Explain the difference, please. Limited to the interpretation of music.

Btw UrbanSteel's (and my) YT statistics have proven that the Stones are a men's fan band (more than 30.000 views, only 25% women, and take into account that it concerns only videos of the Jagger sex symbol era 1969-74).

This piano-based song should be supported by electric guitar(s), with at least a part from Mick Taylor of course (this song screams for his licks!) and furthermore Mick Jagger should have never used violins on this song! It's ugly as hell! These strings have nothing to add except creating a "wall of sound" (the negative meaning).

bullshit. the strings are great and fit perfectly.
guitars would have destroyed it.

Well, at least I like the first half. That's about when the strings comin' in ;-).
The strings sounds forced. It's not an Angie type of song. Angie is peaceful, it's just perfect, it works. Following is more of a Let It Loose type of song. That means no strings, but electric guitars.

I heard Following The River today on XM radio. I enjoyed it up until the strings kick in. Too much!!

Great song. After lots of spins I even like Jagger´s unusual vocal acrobatics in the second half of the song winking smiley

Leedslungs, good to hear it. I'm a couple turns down the road from you at the Dulles Corporate Center. We will have to put up our stones flags next time they come in town. Just recently I saw several Caps flags at the corner of Dranseville road and Sunrise Valley it made me think, "man when the stones come to town I'm putting out my Stones flag on my car and waving it proudly." Because as you know come 530 that light gets pretty filled up.

lol
yeah, like ignoring the red lights, swerving around the gates at the railroad crossing? or...
the dear in the headlights?
or the eel... strictly following the river....through the hydroelectric turbine of the dam?

Keith shoulda had some input on that song!

I think this song could be a great song live in a packed stadium on a (hopefully) upcoming tour.

Following the River is probably the finest song I have heard since I first heard Angie in the summer of 1973...Maybe Tom Trauberts blues with Tom Waits should be mentioned here also...

That's because Micks river is as sticky as syrup. Once you have your toe in you can't get out. Be cautioned!

Seriously, this is the most schizo song of the bonus disc. Nicky's tasteful, restrained piano part vs. Micks schmaltz and corny lyrics, the back up vocals, the strings on top of it... I just can't love this song.

Has any Stones song polarised opinion as much as this one?

It's either love or hate with not much inbetween

This reminds me of some fans back in the day who really didn't like the choir singing on YCAGWYW or the 2nd part of cyhmk..
For me i like it..It adds to the song...Its a great song plus the strings are kind of low in the mix so it doesn't over power the
song anyway...

Yeah, well, it does create an ugly (flat) wall of sound! It doesn't sound like any Stones recording (only Streets Of Love is the other ugly song). It's Jagger solo. He's the one who creates a flat wall of sound since Goddess. And it's not Stones-worthy.
