Jazz musician Horace Silver died this week. I would not count myself as a jazz expert by any stretch of the imagination but I always found his music to be universally brilliant. So many great albums and he seemed to make the sort of music that even people who don't normally go for jazz can enjoy. Andy

Picked up a couple of original Folkways releases recently (have been looking for the Mark Spoelstra for a long time. The Far East Family Band - Cave Down To the earth LP is a reissue of a very nice Japanese prog release - I can highly recommend this one.

When you are quite young you do make some real buying mistakes. As a teenager I bought a secondhand copy of Vanilla Fudge - The Beat Goes On. wtf was that all about? - shocking album. Andy

Ed Kuepper is someone people on this board should really check out. Not that well known but he has made some fantastic albums (Electrical Storm, Rooms of the Magnificent, Honey Steels Gold, Character Assassination etc). Saw him play solo in a Finsbury Park pub back in the late 1980's. Andy

I find that the older I get (now in my mid-fifties) the further I am distanced from the current rock scene. I still find new music that excites me but then am totally shocked to discover that it is at least 10 years old. Recently "discovered" Victoria Williams, Golden Smog, Uncle Tupelo, Trotsky Icepick, Jayhawks, Butthole Surfers. andy

PR disaster in my opinion. The vast majority of the Glastonbury crowd don't go to see a particular artist, they are there for the event as a whole. Mick is deluded if he thinks he is going to play to a crowd of Stones fans. I'm sure they will put on a good show and the crowd will love it. His attitude only fuels all of the Stones bashers - too old, should have quit years ago, only inter

So was Mick T the "special guest" just for this show and does it mean that for the next few shows he will be relegated to Rambler and Satisfaction again. I hope not but i have a sneaking feeling that this may have been a one-off and they will revert back to the "what the @#$%& have they got to do with the Stones" guests. Interesting and well balanced review from Dean Goodma

Thanks. I did get the details of those 2 tracks by using some detective work of my own (lyric search etc) but it took me quite a while. All of the tracks are fairly obscure on this LP (no Yes, Zep, CSNY etc). I will persevere and get there in the end. Thanks for the app idea. andy

I was given a white label promo album recently. It is an Atlantic Records promo sampler for radio stations. The labels say Atlantic Sampler Rock and Atlantic Sampler Blues (no sleeve and nothing else). I have identified the first two tracks as - Jonathan Edwards - Sunshine Cactus - Evil (Is Going On) I guess that this is from around 1971 or so. Anyone know anything about this album, pe

I have a James Last album "Voodoo Party" and also think that "Lexicon of Love" by ABC is one of the greatest albums of the 1980's. andy

Intrumentally pretty good but they need a new singer. Heresy perhaps but Ozzy just doesn't have the powerful intense vocals anymore to make this song really work. Andy

One of my favourite Dylan periods. So much intensity in those live performances and a lot of friction with the audience in those 1979 shows which seemed to spur him on despite some of the boos and catcalls. Also like listening to his onstage "sermons" - has he ever spoken so much to an audience before or since. Only one negative for me - "Man Gave Names To All The Animals"

I must dig out a copy of the Johnny Winter And Live album. The first one of his that i ever bought back in about 1974. Anyone remember the double album with only 3 sides of music on it? Another great one is the Progressive Blues Experiment album - some fantastic guitar playing on blues standards. andy

Hopefully the "new" material will have some original compositions and perhaps quite a few "traditional" songs. Never really liked a lot of those contemporary covers that appeared on Self Portrait and Dylan. A full Isle of Wght soundboard would be nice as well. Andy

Some great choices here and a lot of albums i have never listened to so thanks for the suggestions I will def check some of those out. Always thought that Grace Slick could have made a killer album in her JA days. Manhole is OK but not her best songwriting. Her Sunfighter album with Paul Kantner is pretty good but as for purely solo albums then Dreams is my favourite although a more radio frie

Piper is my favourite PF album. Experimental and innovative but at the same time it has accessible and catchy tunes on it. I guess that is the secret of a great album. These days anything that was released in the 1965-69 period and features some phasing, backwards guitar, odd sound effects and drug references gets labelled as psychedelic. Truly psychedelic albums are not that common and probably

I went to my local record fair on Sunday. Always manage to find something to buy but then again having such wide musical tastes really helps. If there is one near you then go along, bargains to be had I am sure. I came away with - Vinyl Bowie - Station To Station - Low Man - Golden Hour of Man (basically their 1st album and most of the 2nd) Julian Cope - Saint Julian Tangerine Dr

A really interesting documentary and the 3 programmes on earlier in the week were quite good too. If you did not see them they were hosted by Danny Baker with 3 guests who discussed Rock, Pop and R&B vinyl favourites. The pop programme was the weakest to me (Sisters of Mercy - pop?). Each programme had a Bakers' dozen (13) albums on their wall of fame. Not necessarily the greatest albums

Always beeen a big fan, especially the earlier classic Mothers of Invention lineup. My favouite era is probably the 1974 lineup with George Duke, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Ruth Underwood, Fowlers etc. The great thing about Zappa bootlegs is that you get material that is often a one-off, not available elesewhere or a completetely different re-working of a classic song, lots of unusual covers etc.

Life On The Line is a brilliant album - although they were rooted in R&B they were not afraid to experiment with their sound and it works really well on that LP. Their guitarist was top drawer. andy

Florence for me. I though that she brought out the best in Mick. Lady Gaga is all about image (with some talent I agree) but it is all about "look at me, i'm so kooky" with her. Andy
