Casino Boogie - what on earth are the lyrics about?
Posted by: sjs12 ()

Surely this has come up before?

Somewhere I read that the lyrics are based on some cut and paste method. That would seem to be the only explanation for this. And what about the title?

Anyone?

No good, can't speak, wound up, no sleep.
Sky diver insider her, skip rope, stunt flyer.
Wounded lover, got no time on hand.
One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam.
Pause for bus'ness, hope you'll understand.
Judge and jury walk out hand in hand.
Dietrich movies, close up boogies,
Kissing c*nt in Cannes.

Grotesque music, million dollar sad.
Got no tactics, got no time on hand.
Left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle,
Sinking in the sand.
Fade out freedom, steaming heat on,
Watch that hat in black.
Finger twitching, got no time on hand.

Sounds like another drugged out day on the Cote D'Azure.

Thanks with sssoul.

I like the idea of Keith shooting at pages with a gun. Anyone know for sure what they did or where that story comes from?

Also, it would be interesting to know the original "source" for the cut-ups if that's what they used. Where do you get "kissing c*nt in Cannes from?

It's called stream of consciousness. Not all lyrics have to make linear sense or be "about" something. See "Bob Dylan".

One of my all-time favorite Stones tracks, by the way...

Well explained, Tele! The lyrics have nothing to do with drugs. Some people seem to think that Exile is a 'drugs and money' album. They're wrong imo. Btw: one of my favourites too, especially the last partwinking smiley

smile: i reckon it's easier when you're living about 10 miles from Cannes - like at Nellcote, for example :E
ahem - i mean: maybe there wasn't an outside source; maybe they wrote a bunch of phrases
then shot at them, threw them up in the air or whatever to establish an order.

(meanwhile in case anyone's interested, i noticed the link in that old thread is now defunct,
so i replaced it: [www.fact-index.com])

The 'Kissing kunt in Cannes' line has been debated a good bit before. I can't recall what it was directly but it's pretty funny, what people have thought it to be.

Actually, no I'm not sure they're right.

This is how I always heard it (though I'm really bad at interpreting lyrics - especially Mi9ck's and especially on Exile!)

No good, can't speak, wound up, no sleep.
Sky diver, insider, skip rope, stunt flyer.
Wounded lover, got no time on hand.

Fun-less soccer, thrill freak Uncle Sam.
Awful business, know you'll understand.
The Judge and jury walked out hand in hand.

Dietrich movies, close up boogies,
Kissing c*nt in Cannes.
Grotesque music, million dollar sad.
I got no tactics, got no time on hand.

Lips who shove her, tried to muff her,
Sinking in the Seine.
Fade out freedom, staying in here,
What's that hat in black.
Fainted got picture, got no time on hand.

What do you hear? There's quite a few lines where, listening back, I just can't make it out...

Yes, those are the same lyrics that I posted up on my earlier post. However, I don't think that these (or indeed the ones I posted just now) are 100% correct. I'm hoping we can come to a consensus.

I always thought it was a response to 'Like A Rolling Stone' and an overall tribute to Bob Dylan, in that the lyrics make no sense, the focus is more on the words, and the singing is more folk and free spirited, w/ that ever slight touch of Stones.

I guess if you pick it apart. "No good, can't speak..." Heroine high, often too stoned to speak. "wound up, can't sleep..." Keith is a vampire, and just doesn't sleep a lot, likes to party late and create. "Sky diver, inside her, skip rope, stunt flyer..." the joys of groupie sex, kinky, and full on. "wounded lover, got no time on hand..." Jilted love, groupies again, and perhaps the wives. "One last cycle, thrill freak Uncle Sam..' touring the states during Vietnam, protests, and Altimont. "Deitrich moves, close up boogies, kissing cvnt in Cannes..." Speaks for itself. That is the jet set party, rich gypsies who are cultured. "Grotesque music, million doller sad, got no tactics got no time on hand..." A lot of shit music making big money, and probably a jibe at Allen Klein. "left shoe shuffle, right shoe muffle, sinking in the sand. Fade out freedom, steaming heat on, watch that hat in black..." More sordid business, loss of freedom when the big money rolls in, shifty business deals, and coorporate hacks that plunder their art...
All imo of course.

I adore this song. Always saw it is a lyrical collage. Kinda hazy impressions against a decidely non-hazy dirty unapologetic ultra-groove backdrop.

I know it was many years prior to the writing of this, but I always thought "judge and jury walked out hand in hand" was referring to the verdict of the drug bust -- judge and jury were in cahoots from the beginning; there was no way they were going to get a fair trial.

And you know what? I never knew it was "kissing cu nt in Cannes"! But my first thought was how Anita and Brian flew to Cannes together in Apr 1967 because Mord Und Totschalg, which they'd both worked on/in, had been nominated, but she ended up being with Keith when he arrived by car. Perhaps the trip was particularly memorable for him winking smiley

btw sjs12...I like your band, The Family! coincidentally, The Family Band from Brooklyn is my favorite altho less-hard-rocking find of 2010 thus far.

Wow! I can't believe that you hear "steaming heat on" whereas to me it clearly says "staying in here"!

It also clearly says "the judge and jury walked out..."

And I still hear "know you'll understand" quite clearly. And I've just re-listened to it carefully about a dozen times.

Apart from those 3 lines I don't really have strong views either way. The vocals are so muffled it is very hard to make out and you can't even interpolate due to the rather random nature of the song.

Re: Casino Boogie - what on earth are the lyrics about?

Someone before mentioned Dylan and I can see a similarity in that the song is so vague, so open for conjecture that it could mean 100 different things to 100 different people...much like Dylan's best work. There aren't too many other examples of this in the Stones canon....in fact right now I can't think of any others. Even the lyrics to Gomper have a cohesiveness...stoned, yes, but still cohesive.

"Dietrich movies, close up boogies
kissing kunt in Cannes"

I don't hear this nor do I think Jagger would be so crass - at least at that time. I think he sings "Kissing cut in cans". It is a reference to film making ie, to make a film cut, film canister, etc which is why there is a reference to Dietrich in the line before

Folks, as was posted above just go to their official website. It shows the lyric as "kissing cvnt in cannes"! Of course he would be so crass, as he was in Rocks off, "when she cums..." and "plug in fresh out of fvck and fight and feed" The kissing line in Casino is reference to their life in France and his jet setting and hob knob -ing with the social elite and getting laid at Cannes.

Hmmm...isn't that the website that everyone says rips them off? Unless Jagger reviews the lyrics that are posted on that site I can't see it being anymore credible than what anyone else hears. My ears certainly don't hear the words shown above. Isn't the pronunciation for Cannes and cans different for an Englishman?
