They just said if the Dutch win then all the people in the square in Amsterdam will jump into the canal. Must have been 150,000 people there.

Minute 21 - Van Bommel should be sent off
Wow! Hard to beat that ;-) You must have be mesmerised. I wish I could've seen them in '70 and '72 but being only 7 Years old in '72 I was still a little bit too young I guess. Oh, second half, have a nice evening by the fridge - Prost!Quote

Hey shortfatfanny, just like you I watched that game as a 9 year old. One of the hardest for our German team - "die Wasserschlacht gegen Polen". In fact they were about to cancel the game completely, when at last minute one of the people in charge had the idea to use large rolls (Walzen) to clear up the green. So the game went ahead (still under horrible conditions).
Up to now the 1974 World Cup and our winning team there, have been my yardstick concerning the quality of our respective teams. But our recent team has surely changed that. Still I think our '72 dream team (which I only came to praise afterwords being too young in the first place) might be the strongest German team of all time. But it was only short lived and this new ensemble, being so young, surely still has some surprises in them.
I think the 1974 German side gets unfairly overlooked because of the way the Dutch team from that era gets romanticised. They were, however, an outstanding side and their track record says it all - 3rd in WC '70, European Chanpions in '72, World Cup winners in '74, European Championship runner up in '76.
Germany has produced many terrific sides, and that was the best of the lot. They were maybe slightly better in '72 than in '74, but it was still a great team, with several truly world class players. Gerd Muller was my footballing hero as a kid and he's still my favourite international player of all time.
Agreed, Gazza, and Gert Müller - loved him too. Even his jersey number. Regarding his unbelievable instinct for scoring from each and every position, I think 13 was superbly fitting.
I saw that German team beat England at Wembley in 72 Gazza. And got to meet them all at their Hertfordshire hotel before the match. My dad took me along and they all signed a huge photo I had of them that I put on a big white background. Beckenbauer took me around after a training session, the day before, to meet everyone of the team.
