The top 50 live albums
Posted by: Svartmer ()

The web site Classic Rock Revisited has compiled both their own and their readers lists of the best 50 live albums. Can´t say I agree with all of them, but I own maybe 80% of the listed records. The Stones? As always, kind of neglected...

Wasn't Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous completely recorded in the studio except for the drums?

About that album:

Tony Visconti:
"We spent a few days re-recording a few vocals. It went very well. Once we established a sound and a system to do this, Phil suggested that we might as well redo all the vocals. So we did. Then we noticed that Gorham and Robertson were not on mic for backing vocals half the time. If you listen closely you can hear Phil doubling the backing vocals at the same time he was singing lead! Then Phil realized that he'd missed a few notes on the bass when he was singing live. Could we replace some bass parts? "Of course!" I said. We did. The bass was harder and more precise and so ALL the bass parts were replaced. In walked Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Since it was so easy to replace Phil's parts, could they redo theirs? "Of course!" But now it was obvious that this was not completely live anymore. The guitars, bass and vocals were replaced -- just Downey's drums and the audience reaction were left! Fortunately Downey liked his playing and we kept ALL the drums".

Like most live albums some degree off post production trickery was involved, as to how much ? I suspect Tony Visconti has exaggerated how much in this instance. Pogues manager Frank Murray was the Lizzy tour manager at the time and his memories are a bit different, I suspect it falls somewhere between the two. I take all these rock and roll recollections with a pinch of sale, so frequent are the contradictions from different tellers. When its Bob Geldoff I tend to write it off as a no nonsense LIE, the guy cant help it " ya i was there when Dylan did that video "Subterranean homesick blues"

No list can be serious if it does not include a James Brown!

In fairness you'd expect no better from a 'classic rock' site. It's going to tend to be a somewhat limited (and almost exclusively 'white') format.

Admittedly whilst not a 'rock' album 'Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison' should be there on atmosphere/chemistry alone.

Did I miss it or is Rock And Roll Animal NOT on that list? It would be somewhere around #3 on mine.

You seem to forget that Kiss Alive and Frampton Comes Alive were watershed albums when they were released. They spawned a plethora of live album in the 70s and made artists/record companies re-evalute the live album format.

"Watershed" as in "selling in large numbers" - yes.

Doesnt necessarily mean they're particularly good, though.

Me too . It is underlined also by the fact that the ranking is the same for both critics and voters.

The Allman Brothers deserve the #1 spot-nothing beats Fillmore.
Glad to see two J.Geils Band albums in there, a lot of the rest are crap.
Kiss and Rush,ouch.
