I didn't say I don't like it. I listen to the second CD sometimes (first rules), I just wasn't sure if I really need 4GB set of several shows with almost one setlist instead for, eg, one show winking smiley Now the first part is downloaded and I still wait for some free time to listen to it.

hey, why do I have to justify my thoughts on this - did I say something wrong?

Rolling Stones
Soldier Field
Chicago, IL, USA
July 8, 1978

Probably uncirculated low generation audience recording.

TDK SA 90 Tapes of otherwise unknown lineage > Nakamichi DR1 (azimuth adjusted) > SoundblasterPro > Soundforge 9 (WAVE 44,1 khz, 16Bit) > FLAC Frontend level 8 aligned on sector boundaries (FLAC)

.md5 and .ffp files created with Trader's Little Helper

Disc One:

01 - Intro/Let It Rock
02 - All Down The Line
03 - Honky Tonk Women
04 - Star Star
05 - When The Whip Comes Down
06 - Lies
07 - Miss You
08 - Beast Of Burden (fades out)

Disc Two:

01 - (Just My) Imagination
02 - Shattered
03 - Respectable
04 - Faraway Eyes
05 - Love In Vain
06 - Tumbling Dice
07 - Happy
08 - Brown Sugar
09 - Jumpin' Jack Flash
10 - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction

I've received these tapes around 1981 in a trade from an Illinois located woman. She told me (I kept the letter) that she's got the recording from a friend of the taper, so I assume it could be a 2nd generation. There's a bit hiss, but the recording sounds pretty good for its age.

Artwork is included as always - sound samples under comments.

Notes:

To fully appreciate what it was like to tape this show, put on several layers of clothes, including a winter coat, heavy gloves, and ski cap. Put disc 1 into a portable CD player and stand in a meat locker set to 30 degrees, and bring along several high-powered fans that blow 25-mile-per-hour gusts into your face. Periodically spray yourself with freezing water. Stand motionless and silent for two hours.

This was absolutely the most brutal taping experience I've ever had.

A flunky in the Stones' management company is probably unemployed now because of this show. Although the band had banked on an Indian summer night, they were instead greeted with record cold, freezing rain and gusty winds. Keith and Ron both looked like they were fighting back tears for most of the show, and remained huddled by the drum kit (and heat lamps) for the last half-hour. I've never seen anything like this by the Stones or anyone else -- one could tell that although they were extremely appreciative of the 35,000 or so fans who turned out, this show took a toll on them that they weren't ready for. Band members kept disappearing and returning with bulky winter-wear; by the encore, they were dressed for sledding.

Despite the obvious struggle, the show was pretty good, if a little rough. Mick was animated and worked the catwalks constantly to pump up the crowd; Keith's two songs were great (he sang "You Got The Silver" like a hobo clutching an overcoat around him with one hand and puffing a cigarette with the other), and the world premiere of "She Was Hot" was worth braving the elements for.

Not one of their best shows, but pretty good considering the conditions. At the end of the show, the band members congratulated each other like they'd just run a marathon. They definitely earned their paycheck on this night.

The recording is very good when the wind wasn't blowing. I was 2 rows up in the mezzanine even with the sixth row, and in a prime taping spot (under normal conditions). The fidelity of the recording is really solid and the vocals are up-front -- the one problem (most obvious during the first couple of songs) is phasing from the overhead speakers getting blown around by the wind. It's not terribly intrusive, but you'll notice it. The crowd isn't too overpowering on the recording, which I was pleased by. (One benefit of cold weather is that it's hard to clap loudly when you're wearing ski gloves.)

Considering the crazy setlist on the first disc and the effort they put into the performance, this is an enjoyable recording -- when played at room temperature.

This is the first time I've circulated this show, and the first time I'm aware of that any version has been posted to a torrent site. Hope you enjoy it.
