heavy aloholics first have to get their body clean and therefore they need medical help. with alcohol you cant just stop, that can be very dangerous.
besides the phisical sympthoms of an addiction there's the bigger part of "mental-addiction" this takes months or even years. alot of psychotherapy and stuff. those 1- week rehabs are actualy a bit of a joke. you can get your body clean, but the main part of the addiction is not gone....anyway, all the best to ronnie

I've personally never understood alcoholism. I mean I like to drink as much as the next guy but I can hang out with people who are drinking and have a soda, I can have just a couple drinks, or if the mood is right go all night. It's never effected my job or personal life, at least not that I'm aware of. Am I an alcoholic? I'm sure those who make their living counseling would say so. I have too seen those such as Ronnie who get on the train and can't for the life of them get off. I can't understand it though. Very scary indeed.
Good luck Ronnie we all (well most) wish you the best!

But its patological, its within the body,
has nuthin or at least very little to do with social behaviour.
Person A could drink daily for 20 years and not become a alcoholic,
while Mr or Ms B gets stuck after the, say, second half pint.
Lost my best friend 2½ years ago to King Alcohol.
For me it killed the joy of drinkin'.
