Just arrived back from an awesome show. The Boss is a true great and delivers every time. Great rapport with the audience and 26 songs.

The best thing is that I am off to see him on Friday at the Emirates in London, confident that he will mix up the setlist.

Can't wait...

May 30 / London, UK / Emirates Stadium
Notes: This first of two nights in London was the first concert to be held in Emirates Stadium, an enormous venue set down in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and the neighbors have been concerned about noise ever since these shows were announced. So with an established curfew, Springsteen and the E Streeters made sure to go on early -- "Did I see the sun? That can't be!" said Bruce. As it turned out, they blew right by the curfew time anyway, with the longest show yet of the tour, at 28 songs. Let others worry about the noise, Bruce had bigger concerns: "Nobody's played here before? We gotta test that structure tonight!"

Opening with "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out" got the crowd into it right away, and the post-"Magic" run from "Atlantic City" through "Because the Night" was particularly structure-rattling. During "Working on the Highway," which Bruce sang from out on the center stage thrust, he asked, "Who's got the signs?" After a sweep of the crowd from side to side, gathering those request banners as he went, he deposited an armful at center stage. Foregoing "She's the One," he decided to dig through the signs instead, throwing them over his shoulder as he went and settling on one for "Caddy Ranch." That one was a real highlight, featuring solos from Soozie and Steve.

The "big" numbers like "Mary's Place" and "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" kill the momentum a bit, but of course they're perfect for venues of this size. Bruce made sure to get everyone on the sides and in the way back involved. "You gotta do that big stadium thing!" he encouraged on "Sunny Day," getting them to wave their hands in the air like they really, really care and to sing along. "Oh, that's pretty good for here!" he needled. Back to the sign pile for another request: a magnificent "Point Blank" that recalled "Racing" in Dublin as a song that really shouldn't work in a ridiculously large venue... but really did. Standout bass work from Garry Tallent.

Hit after hit in the encore, starting with an inspiring, communal performance of "Thunder Road" as a dedication: "We want to thank our longtime, faithful English fans... We're gonna do this for you." After "Born to Run" and "Glory Days" (Bruce: "Is it tea time?... Is it sexy time?" Steve: "Not yet!"), it was time to really drive the crowd wild. "You can't take it no more!" Bruce hollered. "We wanna give it to you!" he repeated. "We're gonna give it to you!" They did -- "Rosie" was a blast. Structure test passed. But of course, that's just night one.

May 31 / London, UK / Emirates Stadium
Notes: Another great show for night two in London -- this one ended right at curfew, at 24 songs, but was nice and loose, with a full half of the set not played the night before. Bill Cunningham writes: "It's hard to decide which of the two was the better night -- with so many setlist changes, it felt almost as if the two-night run in London was just one wonderful six-hour show."

One notable change was moving "Radio Nowhere" to the fifth slot. They opened with a bang with "Out in the Street," and burned through "No Surrender," "Darkness," and "Gypsy Biker" -- none of which were played on Friday -- before getting to what had been the traditional concert opener last time they were in these parts. "Sandy" and "Growin' Up" were wrapped around some Danny stories, and then it was on to back-to-back Born in the U.S.A. rarities: "Downbound Train" and "I'm on Fire." These were the first tour premieres of this European leg.

Ian Henry tells us: "It may have been a few songs shorter, but it was simply sensational and awesome tonight. Bruce was seriously on fire, the set was so radically different from the first night, and the performance of 'Jungleland' was, in my 32-show experience, probably the finest. But the real joy was 'Sandy'; this week, my list of songs I was desperate to hear live was three: 'Point Blank,' 'Sandy,' and 'NYC Serenade.' As another big man once sang, to Roy on the piano I believe, two out of three ain't bad. And tonight proved one thing to me, Ian’s First Law of Bruce Concerts Theory: if he is playing two shows in your town and you can't do both, do the second! But I did both, and I -- like the band -- need my two-week rest. Roll on Cardiff!"

Reading all this stuff really makes me look forward to the Springsteen shows I have tickets for.
Does anyone have any info about the rumoured tour of the US this autumn? We're heading over in September, for 4 weeks.

US fall tour will start on august 30 in milwaukee (only date announced so far) and end on halloween in LA. 30 arena shows.
those dates will be announced any day now.

bruce will play some one-off US stadium shows in july and august.
so far, he's announced 3 in NJ and one in boston, but a couple of philly dates are likely.

While I applaud your effort Glen. I think their are a few errors. First you don't have Arcade Fire listed. Next,I'm pretty sure Badlands has been done at every show and I don't think Born In The USA has been done at all. I could be wrong. But still a nice list.

While I applaud your effort Glen. I think their are a few errors. First you don't have Arcade Fire listed. Next,I'm pretty sure Badlands has been done at every show and I don't think Born In The USA has been done at all. I could be wrong. But still a nice list.

Born in the USA was played in East Rutherford on September 28th last year.

