I like the Ya-Yas cover because it is a direct reference to a line in Bob Dylan's "Visions Of Johanna" - "jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule".

I was at the first Pontiac show. This would be the performance where Iggy wore pants. The sound was brutal and Iggy was not well received. There were sporadic boos in between songs by the middle of his set. Iggy ventured out onto the main stage but was never lit when he went there. The idea was clearly that he and his band were to stay in one spot and only Mick J was allowed to explore the stage.

I always liked the Brussels Affair version - by that I mean the one from the early show. Love how it starts right as Rip This Joint ends but I suspect that is an edit and did not actually happen that way at the show.

QuoteRollingFreak His later albums are truly excellent. Starting with New York of course, but Set The Twilight Reeling and Ecstasy are fantastic records as well. He left us too early, but he certainly went out with a bang on his last run of solo albums. I've always said those were his best albums since the 70s. I would argue that Lou's late career consistency begins with The Blue Mask

QuoteLeonioid I am somewhat curious about this whole Buffalo situation. The only stop with no Lucky Dip tickets offered and now the the reports of better sales than anywhere else. Good for the city to suport the Stones so well. When the Stones last played Orchard Park NY (which is where the stadium actually is - it is not within the city limits of Buffalo) in 1997, the lower house was sold but

The philosophy behind the pricing is to get the maximum for the band as possible. The argument about ticket pricing is that with lower prices, tickets fall into the hands of scalpers (touts) and they mark the tickets up anyway. Rather sell tickets at a higher price and drop the price to stimulate more sales. The Lucky Dip tickets are there to blunt criticism for the high prices in the first place

I am not sure about respect but throughout their career I believe the Stones have a special place in the hearts of rock n roll fans in the U.S. That no one else holds part of this is the fact that the Stones paid tribute to American roots music in a way no other band did. Sure The Beatles mined some of the same sources but they covered hits like Chuck Berry and Motown. The Stones went deeper and

I am not sure that the Stones are very good at understanding the chronology of their own history. Mick J in particular. They would be probably better off if they hired someone off this board with an obsessive knowledge of the Stones to go in and listen to the vault material and categorize it. The one thing about the Exile deluxe version is that other than the Keith vocal version of what became So

Quote71Tele For my money his signature is still his simple and graceful solo on Maggie May. It's perfection and he's never topped it. Agreed and I am struck by how great those early Rod Stewart albums are, Every Picture Tells A Story in particular. Critic Jimmy Guterman made it top of his list of the 100 Best Rock And Roll Records Of All Time. Exile was second. Maggie May is a great s

Ronnie Wood is a good guitar player but probably will never be considered a great one by most rock n roll enthusiasts with the possible exception of his slide playing. However, he does have a long history. His concurrent contributions to The Faces and Rod Stewart's solo albums were considerable. He also has the most interesting solo career of all of the Stones IMHO.

In the immortal words of Chet Flippo "I would rather see the Rolling Stones on a bad night than Bruce Springsteen on a good night" in reply to someone who suggested the Stones were not comparing well to Bruce in 1978 when they were touring in support of Some Girls. In fairness to Bruce, 1978 was one of his best years as a touring act and he did five FM simulcasts on that tour and most o

Quote71Tele I agree that Keith was quite good in '81. This was the last completely pre-Vegas tour, before the post-Restoration Concordat that gave us basically the formula we still have today. They were also promoting good contemporary hit product (Tattoo You) which they haven't done in - how long? In a way, I don't consider the Stones after Bill's leaving "legitimate&quo

As luck would have it, I listened to this last week as I have been playing my old pre-recorded cassettes and I never bothered to get this on CD. It's fun to listen to because you can't go wrong with Nicky Hopkins playing piano. Interesting to note that Nicky through in a bit of "The Loveliest Night Of The Year" in Seattle on June 4, 1972. Probably the best thing about the albu

"You ever listened to an Eagles record? Their songs are good and all that but every note is totally predictable" Bob Dylan July 7, 1984 Pretty well sums up my views of The Eagles - the Steven Spielbergs of rock 'n' roll. They are good at what they do and everyone has an Eagles song they like but their records are products, not works of art. Can't say that they didn

QuoteThe Mez Dylan is my favorite artist. I really like Shadows of the Night. Of course his mid 60's albums are iconic, but I really listen most to "ModBob", Cowboy-bluesy Bob of the past 20 years. Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times, Tell Tale Signs, Together Through Life, Tempest and now Shadows Of The Night (throw in World Gone Wrong too). I can never be sat

If I was to pick a version from 1981 it would be the Hampton PPV version but I must support the general idea in this thread that the SW version was hugely impactful. I saw that tour on its second stop in Toronto and the excitement when those chords were first hit was palpable. In those pre Internet days, I doubt I knew that was going to be the opening number, reports from Philadelphia in the pres

I believe if there will be any more Stones show Mick Taylor will continue to be there. For Taylor, I am sure the fee he gets for participating is substantial enough to keep his head above water financially. Taylor has said he realised how much he enjoyed playing with the Stones when he returned. Let's face it. Taylor, a truly great guitar player, never sounded as good as he does with the Sto

Country music that gets played on the radio is pretty dire these days but that trend has been going on since the 1980s. There was a backlash against it in the 1980s to 1990s with the New Traditionalist movement and the Alt Country movement. Both of those movements produced some great music. Keith understands country music much better than Mick though I must admit "Evening Gown" is a gre

Quotedcba Quotestewedandkeefed Jann Wenner raved about the July 11th show in Rolling Stone at the time. I think he raved about the first show of the L.A. residency (July 9) : like in NYC the rock royalty was invited to the opening night... and the band really delivered. No I believe Jann Wenner wrote a review titled L.A. Friday Night from which the title slipped into common Stones patois whe

Stereo mix greatly improved my perception of this show be it the 11th or 12th. Jann Wenner raved about the July 11th show in Rolling Stone at the time.
