Just caught this on a music site. Don't know if this has appeared here before. It's an interesting little read and cueing up the Temptations "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" might be appropos background music while reading it.

Here's some more of Miss Holiday. Y'all can check out her singing Strange Fruit on your own. (Dylan owes a lot to this version on his latest album) Though there's many wonderful female singers out there that can do Holiday type stuff, I'd have to say the late Nina Simone is the only one who came close to capturing what Holiday did in her prime. Check ou

Found this link on a Dylan site. A fun read considering the Stones and the Beatles are the only lasting really popular groups from the British Invasion era, though a number of them still tour. Anyone else have something similar regarding the critical reviews of the band when the Stones first stormed the ramparts of popular culture? I remember the "Would You Let You Daughter Marry a Rolling S

"Badass for Badass I would take John, George & Ringo over the whole gang of Stones" What, no Paulie? I tend to agree with the comment. Brian Epstein worked like hell to get the Beatles to clean up their act. It helped them become who they became.

Y'all gotta remember, the Stones were posed as bad boys as opposed to The Beatles back in the day. The Stones image was to look scruffy, unwashed, more basic than the Beatles. The Stones made good press and helped to sell many a newspaper and music mag back then. I remember the Hollywood Palace show where Dean Martin brought on the Stones, Dino rolling his eyes and mocking the band. It wa

Don't know if this popped up earlier in this thread, but from this morning's New York Times re the Stones tour: "Zip Code is the first Stones tour of American stadiums since 'A Bigger Bang Tour' in 2007. This time they promise to play the hits as well as 'special gems from their extraordinary catalog' a tour announcement said. There will be video screens, spe

Oh my. My comment regarding a hologram of BJ was said with tongue in cheek. I would hope the Stones won't do anything like that. I do think for this tour the Stones will do the s-o-s they've gotten away with for years and think it's still hip to invite younger performers to do a number or two with them. I think it would be much cooler for the Stones to invite some of the remaining

If you want Ry for Sister Morphine, why not ask Marianne to join in also? In an offbeat thought, I kinda like the idea I just had of the Stones doing some old songs, Lady Jane-Ruby Tuesday-Paint It Black-I Am Waiting, etc., and projecting a hologram of Brian Jones onto the stage while they perform them. It'd be a helluva effect taking the band back to its roots while using modern technol

Came across this on a Dylan site. I know it probably showed up here at some time, but, here it is again. The book that accompanied this documentary is pretty good, though, I would guess it's now out of print. Enjoy.

Re M & K trying, the sacred fires have burned out, IMHO, regarding meaningful and memorable new Stones songs. They aren't the first and certainly not the last team of songwriters this has happened to and will happen to. The Rolling Stones, band wise, are a corporate juggernaut and the bottom line is what matters. The Stones and their shows are product. So, if you can keep spinning the sa

Love the stairwell echo...natural reverb. Not the eye candy of the original post, but here's another cover of Sister Morphone posted on the same Utoob page as the young lady above. Not crazy about the vocals, though they're good, but the music is better. Let the cover below play and wait a moment. Marianne's version comes on next.

Irma Thomas may have recorded at Muscle Shoals, but she originally started in New Orleans if my memory is correct. She's considered one of the top performers to have come out of N'awlins. Allen Toussaint wrote and produced songs for her. Here's a taste of Irma. (The Stones may be familiar with this one) And a nice cover of the above: And to my ears, Otis

I copped the topic subject from the link below. The Stones and Andrew Loog Oldham are noted in the article. The songs used are something else. Did we really listen to this stuff back in the day? I do know that summer 1965 was when the theme song for my life - Satisfaction - blasted out over the radio airwaves. 65 was also the year I discovered Dylan through the Bringing It All Back Home album. An

Wow! That's one helluva an investment. I looked at reviews for the NWZ ZX1 and they're great, but the price...wow. Think I'll stick with my Walkman NWZ-E475 for awhile longer. Interestingly, I've always found the Walkman digital music players to be better soundwise than iPods. Apple isn't the end all and be all of sound. If you want a good set of headphones to use with yo

Just caught this on a Dylan site. Interesting read. Prowl through the clips on utoob for some nice tastes of her performing through the years. She could play that guitar just like ringin' a bell. Now we know where Chuck copped part of his style. A touch of the blues with her. This should be, IMHO, the way the Stones do their tours for now on - nuttin but the basics.

Re Dylan's comments on these albums, part of what he said was that Johnny Cash was "fierce, really fierce at one time in his music" and if you wanted to hear the real Johnny Cash you needed to go back to his early years before Nashville, god and country (meaning the U-S-ofA) infected/influenced Cash. Oddly enough, after it was cancelled, Cash himself said the one thing that really

Wow. I have an intact copy of the unauthorized biography pictured above packed away with a bunch of other Stones books, t-shirts and memorabilia from over the years. I guess they're all now collector items. The unauthorized biography is cool in that the sheet music, for want of a better term, at the back of it allows you to play Stones songs without knowing anything about open chords, certai