Of course the artist has the right to play what the hell he wants.

Thats the key, Matti. You cant simply second guess what the audience want and simply become a jukebox. What might be a crowd pleaser for some may be tedium for someone else. What might be your 'favourite song' or mine but might be a turkey for many others.

Most acts try and strike a balance. However, if its someone's one and only show in their lifetime, should their lack of interest in and commitment to the artist's work be prioritised over a sizeable section of the audience who see the artist every tour, and maybe more than once?

Eloquently put, and you are of course 100 percent correct. In my opinion ... NO, the one show in a lifetime person's "needs" (for want of a better expression) should absolutely NOT be prioritised over the "sizeable" section of the audience who see the artist every tour, and maybe more than once.

And so to the Stones. This is perhaps where they err far too much on the side of caution. Although I'm in no way as critical as some about the element of "warhorse repetition" in their setlists, I do feel as if the setlists in general represent far too heavy of a nod to the "once in a lifetime" category of concert attendee, rather than the other. I am given to wonder though whether their perception of the crowd "mix" is actually correct. Perhaps in a stadium setting, yes ... the once in a lifetime brigade do outnumber the diehards, but in an arena setting, I wouldn't be so sure. Anyway, to cut a long story short, this is an area in which I feel (even the man does nothing for me personally) that Mr Springsteen (and his like) do in all fairness serve their faithful followers considerably better and in kinder fashion than the Stones.

You might wish to alert the good Logie to this 'ere post of mine, this is as much in the way of a conciliatory scribble on the subject of setlists/Stones/Springsteen etc as he's ever gonna get outa me, so he'd better read it and enjoy it while he can ... before big bad BV comes along and goes "o no, the tough northern bastard and the soft southern jessie are at it again - better kill this thread too"

I think glen is right.

Arcade Fire? he did two songs in Montreal with 2 of the band - State Trooper and keep the Car Running, which are listed above.

he also played Factory and Raise Your Hand with the ESB at the Count Basie benefit show last month, but that wasnt a tour show.

i didn't compile the list, i copied it from stoneponylondon.net

the list is correct. it includes the 2 songs bruce did with arcade fire (keep the car running and state trooper).

it includes the 3 "rehearsal" shows in NJ in september 2007 (they were open to the public with tix regurarly on sale) but not the benefit show in NJ in may 2008 (it's not considered part of of the magic tour proper).

badlands wasn't played at one of the september shows.

worthy of note: in may 2008 in manchester, bruce played only 9 songs that he also played in manchester in may 2003....

which is apparently the 18th different opener in the last 18 shows.

Bloody show off.

I don't get this, Gazza.
why do you think it's a show off? "I do this to show I can do it"

to me, it's more "I do this because I WANT to do it"

it's to keep the band and himself on the edge of their seats, on their toes. and to thrill and entertain his audience in a way that he thinks is best.

the boss's declared philosophy is: "we may be playing 80 shows in 8 months, but a certain kid in the audience will only see us once in his lifetime, we want to give THAT kid the best show of his life: we play every show as if it was the last show of our career"

and maybe the only way the boss knows to force the band to play the best possible show every night, is changing the set every night and changing the opener every night.
I think he knows his stuff: he's been playing with the ESB since 1972...

One of my fave Bands are doing 3 nights in their hometowm next week
a regular electric set
accoustic set
obscure album tracks/b sides/covers

I spoke to Gerry from the band last week and asked about rehearsals
" you realise why some songs were b-sides and obscure in the first place" he said

still a fun idea and maybe something more bands could do on occasion for the hardcore.

I'm kidding. It's a form of mock appreciation. I'm the last person in the world who'll ever complain about an artist shaking up setlists.

Eloquently put, and you are of course 100 percent correct. In my opinion ... NO, the one show in a lifetime person's "needs" (for want of a better expression) should absolutely NOT be prioritised over the "sizeable" section of the audience who see the artist every tour, and maybe more than once.

Fair enough post.

For what its worth, I think the days of Stones audiences being heavily populated by "once in a lifetime" attendees are LONG gone. Not with the regularity that theyve toured this decade and the age of their audience (the Isle of Wight festival and far flung places like Bucharest and Budva being notable exceptions because those gigs really were 'virgin territory')

No way are a sizeable amount of their audience seeing them for the first and only time. "Once in a tour" maybe but not "once in a lifetime". And if those audiences are seeing them once but never to return, that asks another question altogether.

PS - Have you changed your phone number? I texted you yesterday.

can you imagine that, on this tour, he NEVER played his 3 arguably biggest hits (hungry heart, streets of philadelphia, secret garden)?

and that born in the USA was only played in the rehearsal shows?

and that glory days was only done 6 times out of 74 shows?

and that some very well known songs from BITUSA like downbound train, i'm on fire, my hometown were done once or twice?

and that thunder road was only done 17 times?

etc...etc...

bruce is crazy
