Ot: Springsteen setlist

His new, latest shows (3) has enormous changes in the setlist. 20 songs in - 20 songs out, and so on. A new experience every night...you never know what you´re gonna get!!! What do you think about that?

It´s a good thing if you go to many shows. If you only go to one show, you wanna hear the hits.

Speak for yourself.

Never mind this "play what we know" nonsense. "Know what they play", more like.

He plays plenty of well known songs.

99 songs so far on this tour.

On the current North American leg, he's played 83 different songs over 24 shows. 32 of them werent played on the 2007 leg.

I think the last 15 shows have had 15 different openers.

Some sets work better than the others... Let´s say someone goes to only one Springsteen show in his/her lifetime. I guess the person would like to hear as many classic songs as possible. So it´s a bit risky to change the set around that much. I would be pissed off to know they had played my favorite song last night but would not play it this time. Of course the artist has the right to play what the hell he wants.

But it can be a good thing to change the set a lot, every gig is unique. Some bands play the same 20 songs in the same order every night which is a bit boring and too safe.

Thats the key, Matti. You cant simply second guess what the audience want and simply become a jukebox. What might be a crowd pleaser for some may be tedium for someone else. What might be your 'favourite song' or mine but might be a turkey for many others.

Most acts try and strike a balance. However, if its someone's one and only show in their lifetime, should their lack of interest in and commitment to the artist's work be prioritised over a sizeable section of the audience who see the artist every tour, and maybe more than once?

To get back to this post, there's been significant reasons for the changes in the last week. A lot of re-examining the band's history and paying tribute to Danny.

Yeah, Gazza!

I was totally blown away when I read the setlist from 23 to25 of april! I usually dont read "Backstreets". That´s what I call dedication, if I may say so! You still have the hunger to change - and follow your heart in every direction nessecary(how do I spell it?) for the occation, for the night...for the audience, for your soul...and it keeps the band on it´s toes...Rock´n´roll shouldnt be predictable...it should make us say ooooohhh!!!!, "I didn´t expect that"...and out comes a beautiful ballad that take you back to that special girlfriend, or...

I've collected a few of the Magic tour boots, and have some definite favorites, but this is not the place to discuss them.

"Junior Johnson runnin' through the woods of Caroline..."

Yep. I'd say theres a good chance of it. The song namechecks Wisconsin as well, and he played it when he was in Milwaukee.

Enjoy it.

I think it's great that he radically changes up the setlist. At this point in his or any other veteran performers career. There probably isn't going to be a lot of new fans suddenly getting into his music. Why not play to your fanbase. Besides, even if you are only a casual fan and only go to one show on the tour. You are virtually guaranteed of seeing a high energy, high quality show delivered with great passion and talent from the whole band and plenty of recognizable songs.....Besides,if you want a greatest hits tour.Go see Journey,Heart and Cheap Trick. Or some other god awful retro tour.moody smiley

You never know what you are going to hear at a Springsteen show. Not even the band. It's not unusual for him to change the setlist during the show. The only constant at a Springsteen show is that you are going to have a blast and hear some great musicians who know how to rock.

Not bad. I think I've heard 11 of those in the 5 shows I've seen on this tour.
Here's one possible setlist. Not necessarily a dream setlist. But a semi-realistic one:

5.Born To Run

I agree and i'm not the only one.
For this summer, the Springsteen show scheluded in Belgium moved from a stadium to an arena : too many tickets left.
It's good to change but not all the songs. Or Bruce could send the setlist previously, so we could choose the show we want.
For instance i regret to have missed the last show in Paris (nice set list for me) and now i'm afraid to get a "bad" set list in the parc des princes this summer.

I agree that Springsteen's setlists are truly amazing and I love the fact that he keeps changing the opening song on this current leg. The Boss kicks ass like he always does.

Bruce hasa strong enuff catalogue to mix it up and please everyone. Idont thin he underestimates his audiences, it not just the hadcore who know his stuff.

looking forward to next month. i got a GA ticket but may have to tray and swap it for a seat.

Great show Friday night in Atlanta - only a few nits to pick - he has dropped "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" since Danny's passing. It is my favorite on Magic.

Also, the opener of "Reason To Believe" was a poor choice IMHO. I'd have preferred a more rocking song - "The Ties That Bind", "Two Hearts" etc.

The encores of "Thunder", "BTRun", "Rosalita", and "10th Ave." were followed by "American Land" - a bit of a let down after that run of classics. Still, by all accounts a fabulous show.

Nice tribute to Phantom Dan at the beginning with a slide show of Dan as "Blood Brothers" played. The whole band was tight as usual. "Blinded By The Light" was a pleasant surpise as were "Bobby Jean" and "No Surrender". smiling smiley

Little bit of a muddled sound for the first 4-5 songs - unusual for Bruce (the perfectionist).

The beer was too expensive $13.50 for 2 Bud Lights! drinking smiley

At this point in his career, Springsteen doesn't draw many neophytes. Turning into a jukebox for a small number of casual fans would go against what Bruce has done his whole career. If you want the hit, there are plenty of boots, videos and live cds. The casual fan is also usually the guy who tells other fans to sit down. He (almost always a he) should enjoy the show for what it is, not what he wants it to be, because that's where the memories come.
