CS Blues - How many versions?
Posted by: liddas ()
Date: September 16, 2008 13:44

Was listening to this the other day. If you pretend for a moment not to follow the lyrics, I think that this could be one of Jagger's best blues singing.

Anyway, how many versions of the song exist.

I have 3, one (I believe the one supposed to be released) with the arpeggiated chords, another one (labelled "Version 1") with more ballsy guitar playing and a third one, recorded at the 78 rehearsals.

Are there any more?

Well, I haven't heard this '78 version.

Not a fan to be honest.

I have 2 versions - the solo Jagger one with just him on guitar and the full band one..... is that '78? It has no info with it so I have no idea where that one's from....

I believe Keith plays acoustic on the acoustic guitar/vocal version, you hear Mick say 'play the chord' before he starts singing, no need for him to say that if he's the one playing guitar huh!?

That's all I've got. I used to think that the electric version was from circa 1978 until I read differently...so is there REALLY 3 versions???

That all I have too, Sleepy City. But I do know the electric 78 version is from the rehearsals for the 78 tour. It can be found on VG 4 cd set and (in better quality in my opinion) on the abridged 2 cd Turd on The Run release "Pearls At Swine". I'm sure they never seriously considered doing it live but wouldnt that have blown alot of minds on the Some Girls Tour?!!!!!!!!!!!

I also have two versions. The so-called "long version" I just lerve to bits.

The same rehearsal sessions that produced the electric CS Blues also has a hilarious punk Tell Me and a meth-frenzied sounding version of Gimme Shelter! It nearly screws itself into the ground!

I have to check, but I have several boots with maybe 3 different versions overall.

The 78 rehearsals version, the regular well-known version and maybe another one.

I have a very cute cut-to-shape CD single I bought sometimes in the 90ies.
I remember having about 3 or 4 songs on it, but one may just be an "unofficial" edited version.
Here's a pic of it :

In the book "The Rolling Stones Album"(Giuliano) pp 144 it says(along with pics of the box set) "Commencing in 1980,the Rolling Stones issued their first limited edition box set in the UK comprosing their first eight studio albums. Thereafter, box sets of old decca LPs were issued in Germany(The rolling Stones Story),France and Italy. In one of the German editions(THe Best Of The Rest),the Naughty "@#$%& Blues" was included but quickly withdrawn.
Maybe this is where the "legit edit" version of the acoustic take is from? Just speculating.

You may be right scottkeef
I'll do my best to check, but we have friends at home these days, so I won't be able to do so tonight.
Was CSBlues available on bootlegs before this German release ???

I dont know ,Doc. I believe CS blues was available on vinyl long before cds were the norm but maybe someone else here(Rockman?) might enlighten us. Seems like it might have been on an old vinyl release "Gravestones" or possibly "Rape Of The Vaults"? I'm just not sure.

I do have a Westwood One Rarities cd that has one called "hard version" but is different from the 78 version. These are all "officially" released rarities such as b-sides and remixes. Could this be a version that was released through the fan club or something like that?

CS Blues was available here in Europe on a bootleg single with a blue label, flip side was Brown Sugar with Eric Clapton;
then there was also a 12 inch maxi single with fake Rolling Stones label, same musical content

The best I nearly forgot!

There was also a 10 inch bootleg with a retro looking cover and label;
here we got Andrew's Blues on the other side

hmm, makes some sense, but "play the chord" is a kind of strange instruction in any case, isn't it? What else would he play? I don't know, but the whole incident has always struck me as pure jagger.

Perhaps Mick requested the key/chord as he sings accapella at the start.

There are only 2 versisons: The original from 1970 and the 1978 tour rehearsal version. If someone has more versions they are unofficial remixes of these 2 versions or something like that.

>> Perhaps Mick requested the key/chord as he sings accapella at the start. <<

that makes excellent sense, HM - on the other hand, there's a charming 1978 or 79 hotel-room version
of Key to the Highway that apparently features Keith on all instruments and the vocal,
and it starts with him sternly instructing himself: "don't mess it up!"

(i've always understood it to be Keith on guitar on CS Blues, though)

ps: how's your labyrinth, HM?

That's for sure! That version is dirty as ever!

By the way, the only info I have of these sessions is

Bearsville Studios May 1978
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wod, Charlie Watts and
Sugar Blue & Ian Stewart

That cannot be Ian Stewart playing on the organ of CS, minor chords are involved ...

Dont forget Bill Wyman plays the bass on all these Bearsville rehearsals(he blows a speaker on his amp cabinet during one session!)

I don't get 'Play the chord' out of what Mick says @ the start. I've blown it up & to be frank I don't have a clue as to what it is. Here it is, just one second long

"Pay it forward", aimed at Decca executives.
