I think the essence of the stones was captured as far back as the 1963 IBC demos.

I think you are quite right with the Flash from Ya Ya's, stone-relisc, but I would add that the real essence is generally in their live performances. It is sometimes better, sometimes worse, but nothing can beat the excitement of hearing and seeing them in action.
