Don't Stop is simply too fast. Therefore, it has this kind of "lightweight" Country Rock feeling. If they would play it slower they could emphasize the chord riffs that are very Stonesish. A great thing would be to speed it up (haven't done something like that since Midnight Rambler?!) and end it as that country rocker that we know.

Kind of a filler song but oddly effective live, with Mick on guitar.

Gee - whizz, what a bunch of whiners. had to check if I accidentally joined the Bon Jovi forum^^

Don't Stop has some great sounding twang-guitars around a strong pumping open G riff.
Ronnie plays unique and loveable solo lines around the riff, while Keith pokes & stabbs in, out and around it. How can that be generic?
Mick, Charlie and Darryl keep it on the pumping level.
It's a great little song and I can see where the enjoyment of playing it live comes from.

It's really not much of a song, but this is a good description that highlights the not-so-bad aspect of it. Personally i am okay with the song, don't love or hate it. I just don't understand why some people get so damn passionate in their hatred of it.

I thought it slightly uninspired on first listen but it's grown on me a lot.

Very simple song but like the repeated solo and the WoodyCam was great fun.

Turd On The Run and Tantekäthe, your comments were spot on. This is rote, boring, tired, clichéd, generic, pedestrian, lifeless, Jagger-by-the-numbers pop-rock (masquerading as the Stones). It's depressing to see a band you love so much crank something like this out, when you know they could do so much better. If your creative juices are so sapped that you can only generate 4 new songs to support a major world tour, at least make one of those songs worth listening to.

An instant simple and efficient Stones song. Were it written 2 decades before, could have been a banner.

Some people are very passionate in their hatred of Mick Jagger. They just hate everything he does. Don't Stop is Mick'song, so they diss it right away

Great song in the sense that it just makes me feel so damn good every time I hear it. Love the live version of it from Four Flicks MSG. I love happy songs, 'Happy' comes to mind.

It must have made a huge impact, ha ha, because timeonourside.com mentions it once for '02.

This song is just the Stones shouting that THEY don't stop after 40 years on the road. smoking smiley

Listening to it right now (Live from Stockholm Stadium 2003). Worked great live in a stadium. A bit lightweight as far as songwriting goes, though.

Why so many Track Talks all of a sudden? Is there nothing else to talk about?

It's my fault. Recently I had a little free time on my hands and decided to start giving my two cents on a few Track Talks. I enjoyed doing it so much (thanks René!!) that I decided to go through all of them.

Don't worry, I'm almost done ... just have the "F's and G's" left (they're only up to "Gomper" so far). grinning smiley

Well, it's a great idea that Rene got off the ground and well worth reading. What's been the most entertaining so far?

Whenever i hear it, it reminds me of the summer of 2003
and some very good shows.

I can't believe such a wimpy, throw away Stones cut has 4 pages of serious comments. I had 40 Licks in the car the other day. Beast of Burden ended and then this piece of tripe came on. I laughed at how lazy and out of touch the Stones sound. Some 'magic', Keith. All they had to do was come up with 4 decent songs. Five years out of the studio and this is it? I fast forwarded to Happy.

The main thing is what the band think of this song and after playing it at nearly every Forty Licks show it seems to have been dropped never to come back

It's clear to me that this song was written by Mick to Keith, in a plea to get him to continue with the band.

to wit, the lyrics:

Well, you bit my lip and drew first blood and warmed my cold, cold heart
And you wrote your name right on my back, boy, your nails were sharp

(the early songs that Keith wrote with Mick's help, Satisfaction in particular, will be forever identified with mick jagger. keith put his stamp on mick and nick's career in particular, mick will always be known as half of the "jagger/richards" songwriting team - "you wrote your name right on my back".)

Don't stop, honey, don't stop
Don't stop, beg ya, don't stop

Well, I love your screams of passion in the long hot summer night
But you pepper me with poison darts and twisted in your knife

A fairly obvious reference to Keith's guitar ringing out in tours "screams of passion int he long hot summer night", typically in the summer, while at the same time Keith's acerbic criticism of Mick in the press "you pepper me with poison darts")

But, don't stop, honey, don't stop
Don't stop, beg ya, don't stop

Well, the only thing I ask of you is to hand me back some pride
Don't you dump me on some dusty street and hang me out to dry

He doesn't want Keith to let the Stones end, he wants him to keep going on the road so that Mick is able to do that which gives him his pride and ego satisfaction - perform the Jagger/richards songs for millions. Mick sees being left to pursue a solo career as being dumped "out on some dusty street"

Don't stop, honey, don't stop
Beg ya, don't stop, baby, don't stop, honey

Well, I'm losing you, I know your heart is miles away
There's a whisper there, where once there was a storm
And all that's left is that image that I'll filed away
And some memories have tattered as they've torn

"i'm losing you" - Keith clearly became less and less interested in the Stones, and began pursuing projects like acting in Pirates of the Caribbean, being a family man, even working on his autobiography. "your heart is miles away" - they live on different continents. "There's a whisper there, where once there was a storm" - the passion clearly has left the songwriting partnership, and indeed Keith's productivity as a songwriter declined significantly. "all that's left is that image that I'll filed away And some memories have tattered as they've torn" - Mick misses the days of the late 60s and 70s when the Stones, keith, and jagger/richards are in top form. the use of the word "torn" is a clear reference back to "torn and frayed."

Don't stop, don't stop
Beg ya, don't stop, honey, baby, don't stop, honey, honey
Don't stop, baby, don't stop
Beg ya, don't stop, come on honey, don't stop, play on, baby
Don't stop, baby, baby, don't stop
Honey, don't stop, don't ya stop
I know I got ya some picture that I filed away
Honey, don't stop, I beg ya, don't you stop

Clearly it worked, for Keith has indeed continued!

I remember when this came out, and my older brother - who pretty much schooled me on classic Stones when I was really young- laughed out loud in disgust when he heard this.
Yeah it was bad, but a nice memory from the Licks tour was Ronnie and the guitar neck-camera- thing-a-ma-jiggy up on the secreen when this was played.
Haven't heard it since then, and have no plans too any time soon... thumbs down

This version of "Don't Stop" Moving is by far the more powerful POP and Dance song.

Very similar title, better result.

Exactly!

To Her Coy Mistress is a Lover's Plea:

Now let us sport us while we may,
And now, like amorous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour
Than languish in his slow-chapped power.
Let us roll all our strength and all
Our sweetness up into one ball,
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

(gonna walk, before we make him run)

By comparison, Don't Stop is a traffic sign.

Turner, it's from Andrew Marvell's To His Coy Mistress--textbook lover's plea (literally).
