Is Start Me Up a truly great song ? It's a great example of what many folks want and expect the Stones to sound like. But is that the same thing ?

Well, yes . IORR is the one "in need of attention" from a sound quality point of view. I think we discussed it's shortcomings in a thread not so long ago.

It will be welcome . But it was a great sounding record to start with... ...so the bar is set quite high for anybody looking to improve it with a remaster.

QuoteBig Al [] Because it’s anthemic and was released during a period when the Stones had a reasonable chance of having a hit, regardless of how ‘good’ it is. You've maybe answered your own question Al To what degree it's the quality of their subsequent work, and how much it's just a function of the changing times we can't really know.

In the context of the market both then and since...the bigger mystery is perhaps why SMU was a hit ?

It's arguable that the Stones have been a completely different band in what we might term the "modern era"... ...but I'm not bothered cos I love both these bands .

Keith, when fit and agile, was a better mover than Mick ! ...but sometimes put it before playing his guitar ...which is great on film...but not always on record .

QuoteMadMax I can't believe they haven't sorted this one out for the DVD market as well, it's a bloody scandal! I live for these vault releases but certainly ain't gonna splash out on a BR player as I have 1000's of DVD's with the lads Treat yourself to a BR player at Black Friday prices [...and that's advice from a complete Luddite !]

QuoteDoxa ...And if they now want to release something that has already entered Public Domain, say, a 1972 concert, they just make a fancy release of it, with a cool booklet and whatever, promote it big time, collect the money from die-hards who naturally will buy it loyally, and that's it. Mission accomplished. ... - Doxa That seems to have been the tactic employed for some time now.

The bit about Rock being a vehicle for rebellious youth is certainly a pertinent point. That rebellious youth has long grown up to consist of us, posting borderline reactionary nonsense on forums like this So "Rock" is now "grandad music" and is no longer any use as a platform for today's rebellious youth. ...and that's partly why other things are now d

We'll all recall much talk around here in those days about both Keith and Ronnie being more interested in looning around and throwing shapes than in playing the bloody guitar. That said...Keith did cut one badass piratical figure. A "Rock Star" written large we might say.

It's academic in a sense... At this Stage in the Stones career, and with many of we fans nearly as old as they are ... If anybody wants to make any money out of the remaining stuff in the vaults... ...they need to get on with it

An album like Exile is never going to be widely loved or popular amongst a wider music audience. It's too hard to "get" ... Heck, a lot of Stones fans have found it hard to get... ..but when you do "get it"...you get it big time.

QuoteStoneage Most people tend to hang on to the music that was modern or trendy when they were in their most formative years, say between 10-20. Of course you move on from that, more or less, but it's still the base for your popular music taste. In a way it's the same with fashion or technology - it's constantly on the move. Young people today aren't formed by rock music, som
