their strangest 'vibed' album imo. it's almost as if the band was beginning to go off in new, exciting directions with stuff like 100 Years, Winter, CDA but then someone decided in 1974 with IORR to reign it back in again and go for back to basics raw rock n roll
Both Goats Head Soup and Black & Blue has a certain vibe to them. It's Only Rock 'n Roll lacks that somewhat. Even in that respect I'd say that GHS is the weakest of the seventies lot. It has some very good things on it, but it's not nearly as good as either of the other two IMO.

It's pretty hard to choose actually. I just think that the seventies is the most interesting decade. There are things from the seventies that they couldn't have done in the 60s (And vice versa). Much like today: There's things that they couldn't have made in the 70s.
Enqueued all 28 WAVs from Dancing With Mr D to Crazy Mama and while I'm sure I'll enjoy every second of the coming 2 hours and 16 minutes, I'll come back to you afterwards with the final word ;-)
as many others said before: GHS has a certain mood. it's mystic, dreamy and hasn't got that drive and roughness of exile. it's very laidback and easy somehow. the productions is boring. but as i said they still could catch a certain, special mood! IORR has cool songs but it's somehow loose and a bit uninspired!
I agree with guitarbastard. I think GHS is, song-wise, a pretty weak album but it's got a vibe which permeates and unifies the tracks - it's a true album.
IORR, on the other hand, has slightly better songs but absolutely no cohesiveness whatsoever.
I listened to B&B last night for the first time in a couple of months. Still my least favorite of the three!
IMO, GHS and IORR are the weakest albums from the 70s, even though there are some marvellous songs on both albums, including one of my faves, If You CanĀ“t Rock Me.
I Think Goats Is Much better than IORR & Black n Blue. I think IORR would be least fav Studio Of 70's. The "sound" production is lacking for Goats though I think. MEZ
Goats Head Soup The Weakest 70's Album?????????????????????
Compare to the 4 albums they released before GHS, yeah I was a bit disappointed for me....but on the other hand what they released in the next 30 years I'm glad they released it

I LOVE that song, rooster! "Can ya hear the GIT-arrr?" It's very pretty, actually, and slightly philosophical, a nice companion to "100 Years Ago."
Other than some guitar work (Taylor's) there is not much of interest on this poor sounding record. The beginning of the end and it's been a long slow death.
I've always loved Goat's Head Soup. I remember getting it for Christmas one year and the vibe and atmosphere fit that Winter so perfectly. The song "Winter" was brilliant. Can't remember how old I was but I know I was in high school.
It's not as good as the big 4, but its' at least in my top 5 or 6.
this is one of those albums that seems to be more appreciated as time goes by. In 73 as a 16 yr old I didnt like as well as Exile or R n R but now I really love listening to it especially after remastering (done officially or boot) that pulled it out of the dirt! It was just so terribly mastered in 73. One of my favorite Keith songs(Coming Down Again) which in so many reviews I've seen vocals attributed to Mick and cannot understand how someone could think that!!
I'M rather fond of this album , though not perhaps as strong as some , it was the album they were promoting when I saw them at Wembley in 73 , never forget the buzz of hearing Star f@ker live for the very first time, going home and taping onto a cassette to play at work on the Monday morning. Still love that song all these years later. I'm playing the album now and enjoying it very much though I still have the original mix version . Which remaster of it do you guys recommend I should get to accompany it ( note not replace )
