead and Keith backing vocals destroyed Exile. Not to even mention the guitars - without them Exile would sound totally different. While I am at it, I would also argue that also Bills bass makes Exile horrible. Charlies drumming...my god, what a letdown. Nicky plink plink Hopkins - I would not let him anywhere near a rock and roll record. And the lyrics are not very convincing too. Theres also some awful sax on the record. And some cheap sounding percussion.

Thinking about it, Exile is only saved by the female backing vocals. And the cover.

even the cover is a little suspect. Black and White...how cliche!

Ever since they stopped including the postcards, they totally lost me.

that doesn't work...how about, "it's cuz I like to play both records at the same time on different turntables, because I hear it was recorded in mono, and I prefer stereo".

Now THAT, is a punchline....maybe not funny, but at least on topic!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The backup singers are purely sublime. And create The Stones ragged alter in their church of excess to fully appreciate the beauty in skating so close to death. Wonderful and holy.
