They just said if the Dutch win then all the people in the square in Amsterdam will jump into the canal. Must have been 150,000 people there.

Minute 10 - Van Maarwijk instruction, press spanish defense to feel unconfortable. That's what I missed from Germany last wenesday.

Neutral here, was hoping for a wide open match, similar to yesterday. So far so good with both teams having scoring opportunities.

Minute 20 - Ramos twice could open dutch goal. Van persie continue pressing Pique and Casillas should kick the ball to the midfield. Every time Van Bommel is in the play... and now yellow for Van Persie. Holland six faults in 15 minutes, 1 yellow card. First fault of Spain and yellow card. Howard Webb isn't the right referee in my opinion. Does anyone remember Eurocup 2008. A very bad referee. Perhaps english iorrians may tell us about him.

Minute 30 - I dislike Holland play. Very similar match with Brazil. Every time, in every ball, they go as victims. Spain is not doing its play. Now De Jong with a karate kick and only...yellow.....If referee show yellow card means he saw the fault and these faults are always RED. Poor Holland, poor football.
It's unpleasent the holland play destructing with faults and faults and faults,....

Rough play on both sides of the ball, whining/acting is not attractive.
This is being played as I expected, very rough and tough by two teams that want to win.

The resume at the end of first half, is that Holland is leading 12-7.... in faults.
Game is open

Tight game so far but the Dutch are taking their game to Spain. They are disrupting the Spanish attack with some rough play throwing the Spanish off their game. Great strategy.

Also, Spain likes to establish a "passing triangle" to hold possession of the ball but the Dutch have penetrated that triangle and have broken up many passing lanes for the Spanish. This is where Germany failed terribly.

The Dutch have started to get some good looks and seem to be cracking the Spanish wall. We'll see if they can brake thru in the second half.

I am not dissappointed, except that the score is 0-0,
I would rather it be Nederlands up by 3-0 goals.

I think it is pretty entertaining, I am not sure what people want to see,
but I am enjoying this match, it is what I expected. I am happy to see the
Nederlands is not sitting back like Germany did against Spain.

GET THAT BALLL NEDERLANDS !!! AND SCORE !!!!! ATTACK!!!!!

Hey shortfatfanny, just like you I watched that game as a 9 year old. One of the hardest for our German team - "die Wasserschlacht gegen Polen". In fact they were about to cancel the game completely, when at last minute one of the people in charge had the idea to use large rolls (Walzen) to clear up the green. So the game went ahead (still under horrible conditions).

Up to now the 1974 World Cup and our winning team there, have been my yardstick concerning the quality of our respective teams. But our recent team has surely changed that. Still I think our '72 dream team (which I only came to praise afterwords being too young in the first place) might be the strongest German team of all time. But it was only short lived and this new ensemble, being so young, surely still has some surprises in them.

I think the 1974 German side gets unfairly overlooked because of the way the Dutch team from that era gets romanticised. They were, however, an outstanding side and their track record says it all - 3rd in WC '70, European Chanpions in '72, World Cup winners in '74, European Championship runner up in '76.

Germany has produced many terrific sides, and that was the best of the lot. They were maybe slightly better in '72 than in '74, but it was still a great team, with several truly world class players. Gerd Muller was my footballing hero as a kid and he's still my favourite international player of all time.

Agreed, Gazza, and Gert Müller - loved him too. Even his jersey number. Regarding his unbelievable instinct for scoring from each and every position, I think 13 was superbly fitting.

I saw that German team beat England at Wembley in 72 Gazza. And got to meet them all at their Hertfordshire hotel before the match. My dad took me along and they all signed a huge photo I had of them that I put on a big white background. Beckenbauer took me around after a training session, the day before, to meet everyone of the team.
Wow! Hard to beat that ;-) You must have be mesmerised. I wish I could've seen them in '70 and '72 but being only 7 Years old in '72 I was still a little bit too young I guess. Oh, second half, have a nice evening by the fridge - Prost!
