Thank you for the news update, Adrian-L!
The choice of albums to be remastered however seems very arbitrary to me, but hey, who am I to complain! The last time they remastered some albums the result was really good!
I think no other album has benefited as much from the remastering as Street Legal which is a really good sounding album nowadays.

Street Legal was indeed a huge improvement, but it had actually been remastered a few years before the SA-CD reissues

UPDATE:

All Along The Watchtower Forum
Mississippi (version 1 - 1st song on disc 1) will be available for download as MP3 from bobdylan.com on 22nd of September. This is an acoustic version with the band.

More details and track times. This is taken from ISIS magazine, which published the press releases with track times from Sony. Additional and sometimes contradictory comments come from a 2nd source:

DISC ONE

1. Mississippi (6.04) - acoustic & band...."two guitars"
2. Most Of The Time (3.46) - guitar & harmonica (demo?) - "NEW"
3. Dignity (2.09) - Piano demo (is this the same as the 'Chronicles' sampler? Can someone check the timing?)
4. Someday Baby (5.56) - Slower version
5. Red River Shore (7.36)
6. Tell O' Bill (5.36) - minor key
7. Born In Time (4.10) - "close to circulating version"
8. Can't Wait (5.45)
9. Everything Is Broken (3.27) - more bluesy than album version
10. Dreamin' Of You (6.23)
11. Huck's Tune (4.09)
12. Marchin' To The City (6.36) - one version of this song has a gospel blues sound..."lyrical similarities to 'Til I Fell In Love With You"
13. Highwater (6.40) - live 23rd August 2003

DISC TWO

1. Mississippi (6.24) - rockier than version #1, possibly later take .."more full blown than #1"
2. 32-20 Blues (4.22) - Word Gone Wrong outtake
3. Series Of Dreams (6.27) - "probably not circulating"
4. God Knows (3.12) - "demo with bass"
5. Can't Escape From You (5.22) - Dublin, December 2005 - one report says uillean pipes, the other says not
6. Dignity (5.25) - different lyrics & rockier...also described as a 'rockabilly' version
7. Ring Them Bells (4.59) - Supper Club 17 Nov 93
8. Cocaine Blues (5.30) - Wolftrap 24 Aug 97
9. Ain't Talkin' (6.13) - earlier version with different lyrics, not as 'ethereal' as released version
10. Girl On The Greenbriar Shore (2.51) - live France 30 June 92
11. Lonesome Day Blues (7.37) - live Florida 1 Feb 02
12. Miss The Mississippi (3.20) - Bromberg June 92 - "newly mixed"
13. The Lonesome River (3.04)
14. Cross The Green Mountain (8.15)

DISC THREE

1. Duncan & Brady (3.47) Bromberg 92 - with band & horns...another report says "no horns"
2. Cold Irons Bound (5.57) - Live Bonnaroo June 2004
3. Mississippi (6.24) - different lyrics..."earlier version"
4. Most Of the Time (5.10)
5. Ring Them Bells (3.18)
6.Things Have Changed (5.32) - live Portland 15 June 2000
7. Red River Shore (7.08) - with accordion..."more obvious approach than #1"
8. Born In Time (4.19) - "alternate Lanois mix"
9. Tryin' To Get To Heaven (5.10) - live Wembley 5 Oct 2000
10. Marchin' To The City (3.39) - "uptempo"
11. Can't Wait (7.24) - "psychadelic version"
12. Mary & The Soldier (4.23) - World Gone Wrong o/t - "riff not the same as Paul Brady version"

Promotion's going on! Another song to be available before release... quite unusual with Bob, isn't it?
So, tomorrow's the day...

At £100 for 3 discs and with thousands of outraged fans, I'd say it'll need all the promotion it gets...

Hehe, right you are! *g*
In the end, however, their plans or calculations will work out they can count on Bob's reliable fanbase. I hope this is no model for future releases though!

well, a boycott would be a good way of ensuring it isn't!

