is it easy to find the houses in dartford where keith and mick grew up?
are there any special signs to find the way or are the citizans rather enoyed with fan-tourism? (what i can easily imagine and understand)
anyone been there?

Re: Dartford

Here's the station, gateway to Sarf East Larnden....and the meeting place of the Twins we refer to as 'The Glimmer'

It has been modernised since that fateful day in the early 60's and made to look more hideous as you can see....

...not sure if the sky really is that blue there...

Check out RedlandRoge's website for pics of Keith's childhood homes.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

OK, here is an entire set of new images taken in August by Dandelion (Corrina) from the German fan club Stonestreff (www.stonestreff.de). This is her work, not mine.

She is also on this board -- mostly reads with an occasional post. Her IORR board name is Dandelion1812, the same as her Stonestreff name.

I also include her commentary (an attempt to translate it into English).

Dartford station 25.08.2007

Dartford has only 2 platforms - I think it is not known on exactly which platform Mick and Keith met again ...

The entrance to the station

Dartford Grammar School - This is in a westerly direction at the end of the West Hill Road / transition to Dartford Road at the junction of Shepherds Lane -- next 4 fotos

Directly below the Grammar School in Shepherds Lane is the Mick Jagger Centre -- next 2 fotos

Chastillian Road -- next 3 fotos

Unbelievable, but the two children lived only about 200-250 m away from each other; Mick in the Denver Road

And Keith in Chastilian Road - The reverse side of the house in which Keith lived

Unfortunately, it was not possible to get close to the Technical School ...

The way to Spielman Road was a bit of an up and down hike; The view from the hill down to the Temple Hill in the settlement

The posts and the door of the garden are still original

Keith lived here from 1955-1962

The house is inhabited ... the current owner or tenant had discovered that I was interested in her house ... she made curious glances out the window towards me .. I suppose they already know whose house it was in which they live ... inside, there is a wooden staircase -- next 2 fotos

... All in all it was for me was very moving to be in Dartford ... in their tracks as it were ...

... But it is in any case worth a detour.

... Small tranquil town ... nice with the brick facades ... small world ...

... Unfortunately, I had no time for Livingstone Hospital ... I explored everything on foot ... the day was quite hot ...

The walk lasted all in all approximately 3.5 hours ...

My girlfriend lives in Dartford, so I'm there most of the time.

What can I say about the area? Its OK, but pretty much like any other town in the South East of England.

Where Keith lived (Temple Hill) is an absolute dive. I really wouldn't want to trek up there.

Getting on to the station, there were stories in the local paper about a plaque being put up to commemorate the famous meeting of Mick and Keith, but nothing has been done as of yet.

Opposite the station is a pub called The Railway Hotel, where yours truly can be found supping a Guinness from time to time.

Thanks Timbernardis and Dandelion for the great set of pictures.

What isn't obvious from the pictures is that in the 1950s there would have been a real social/class gap between the boy who lived in a flat above a shop and then in a council house, and went to the Technical College, and the boy who lived in the neat semi-detached house just round the corner and went to Dartford Grammar School. Once Mick and Keith had moved away from their childhood homes and their first school, that divide meant their paths would seldom have crossed. Thank goodness for a missed train on Dartford Station.

If you want to see what life on Dartford's Temple Hill estate catch the movie "Wasp". Filmed on the estate and many residents as extras.

"Wasp" is to Dartford what "Rita, Sue & Bob Too" is to Bradford

shall i assume keith went to the technical college (part of art school or separate?)?

and technical college vs. dartford grammar school - how can they be compared? wouldn't it be tech college vs. LSE?

I assume Keith did go to tech college and it was Mick who went to Dartford Grammar School, but I will ask Dande to confirm this.

What is LSE?

but didn't they go to the same grammar school? i just wondered how the grammar school and technical school could be compared (in green lady's post) in terms of social status since mick and keith were the same age - didn't they go to the same grammer school and therefore were equal in terms of social status at least when they were kids?

They were both at the Grammar school...

I don´t know the english school system but I think they both stay there until their 11 Birthday... of course then they must change the schools...

Then Keith went to Technical ... but only for 1 year or 2...Then he was kicked of course he wears the wrong trousers grinning smiley

Mick went to LSE in London...

Later Keith go to Sidcup School...but that is not in Dartford.

Keith was a teddy boy, right?

Anyone recalls if they both were on their way to LSE & Sidcup
respectively that fateful foggy mornin' (?) when they met at D. station?

Grammar schools are for those who pass their 11-plus exams.

Technical schools were for those who just about scraped through the exam. They were like Grammar schools, but with more of a focus on practical subjects such as metal work and woodwork. Technical schools are no longer with us.

If you fail your 11-plus, you go to a High school.

................................

Different secondary schools, but Mick and Keith attended the same primary school. Mick would’ve been in the year above I'd of thought

did they attend the same class, or only the same school?

Thanks, Timbernardis, for the pics.
Years ago, I went to Dartford and made about the same tour: the railroad station, the grammar school, Mick's house, Keith's house and a short dead end street named Jagger.
There was not yet the Mick Jagger Centre when I visited Dartford.
