The above timings are song timings, not CD track timings.

Background:
Some years ago i received a box of master reels to transfer, all recorded in the S.F. area
in 1969 and 1970, and including a variety of artists. I think most of these are in
circulation, how widely i don't know. They were all recorded by the same taper, and these
were the original reels.

This is a the companion recording of the Oakland Stones show that goes with the opening
acts for that show already uploaded:

I have no idea how many different sources are circulating for this show in addition to that
used on the classic vinyl bootleg. This recording has the start of "Live with Me" missing
due to the tape side change; perhaps this is the easiest way to distinguish it. I feel
certain that this has made it into the trading pool already, but i don't see it on the tracker
and it was requested, so here it is.

Hey, this is a new source of the legendary Live'r show with a flawless JJF and with the always missing beginning of UMT !!! Instead the beginning of LWM is missing but combining the 2 sources we finally have the complete show!!!

And the poster also gave most us most of the opening acts! Isn't it amazing to see this pop up after 41 years... I still have high hopes for the "lost" 69-73 shows (e.g. Detroit'72)

I have combined both sources in 2 ways, makes 2 nice CDs now:

a) old source (which is slightly better, from VGP-276), JJF & UMT patched with parts from the new source

b) new source (which is slightly worse), LWM patched with a part from the old source

It's on HC now.

The Faces
Fillmore West
San Francisco, CA
probably one of four shows 07-10 May 1970
G audience recording

Lineage: audience master > wav > flac

Mastering: None except indexing of tracks.

Track listing:

Disc 1 (60:09)

01. Intro
02. You're My Girl 4:18
03. Flying 4:27
04. Wicked Messenger 4:10
05. Evil 6:48
06. Devotion 5:31
07. Pineapple and the Monkey 4:43
08. Shake, Shudder, Shiver 3:10
09. Maybe I'm Amazed 4:43
10. Around the Plynth 8:11 [cut at 5:03]
11. It's All Over Now 6:28

Quality:
This is a clear recording, but the vocals are low in the mix, so they are hard to
hear when the instruments get loud. There is a cut at about 5:03 into "Around the
Plynth" where the tape flip occurs.

Venue/date:
I don't have a firm date for this. The Faces played the Fillmore West on 07-10 May 1970
and again on 28 October. I think their first LP as "The Faces" came out in March, and
Stewart's solo LP came out in June (September in the UK). All of the songs in this show
are from those two LPs except for "Maybe I'm Amazed". That song had appeared in April on
a McCartney LP, and The Faces covered it on their second LP in March 1971.

There appears to be firm documentation for the two shows on 28 October, and the setlists
don't match this tape. But it's conceivable that they had these songs under their belts
by the May shows. One useful webpage on Ron Wood gives a setlist from one of the May shows:

That doesn't match this tape, but it contains the same two songs from Stewart's solo LP
and "Amazed" as well. So it would seem that this tape is one of the other three shows
from the 07-10 May 1970 run.

It's interesting to note that before the last song, Stewart introduces "It's All Over
Now" as a song "off my new album." It seems strange that he would say this of an LP
not yet released, but the release in the US was only a month away so maybe not so strange.

ok, recently a double CDR from the Japanese Dasuye has been issued, titled THE COMPLETE LIVER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE.
I still have top get it but it is supposed to include a very good audio of the Oakland 9, 1st show, including the Bill Graham intro about the delay due to unavailability of cars.
It seems also the second show is the best sound ever.
If anybody has it, please comment and evectually post it.

The Tarantura was indeed not very impressive. I prefer the tape with it's flaws in comparison with that release.

It seems that Tarantura is very good at botchering their tapes at the Mastering stage : they add loudness (which thickens the sound but makes the music horrible and metallic to listen to at high volume) & they reEQ like mad.

For a retail price of 14000 Yen one could expect better results, right?

Notes:
JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70's and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 3 captures the Rolling Stones on the opening night of their 1972 tour in support of their Exile On Main Street album. This recording was done on Dave's dads combo radio/tape recorder with Donn and Dave taking turns holding the mics and working the cassette deck. This an excellent recording but a little heavy on the bass. This copy is from Dave's reels, the masters may or may not still exist. It is possible Donn may still have them but they couldn't be located at this time (Sept. 2010). There were a lot firsts at this show this was the first time Rocks Off, Tumbling Dice, Happy, Torn And Frayed, Sweet Virginia, Ventilator Blues, All Down The Line and Rip This Joint were played in a live setting. This show is the only night of the tour that Torn And Frayed along with Ventilator Blues were played. Honky Tonk Women was also dropped from the set after this show to only show up at select shows as an encore. This is a great a high energy show if a little rough around the edges due to it being the opening night of the tour. The recording has been mastered for sonic enhancement.

Chuck Berry w/Johnnie Johnson
January 23rd 1997
The Elvis Room @ Blueberry Hill
Saint Louis MO

Aiwa Stereo Mic>Sony D-6
Aud master casssette>SonyTC-K760>Edirol 09HR> 24/96>Cool Edit Pro>TLH>FLAC

Perhaps my favorite Chuck show...i used to get to see him regularly when i lived next to BBH. This was early on in what has turned into quite the tradition at BBH (I think this was the fourth show in the initial run held in the Elvis Room> first being Oct '96).

Longest show I've ever seen him do (2 Sets???!) with Johnnie to boot. He always seemed to play better when he had Johnnie Johnson by his side...
Remarkable setlist (Havana Moon, South of the Border, At Last, even an attempt at Cottage for Sale)....and as always an appreciative hometown crowd...though at times you have to wonder why they just don't shut the f@#k up and listen to Chuck and Johnnie do their thing....