For those of you living in Europe, I've been told that Bob will be playing the Saar Music Festival in Germany around April 5, 2009. This will be part of a European tour around that time which will include UK dates.

@cc: I think you can enter anything into those fields (adress, name). You don't have to reply to any link they send you via E-Mail.

@Gazza: This is correct. In fact this is big news for me, because this festival takes place in my (quite small) hometown just around the corner from where I live. You can imagine how glad I was to read about this in the newspaper last saturday. There was no mention of a European tour but it was obvious from the start that Bob wouldn't come for Saarbrücken alone ;-)

I just noticed that Tell Take Signs is up on iTunes for pre-order. Points of interest:

1) It is up in one configuration only: The two disc version. The price is $17.99

2) If you pre-order there is a bonus track exclusive to iTunes: A live version of Lovesick

At this point, I almost feel like it is my patriotic duty to download the third disc from a torrent site or a newsgroup.

well, I think this "Mississippi" is just superb, not as "catchy" as the finished version, but such a natural performance. If this is how all or most of the Time Out of Mind--and/or Oh Mercy songs began, I can see why Dylan grew fed up with the Lanois treatment. Though it's his own fault if he did, having worked with Lanois before.

I was just looking at the multiple CD configurations again on Amazon and man, these are priced strangely.

1) As has been discussed to death, the three disc version with thirty nine tracks is the rip off of the century at $123

2) However, the two disc version with 27 tracks is an exceptional bargain at $16. $8 a disc is less than I am used to paying for used CD's at my local used record store. Of course, you have to factor in a few bucks for shipping but still, a bargain.

3) Interestingly, the single disc configuration is not such a bargain at $14 for 13 songs particularly when you consider that the record company has already given away two of the tracks on it for free! Compound that with the fact that Hucks's Tune and the live version of High Water have long been available as 99 cent downloads at iTunes so you are potentially paying 14 bills for 9 new tracks.

4) The MP3 version at Amazon is up in the two disc configuration only for $17.99. Not only does it lack a bonus track unlike iTunes, but it is more expensive than the comparable CD's!

smiling bouncing smileyOne more thing: You can preview all the tracks at Amazon right now! I have not seen this announced anywhere else. I wonder if it is a mistake?

It's a good issue. there's a remark that Dylan recorded another version of Oh Mercy with Ron Wood before working with Lanois. Is this out there or just another Dylan myth?

I'd never heard that story before, but Malcolm Burn (who plays on Oh Mercy) mentions it in this issue, so no reason to doubt him.

I get the impression from the way its worded that maybe Bob just demoed the songs with Ronnie. It certainly wasnt a full blown recording session.

For those of you who are too curious to wait until thursday (or next week depending on where you live) there will be an official stream of the whole album available starting tomorrow.

Source and further information: bobdylan.com News

However, I think I won't listen to this stream. Only 3 more days to go until the album is released so this won't lead me into temptation ;-)

That download single release, "Dreamin' Of You" has got quite a few lyrical similarities to the Time Out Of Mind song "Standing in the Doorway".

-"the light in this place / ..." is so bad ---> Standing in the Doorway
-"any minute now / I'm expecting ..." all hell to break loose ---> Things Have Changed
-(even) "the softest touch" / I see nothing to be gained by any explanation ... ---> Standing in the Doorway
-"church bells are ringing / I wonder who they're ringing for" (in the yard) ---> Standing in the Doorway
-"maybe they'll get me / maybe they won't" but not tonight and it won't be ... ---> Standing in the Doorway
-"I'll eat when I'm hungry / drink when I'm dry / live my life on the square" ---> Standing in the Doorway
-"feel further away than (I) ever (did) before" ---> Highlands

It's surprising to me that Bob Dylan allowed the label to release this sketch as a promo single.
I think, "Standing in the Doorway" is the better song of the two.
