Hey VJ. Nice to see you surface here. I always wanted to learn more about those '71 shows and thought RG did a nice job with his book, especially the way he portrayed it as the last time the Stones toured without a mega entourage and were peaking as a band, heading off to Nellcote for the Summer. That's one tour I would like to set the Wayback machine for. BTW - I just posted on t

Being from the Philly area, it was no problem seeing all 3 AC shows in 1989. The set lists were similar with a few songs rotated and the order at the middle and end shuffled a bit, usually to accommodate the guests or Keith's set. However the 3 shows were very different in vibe. First night was probably the worst Stones show I have ever seen live and this includes nearly 100 shows from M

I saw Stu (or Stew?) roll many times back in the day. In Syracuse 1981 (Thanksgiving weekend), I was hanging out in the Stones hotel on the afternoon of the second show. I wandered into the lobby giftshop/news stand, and there was Stu flipping through the girly mags all by himself. I waited a few moments deciding what I would say to him, then complimented his piano work on 20 Flight Rock and

Madison Square Garden July 25th 1972 Second Show. Tickets in 5th row obtained via lottery $6.50 each. I was 18. I've now seen them nearly 100 times. HBK

Go back and check out the piano on "Who's Driving your Plane?" That's certainly a lost gem of Stu's since it is such a rarity to most folks. Also, the live Down the Road Apiece and 20 Flight Rock from the 1981 are pretty darn good with Stu high in the mix HBK

I was at both Hampton concerts. The second one was identical in set list but the band was less intense and pretty much going through the motions. Lots of goofing around like tossing around and wearing a Santa Claus hat during the show. The end of tour party was the night before (I snuck in - covered in a different thread and Bill German's book as the Keith's birthday cake story) and t

Gotta go with the guitar solos in Ya-Yas Sympathy. That's where I first perfected my dueling air guitar chops.

Most of us know the Lou and Alice connection. Growing up in mid-60s Michigan, I recall he was a member of the Beatles wannabee band the Bossmen who played clubs and high school gyms (including ours) all over the Saginaw/Flint/Detroit region. They morphed into Terry Knight and the Pack which morphed into Grand Funk Railroad while Dick went off to form Dick Wagner and the Frost. Bossmen with s

Thanks for making we go back to this number. Once you know the meaning of 999, the lyrics start to make some sense. It's a classic Keith riff-groove. It growls. But is it a song? Great live with the Winos.

999 refers to a stamp of purity for bulk heroin. No doubt this what Keith was referring to. HouseBoyKnows because he has a PhD in pharmacology When the white crystals of pure heroin HCl are dry, the powder is compressed into bricks in a hydraulic heroin press. These machine-compressed bricks, often bear a “999” logo impression on one side. Mainland Southeast Asian heroin bricks are not adu

I was there for both shows with a contingent of Philly area friends. They really were great shows. Molly Hatchet was the opener. The sound was fantastic if you were within the first third of the floor from the stage, but anything further out was subject to the horrible cavernous stadium echo. It was a real party weekend during the Thanksgiving break. Driving back to Philly after the second

Backing vocals (and horns during bithch) were audible at the show but no one else was one stage. It may be the first use of the hidden extra musicians concept. HBK

When I first saw the title of this thread, I was expecting some sort of listing and discussion. I would like to add that strange middle rapping bit in Anybody Seen My Baby to the list of worst overdubs; not just poor studio craft but a truly sucky drop-in that adds nothing to the track. HBK

Thanks for making this point, BV. Casual Stones fans who attended US shows with me were expecting an aging band with the typical crowd-pleasing setlist. They went home totally impressed with the quality of the performance and the new energy brought to the somewhat standard setlist, not to mention the return of Mick T. It was not unlike the reaction that people had after seeing Glastonbury.

Mvc played a rather low key show tonight focusng on ballads and slower numbers. Mostly solo on keys with bass and backup vocals from the Bump Band bassist on several songs. Lots of stories and interacting with the audience, many hoping for a guest appearance. He said the Stones are in Connecticut, which I found hard to imagine with a show here tomorrow (maybe Keith was there at home). Over by

Excellent band. Have all their records, even the early ones. But I don't get the chick bass player. She's just not up to the others in musicianship. About 4 years ago they ended one of the live shows I saw with a long drawn out Moonlight Mile, building to a beautiful crescendo. That completely validated them on my favorite list forever. HBK

Around and Around in Newark. Surely not the best performance of the tour, but it was one hell of an emotional high point for me. A truly iconic song for most long time fans. After 90+ shows since 72, I finally got to experience it live (from the pit. I snuck in that night with a wristband from the Brooklyn show). HBK

In 81 the early outdoor shows had no video. The Carrier Dome shows in Syracuse had video and used the big outdoor stage, but the video did not come on until about the 5th song in the set (like the shows in December 2012). That's probably what happend elsewhere like Seattle. The arena shows never had any video. HBK

1972 MSG second show 5th row. LOUD !! My ears rang for 3 days. 40 years and hundreds of rock concerts later and it's still one of the loudest I ever heard. The mix seemed ok but it was so thunderous with head-slicing guitars that any nuance was buried. I loved it. HBK

Thank you Mickschix. Putting it down in words is also a labor of love and I'm so glad, like you, that I've kept a diary of sorts. I'm also the author of the "Where the Boys All Go" story about Hampton '81 in the Love You Live book. I think my next excellent adventure story will be about the Amsterdam Paradiso shows in 1995. HBK

Great Philly 78 story. I was there too and don't think it was as bad as the critics would make it sound. It was a difficult environment for sure, and when the Stones played a seemingly short set, heavy with new songs, some people felt ripped-off. But any tough-minded die-hard Stones fan was happy to be there and the excitement and crush of the crowd was all part of the experience. When t
