The volume levels are an interesting thing. Different records sound "right" at different levels...and that's always a bit of a factor when comparing any recordings. You still liking some of the things that Electrola cut does ?

QuoteMathijs QuoteRobertJohnson QuoteMuddyw Now let's hope it is mixed decent, like the Mocambo Live, and it won't sound anything like Live Licks or Four Flicks. There is something off on those. Yes, El Mocambo is mixed decent, but actually it deserves a brilliant mixing like Side 3 of Love You Live. It's a mystery to me why they didn't use the mixing template from the 70s.

Wouldn't know where to begin choosing any of them. Don't know how you guys do it. I could probably wheedle out a couple of tracks on each album that I was a little less fond of ...but I must have about five favourites on almost every album.

Couldn't have been the Flat transfer in 06...not without time travel Interesting that Miles Showell didn't choose the flat transfers for all the albums in the 71-16 Abbey Road box...just for "most of them". He evidently had quite a few sources to choose from for each album and went with the one he thought would work best for each individual cut. edited to add.

I've never had much interest in this timings stuff, but are most differences due to how quickly the track is faded out ? Now that's something that has often frustrated me. Tracks faded out with the band still in full glorious flow , leaving us to wish that they'd let us hear a little more.

Quoteemotionalbarbecue Thanks for the reference. In matters of taste, opinions vary widely. However, some may think that image it portrays of Keith is not exactly seductive or attractive. Quite the opposite, in fact. I suspect Keith would love it and find it very funny. He seems very happy in his skin these days... and certainly not precious about his appearance or age.

I can't even remember when I bought the German Electrola pressing but early 80s would be about right I think. ] Was able to pick up an Elektrola copy at a record fair today and am really liking it so far. As you said, it's a bit more polite than the Artisan and it lacks a bit punch and in-your-faceness bit it has a

It's not murky, and the sound is great...but it's not a very accessible mix it takes decent playback kit to really unravel it..and I think that's what folks are often alluding to when they call it "murky".

QuoteMelBelli QuoteNashvilleBlues QuoteMelBelli Man. I wish I could travel back in time and show Chris and Rich, at the peak of their anti-establishment arrogance, their future aging selves performing a song by Hootie and the Blowfish on Country Music Television. Maybe it would’ve humbled them. Wonder what the late 60s/early 70s Stones would think if they saw themselves touring in 2022? I

Nothing could match the original Decca pressings. ....and they were round and flat, with the hole the middle. This alone would be an achievement for modern vinyl. But I do quite like those red label Teldec pressings when I'm in the mood. They can sound a wee bit sterile but they're well pressed and quiet, with a slightly reserved but clear and detailed sound. But getti

I'm still loving HD. If being picky I'd prefer it a bit drier and less "produced" ...but you can seldom have everything.

You might find the Electrola a bit "polite" too ...but the top end is really sweet and the drums have great weight. [ I've probably got more copies of Exile than any other album...I could paper a wall with the post cards ! ]

QuoteNellcote1971 That's good to know that the new one sounds better, I've only heard the Abbey Rd one and immediately sold it. Will check out Miles' one, need a pristine copy to entertain guests anyway I suspect, though I'm not certain, that the Half Speed mastered Exile now on the shelves in record shops is the one from the boxed set . I'd guess that the current s

QuoteNellcote1971 Quotedjgab what about the half speed mastering ? I didn't find much difference to the 2010 remaster but maybe that's just me. With vinyl, how much difference you'll hear depends a lot on the playback equipment. On a basic cheap turntable, there are so many losses and so much additive electromechanical distortion that you won't notice much difference b

QuoteStonedRambler QuoteSpud Fingers crossed that whoever engineers the release remembers that this is a guitar band. You'd be forgiven for thinking that some of the "modern era" vaults releases were "The Chuck Leavell & Daryll Jones Band" This concert (not the whole show though) was already streamed by the BBC. Yes, the mix is guitar heavy, a bit high on Ronnie

QuoteNellcote1971 Yes a lot of people rave about the flat transfer (haven't heard it YET). What I don't get... I've read numerous posts (here and at the Hoffman forum) that indicate that the original master was lost and that famously Bob Ludwig had to purchase a mint Monarch copy for his 1994 mastering (source: Don Was) but I've found nothing about the resurfacing of that m

First generation copies of the theoriginal master tape can also be great sources...and, as often not, were used to master vinyl back in the day. I'm happy to be corrected but I think it was likely an early generation copy which was used for the 2011 flat digital transfer.

The German "Electrola" release sounds like it may be a remaster..it certainly has a sound of it's own. The best modern vinyl I suspect is the Miles Showell master from the 2011 flat transfer, for the boxed set . I guess that one is also used for the post box half speed master release, which I haven't heard

These songs are just the other side of Keith. I was always struck by something he said when being interviewed about Talk is Cheap when it came out. When asked why he hadn't made a solo record before then, one of his reasons was that it might not have been what folks expected to hear from him. As it turned out. much of TIC was the expected Keith...but much wasn't. Keith
