Philly 78 was the only East Coast stadium show of that tour that the average fan could get into. The other shows were small theaters and were impossible to get into without some connections and luck (or lots of money for scalpers). I was there too. The concert was notoriously viewed as a bad performance. Mick was sick and the set list was short and heavy with Some Girls tunes at a time when

Madison Square Garden July 25, 1972 - 2nd show 5th row. 90 shows (and counting) since then, including Newark 2012. I actually watched the Stones on the Dean Martin show in 1964 but had to wait until '72 when I was old enough to go to a live gig. Parents didn't take their kids to Stones shows in those days. HBK

I'm with some wasted dudes passing out in my college dorm room right now and need to blast some Stones to get things kick started.

I like the Stones slot, right in the middle. They'll grab this crowd by the short and curlies, right when they're ready to be rocked by the best.

I have just arrived from Philly and am psyched. My last show was Atlantic City 2006. Any predictions on show time? It's not like we have to worry about a curfew. 8:30 maybe?

Thanks to the Stones of course but you gotta love Bjornulf for bringing us together. I first met him during BtoB in 1997 and the Internet was finally linking all of us. Before that I thought I was the biggest Stones fan in the world but I have been humbled by BV and many others. I've enjoyed the live experience 88 times in clubs and stadiums every tour from MSG 72 to Paradiso 95 and am

Why is this OT? Andy was married to Claudine Longet before they split and she shot Spyder Sabitch and only went to jail for a week or so. Accidents will happen . . . . The rest is Stones history. Woo hoo! HBK

Never got any photos with Keith that night, but maybe I should photograph the piece of cake for posterity. Hey, maybe I'll use the image for the CD tray liner for my new Hampton download CD. HBK (always a lurker, rarely a poster)

Bump I thought this might be worth re-posting with all the current interest. Bill German immortalized the birthday cake story in his excellent book. And yes I still have the cake, now 30+ years old. One of these days I'll get around to scanning and posting my photos of the 19th. We all got the video of the 18th. HBK

I turned 18 the summer of 1971 (same year as the Alice Cooper song), fresh out of high school in Northern New Jersey. Being young and adventurous, I spent 8 weeks with a buddy back-packing through Europe With stops in all the major capitols. Amsterdam was the center of the Euro-hippie universe. Jim Morrison died while we were in Paris. The next big thing in London was T-Rex with "Bang a G

QuoteDandelionPowderman Thanks a lot for sharing, HouseBoyKnows! <They finish with Jumping Jack Flash, starting with the extended guitar intro used on the studio recording.> Ha ha, they did! Must be the only time they've did it I know they have done versions of JJF in recent years where Keith starts with some variation of the extended studio intro before kicking into the main

QuoteSohoe Actually HTW was a live staple in 81-82 Must have been a brain freeze . . .middle age you know. Should have done a fact check. How can I forget seeing Mick and Tina duet at the Meadowlands shows in '81. Good thing I decided to keep a diary for the Steel Wheels tour. HBK

I don't want to start a warhorses complaint discussion here, but as I continue to reminisce about the Stones return to touring in 89 and look at the Toad's setlist, consider the perspective from that period. They had not performed Bitch since the Taylor era and IORR since the mid-70s. So that was exciting. One big rarity, Rooster. Two brand new songs from Steel Wheels. SMU was not yet

QuoteBeast QuoteGoldsmith That's a great story but I thought this quote was a little curious: QuoteHouseBoyKnows I was also quite annoyed at the many local college kids who did not deserve to be there. HBK Why did they not deserve to be there? I think he's talking about the feeling you get when you know diehards are outside gagging to be inside and there are people inside who ar

I know this is a long posting but I hope that the details of my personal experience are worthwhile for anyone interested in this event in Stones history. To some Stones historians, this date marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the "modern" Rolling Stones era of live performance; expanded musical spectacles filling huge stadium and arenas around the world. However, the dre

One take of Steve Earle's Dead Flowers is on a Live BBC disc released in the US just this year but recorded many years ago in England with the Dukes as his backup band. It's a slower tempo and sneaks up on you, building to an amazing crescendo of guitars and junkie angst. HBK

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Steve Earle and the Supersuckers version of Before They Make Me Run. That comes very close to out-rocking the original and puts the guitars in your face more than any Stones or Winos live version I have ever heard. I demo my stereo with it sometimes. It's on a rare EP CD. HBK

I followed all the 60's rockbands about equally until YaYas hit. Then I was converted completely with the Stones at the top of the pile for good. Just before YaYas I probably would have put the Doors on top with Morrison Hotel their most recent on my turntable the most. HBK

Thanks a bunch Urban. The second MSG show on the July 25th was my very first Stones concert. I was in the 5th row and got those seats via the mail in lottery. Face value on ticket was $6.50. Probably still ranks as the best Stones I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of shows since then. Other high ranking shows are Hampton 81 and Paradiso 95. HBK

The extended version of She Was Hot that leaked out when Undercover was released is quite nice. Not a real album track and I still have not heard a version without the Philly DJ overdub or a drop out in its place.

QuoteBritney Awesome show. Wonder how the december 19th show went after the momentum of this show. Britney - I was at both Hampton shows which have been highlights of my Stones concert going career ever since. The second show on the 19th was just as good but not quite as special. Band was more loose, goofing around on stage like Woody wearing a Santa hat for a few songs. Same set list. Some s

Cadillac Records is the new film about the start of Chess Records and the early careers of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Etta James, Chuck Berry. In it they tried to recreate the moment when the Stones went to Chess in Chicago in 1964. You can google to find the trailer or try this link here. About 1/3 through they briefly show the Stones meet Muddy scene. It's obvious which one is supposed

Dexy's were highly under appreciated and sort of screwed themselves by having a pop hit with Come on Eileen. Then of course Kevin Rowland rejected the pop star image and did nothing much worth mention ever since. BUT. . . . . the remastered Young Soul Rebels reminds us of their great potential and sounds f-ing awesome on a top line HiFi rig turned up to 11. I've also been re-discov

Keith ultimately dies of natural causes after a long life and is naturally sent to hell. He walks into a room with a complete recording studio set up with musicians tuning up. They invite Keith to pick up a vintage Fender and join in. Keith realizes that the band includes Jimi Hendrix on guitar, John Lennon on keyboards, John Entwhistle on bass and Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin sharing vocal d
