I would also read the editorials contained in the reprints of California music critic Greg Shaw’s “Who Put the Bomp” newsletter(and then, magazine). He understood that American and British youth loved songs with a beat, and a “signature riff”. “Satisfaction” is based on a great original lick. The challenge for Mick and Keith was to think of a lyrical/rhythmical balance that, while adding a contem

I don’t know your first language, but if you know Dutch, then I would definitely recommend the opening chapters of Ger Tillekens’ thesis-turned- book “Het Geluid van de Beatles”. He’s a Dutch sociologist, bi-lingual, who studies sixties youth culture and Beatles music. In all my years of music study ( Stones included, of course), I’ve never come across an author like Dr. Tillekens. Years ago I us

If Stones do San Jose,we want to have a pre-show meeting, and perhaps you want to go a little faraway, the “Creek Eatery”, spacious, overlooking a stream and wooded area in the Evergreen, San Jose, next to the Country Club. The perfect place. You are only a couple of minutes by car from the main freeway to downtown and the shuttle. But, if you want the “Poor House”, well, they’re both fine.

If you’re coming to the SF Bay Area and want to meet before the show, wherever it is, let me know. If they play Levi’s, then that’s close to where I work. I will ask for the day off. You are right. There are no bars near Levi’s. However, the shuttle/transit authority will take you to the outside of downtown San Jose, And the “Poor House”, next to the transit area, would be the best. A great pub,

Thanks so much for bringing up this long overdue topic. I have a blues musician friend who saw Taj w/ Jesse Ed open for Zeppelin in January 1969 at Fillmore West. He said Jesse played his Tele in standard tuning for the entire set. Most guitarists would have changed to an open-tuned guitar w/higher action for slide, but my friend said Jesse didn’t. Jesse’s playing left him speechless. My friend e

Best audios of Van : Fillmore East 1970 ( Bill Graham mixing board) and, quite possibly the ultimate, KSAN-FM live fro Pacific High Recording Studios 1971. Van’s interpretation of Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman” you will find yourself playing over and over. As Greil Marcus writes, Van “owns” it.

June 10th I was at the annual Haight-Ashbury street fair. The main stage at Haight and Stanyon is right across from Amoeba Records (where I was, waiting for the Jackson Saints to appear)...when I noticed that the backwards-capped, tattooed, skateboard-carting, hoodie-wearing, skin-pierced crowd had somehow managed to stumble in, despite their being constantly glued to their cell-phones. A few words regarding the Beatles sounding “off-key”: the second Ed Sullivan Show, Philadelphia ‘64 and both Paris ‘65 shows they were tuned a half step low, probably so Paul could hit the high notes. Also, John wold sometimes play a chord voicing different than on the record. Tokyo ‘66, for example: on the single “Day Tripper” the E minor to E minor 7 is played ( under George’s signature lick) a

I recall a "Lost Lennon Tapes" episode in which the engineer for the last album was interviewed, and he related how John would bring almost finished songs in to the studio, play them, and then Yoko (who is classically trained) would suggest a chord that conformed with the sequence John was playing. Anyone who is familiar with the Beatles knack of inserting a non-diatonic chord in a prog

Chris Walters' backstage photos from Amsterdam October 9, 1970 show two Dan Armstrongs: one leaning on a wall with a single coil (probably RT,"Rock Treble") capo'd at the fourth fret (for JJF and ROB, the first two songs in every '70 set). Keith is tuning another DA, but it's difficult to tell whether it's the one with the higher output, "humbucker" st
