HD sounds quite good on vinyl in terms of the the mastering and sound . I think this is kind of by accident though It's quite a long record for a single LP but, thankfully , universal didn't put it out as a two disc album as is too often the trend with modern vinyl. This has resulted in them not being able cut it too loud and it retains a reasonably natural dynamics. It is

I don't think you can beat the original vinyl...but I do enjoy the Giles Martin reworking more than I expected to. It unsettlingly puts the emphasis on on different instrumental tracks here and there... but it's a good alternative listen.

QuoteMathijs There really isn’t anything that can beat tubes heating up during a gig, making you twice as loud after half an hour. But it’s just a glorious noise. Mathijs ...Which just about sums up the Rolling Stones I can get acceptably close to Keith's latter day live sound with my modest Blues Deluxe Reissue ... ..but I've never had an amp that can really approach

I think modelling has reached the point of sounding very convincing...but it still doesn't feel quite right when you are the player. I've always found that plugging a good guitar into a good simple tube amp is almost like playing an acoustic in terms of the sound responding to your fingers. The more processing of any kind you put on the middle, the less direct that feel.

That's why I once asked you if you knew how Keith's bucker loaded Teles were wired. The neck bucker with standard 250K Tele pots is too dark to be really useful on it's own...but it does pair with the bridge pup for a beautifully filled out but airy tone in the mixed position.

Quite so...and when we build our own "Micawber" or "Malcolm" inspired copies...the instinct to do a neater job is very hard to resist I can never bodge it on purpose

QuoteMathijs [... Even Ted Newman Jones, Keith's guitar tech throughout the 1970's, was an amateur at best who did quite a lot of botched up work on Keith's guitars. I can understand a thinner neck profile and a bigsby would make the guitar have tuning issues, but you normally fix that by cutting the nut properly and introducing some pencil graphite. Roller bridges and nuts did

See..that's where my "filing system" doesn't stress you out . All Brinsley Schwarz has to do is settle down somewhere in that end of the third shelf where the Pub Rock lives, along with Graham Parker et al.

Many SGs are neck heavy, especially with Grover type tuners, but a Bigsby sometimes helps the balance a bit. Never heard of fitting a beefier truss rod to address that whiplash long neck issue. Is that something you've come across before Mathijs ?

QuoteIrix QuoteSpud Streaming and downloading provision is a complete mess... especially for those of us who want real HiFi . But that's not true in this simplicity. For instance: TIDAL, Apple Music and Amazon Music have lossless HiRes streaming and also Dolby Atmos. Qobuz has lossless HiRes streaming/download (plus downloads in DSD). In North America, there're HDtracks and ProSt

All of the above is why I haven't taken to online music consumption. If only you could routinely download and save all the music you want to buy in the best available quality and fidelity . Streaming and downloading provision is a complete mess... especially for those of us who want real HiFi .

Wonderful thread ! Soul is part of their DNA in the same way that the Blues is. Maybe not to quite the same degree...but if those Soul influences hadn't been there, a lot of their work may have sounded quite different.

QuoteBig Al QuoteIrix QuoteDoxa it sounds like there is not that big urge to make a follow up to HACKNEY DIAMONDS Another question would be: do they currently have enough song ideas (top-tier, no filler) for the missing 25-33% of the next album? Of course. Also, the ‘completed songs’: how good are they? After all, they were overlooked for Hackney Diamonds. I know the B-side is a dead h

The Stones always improve Motown for me. I don't listen to much original Motown. Stax is another matter. they cover Stax very well too ...but it's usually gutsy enough already. I've always liked and listened to original Stax.

QuoteLuxuryStones Quotekleermaker QuoteDandelionPowderman I'm kleerly aware of the latter. Maybe you have a little problem with the fact that only the two Micks play on this one as RS members and not your idol Keith, and that the younger Mick also plays great bass here, besides fantastic guitar. Common guys, relax. The Stones can sound like the Stones, even without 3 original members. Ta

When it comes to vinyl, my main field of experience, I find the ABKCO DSD remasters to be uniformly very good. For all the post Decca stuff ...with so many cooks seasoning the broth down many years, it's a complete lottery. Some OK, some not so good and some bloody appalling ! As for B&B ...yes It's great sounding record but, for my tastes, it's just a little too clea

QuoteMathijs The magic to Ron Wood for me is that his guitar playing sounds so simple but when you want to copy it, it turns out to be much more complicated. His playing in 1975, 1978 and 1981 is actually much more technically advanced, much faster and much more intricate than you think on first listen. And Wood has taste -he always plays the right part to a track, especially when they play soul

It's a pointless discussion in many ways because most of we can know very little about what Keith is like in his everyday life. But, from what we do see and hear these days, after decades of global superstardom and, errm, a "very interesting" life ...he does come over as a pretty well balanced and "normal" guy. Still a bit of a "gobshite" on occasion
