Gazza, (or anyone)
could you suggest some website to learn about
the 14,000 different leagues worldwide, and how
the players are divided up and who and why goes where?

I admit ignorance on all of this, and your comment weeks
ago about the differnce between league play and world cup
play really pushed me along .... now I wonder more about how all of this works.

There are a limited number of GREAT players world wide.
How do they decide where to play for money? I hear some
players signing for 30 million euro..and then I hear about
Ghana players only getting $20,000 for doing well in this World Cup.
That Renaldo guy makes milllions and millions, but how much do others make?

I have looked around, but it is a zoo of websites..and the info is
not really clear. I wonder how guys are picked for the best leagues,
and who is picked for the MLS thing here in the states. I assume
others view the MLS thing as a joke compared to the Primeire league,
but who decides who plays where and gets paid how much?

Then there are my questions about players taking off from the league football JOBS
to go play in the WC or the Europe Cup. How is all that planned out?
Do players on WC teams get money? or is it pride? ...what about the Europe Cup?
I heard some comments about how tired some players were from league play
and maybe it hurt their WC ability...all very intertwined and interesting

Does the winner of the Golden boot get money or is it just an honor.

I know that is a mouthful, that is why I asked about websites for all of this.

Gazza I really appreciate you answering the questions I have had, you helped
convert a non football person into someone who is now kind of fantical about WC football. Thank you again.

Please dont answer all at once. It might be best that maybe as you come
across some good info websites you might post a link here. I know it will take time to learn it all.

Not to answer my own question(part of it) but I just found this, interesting about the low MLS salary cap.
It is obviou$$ why kids in the USA have picked NOTfootball. We need to change that, at least for an "elite World Cup team".

MLS keeps its salaries low to remain viable. They acknowledge that soccer is a niche sport in the States that will only ever draw about 15,000-20,000 per game. They're not trying to go toe-to-toe with baseball, football, and basketball because that strategy would surely lead to financial ruin (see NHL).

MLS is trying to avoid repeating the mistakes of the North America Soccer League, which threw a lot of money at international superstars in the late '70s. That strategy worked for a while in the 1970's, but the league died quickly after Pele, Beckenbauer, Chinaglia, etc. retired.

It was a great match of both teams despite the big disappointment of their
semi-final defeats.
Strange that Uruguay as 4th had to move without any congratulations from the yard,
that´s really not neccessary.
To be honest, never paid that much attention to the "small final",but wasn´t aware
of such a ceremony.

In the World Cup, I remember the game between West Germany and Poland in 1974 (which was, to all intents and purposes a semi final) being delayed by around an hour because of a waterlogged pitch.

You´re right,Gazza, watched the game as a 9 year old on TV that day and remember very good that the
circumstances under which it had to be played because of the tight schedule were
regarded as irregular.

Hey shortfatfanny, just like you I watched that game as a 9 year old. One of the hardest for our German team - "die Wasserschlacht gegen Polen". In fact they were about to cancel the game completely, when at last minute one of the people in charge had the idea to use large rolls (Walzen) to clear up the green. So the game went ahead (still under horrible conditions).

Up to now the 1974 World Cup and our winning team there, have been my yardstick concerning the quality of our respective teams. But our recent team has surely changed that. Still I think our '72 dream team (which I only came to praise afterwords being too young in the first place) might be the strongest German team of all time. But it was only short lived and this new ensemble, being so young, surely still has some surprises in them.

But... it's the final...who knows. Both teams deserve to be there

Tension is running high in both countries! Holland - Barça eh Spain: who had thought of such a final? Even the wheather here is clammy and wet. Tonight we're going to dance with the Spanish Mr D and try to learn him a lesson!

No, that's no surprise, though the first round didn't promise that much for Spain and the game against Chile neither: Chile being the better team in the 2nd half, playing with only 10 players and almost coming back from a 2-0 disadvantage (but it lost by 2-1).

Anyway: Holland in the final is a surprise for me and it takes two to tango (with Spanish Mr D).

But now the past doesn't matter anymore at all: it's only the first match to come that counts. If we win this match I don't really care about our next matches for the next years!

I think the 1974 German side gets unfairly overlooked because of the way the Dutch team from that era gets romanticised. They were, however, an outstanding side and their track record says it all - 3rd in WC '70, European Chanpions in '72, World Cup winners in '74, European Championship runner up in '76.

Germany has produced many terrific sides, and that was the best of the lot. They were maybe slightly better in '72 than in '74, but it was still a great team, with several truly world class players. Gerd Muller was my footballing hero as a kid and he's still my favourite international player of all time.
